Little Pisces Cafe Vancouver Review: Red Bean Taiyaki

🐟 Spot Review: Little Pisces Cafe (1778 Columbia St, Vancouver)

What We Tried: Red Bean Taiyaki ($7.20 for two pieces)
The Highs: Wonderfully balanced red bean filling that isn't overly sweet, paired with a chewiness reminiscent of mochi.
The Verdict: A cute neighbourhood spot worth visiting for a quick dessert run—though we'll definitely be back during the daytime to try their breakfast!

If you know me, you know that hubby and I overall adore taiyaki, so when we heard about Little Pisces Cafe (1778 Columbia St, Vancouver), we simply had to drop by! They specialize in these charming fish-shaped treats, so our expectations were definitely set high.

For anyone unfamiliar, taiyaki is a traditional Japanese fish-shaped cake typically molded from waffle or pancake batter and stuffed with sweet fillings like red bean paste, custard, or chocolate. It’s warm, comforting, and an absolute street food classic!

We dropped in on a Thursday evening, and it was bustling, they actually had a live band playing inside! While it was a fun touch, it made the cafe super loud while we were waiting for our order. We ordered two pieces of Red Bean Taiyaki ($7.20 total) to satisfy our dessert craving.

When we took our first bites, the texture was the first thing that stood out. The pancake outer shell itself carries almost no sweetness, and in certain areas, the dough had a delightful, slightly chewy consistency that felt almost mochi-like!

I absolutely love red bean, and I was happy to find that their filling wasn't cloyingly sweet at all. Hubby, on the other hand... wasn't a huge fan of the red bean flavor, haha! Differing tastebuds strike again.

Even though our quick evening dessert trip was a bit noisy, we noticed they serve a full morning menu. We'll definitely be back in the morning sometime to try their Filipino breakfast offerings, and you know I definitely need to test out their matcha latte as well!
