Verdict: The scallop pie is excellent, and the beef pie is the best meat pie I have had in Australia.

We booked a tour to drive the Great Ocean Road, with the end goal of seeing the 12 Apostles. For our lunch stop, we pulled into Apollo Bay, and our guide suggested we try Apollo Bay Bakery, which is famous for its scallop pie. We liked it so much that we went back for more.

Mornay Scallop Pie ($15)

Of course, we got the mornay scallop pie ($15), and it is absolutely excellent. Plump, tender scallops are covered in a creamy white sauce inside a flaky, golden pie crust. It is rich and comforting, and I can see why locals and tour guides recommend it.

Beef Pie ($8)

I also could not resist grabbing a classic beef pie ($8), because I had not yet had one that made me say, "Wow, that's the best." That search ended today. I have tried a list of meat pies in Australia (see the list at the bottom of this post), and I can safely say this is the best meat pie I have had. The seasoning on the rich, savoury gravy is on point, and the pie is warm and amazing.

Pasties ($8 each)

We loved this bakery so much that we had to come back and grab pasties. A pastie is a hand-held baked pastry parcel stuffed with a savoury filling. It is a bit like a roll or an empanada, but the pastry is flakier than an empanada.

I got the wholemeal cheese & veggie pastie ($8), while hubby went for the meat & vegetable pastie ($8). They were both very good, but I think the meat & vegetable one is excellent.

Final Thoughts

Apollo Bay Bakery was the perfect lunch stop on our Great Ocean Road tour, and it was a highlight of the day. Come for the famous scallop pie, and stay for the beef pie that ended my search. Prices are in AUD.

What is the best meat pie you have ever had? Tell me in the comments, because I am still on the hunt for the next one!
