Meetbowl Melbourne CBD: Indonesian Smashed Chicken on Rice at Church Lane (Review)

Meetbowl

Location: 30 Church Ln, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia

Featured Items: Smashed Chicken on Rice ($17.50 AUD)

Note: Recently opened, casual and reasonably priced, with a bit of a queue at busy times. Prices are in AUD.

Verdict: Crispy fried chicken covered in a spicy sambal that is well worth the wait. Highly recommended.

Our Melbourne food adventure has been a tour of Southeast Asia so far. We have had Malaysian at Roti Bar and Vietnamese at Luke's Banh Mi, so next on the list was Indonesian. That brought us to the recently opened Meetbowl in the CBD, tucked along Church Lane.

The Vibe and the Queue

There was a bit of a queue when we arrived, which tells me this is a popular, reasonably priced casual spot. In my experience, a line for a brand-new restaurant is usually a good sign, and the line moved along nicely.

I ordered the Smashed Chicken on Rice, and it was so good. The crispy, golden fried chicken is covered in a spicy, deeply flavourful sambal that clings to every craggy bit of the crust. It comes with a scoop of fluffy white rice topped with crunchy fried shallots, halved eggs, cool cucumber slices and a little dish of sweet chili sauce on the side. The cooling cucumber and plain rice balance the heat of the sambal perfectly.

Final Thoughts

Meetbowl was exactly the kind of casual, satisfying meal I was craving, and that sambal is the star. If you are in the CBD and want something bold, filling and budget-friendly, add it to your list. Prices are in AUD.

Honestly, we really need more Indonesian spots in Vancouver. Do you know of a great Indonesian restaurant in Metro Vancouver, or a favourite sambal dish? Tell me in the comments, because I would love to try it when we get home!
