It was Thursday, and we were hunting for a late dinner. After 9:30 PM, we walked along Elizabeth Street to see what was still open, and that is how we spotted Laoliuzhou. We were hungry and the lights were on, so we decided to give them a try.
A Quick Heads-Up Before You Go
First, don't expect friendly service. Don't come here with zero patience, or when you're hangry, either. They are slow, so settle in and plan to wait for your food. If you can go in with relaxed expectations, the dumplings make it worthwhile.
Pork & Chive Steamed Dumplings ($15.90)
We ordered 10 pieces of their juicy pork and chive steamed dumplings for $15.90, and this was the winner of the night. The savoury, tender pork is balanced by fragrant, fresh chives in a soft, chewy wrapper. It is a classic combination for a reason.

Chicken & Shrimp Dumplings ($15.90)
Next, we tried 10 pieces of the chicken and shrimp dumplings, also $15.90. Judging by the texture of the skin, which was smoother and softer, these seemed boiled rather than steamed. I thought the combination of tender chicken and sweet shrimp would be the best of the two, but I was wrong. They were good, just not as exciting as the pork.

Final Thoughts
If you are craving dumplings late at night in the Melbourne CBD, Laoliuzhou is a decent option on Elizabeth Street. Order the pork and chive, bring your patience, and you will leave full. Prices are in AUD.
