Life has a funny way of pushing you toward new discoveries. After our
induction cooktop broke earlier this week, Thursday night became a mission. We
walked over four kilometres to the London Drugs on Davie Street to pick up a
reasonably priced unit: I refused to wait two weeks for a delivery!
By the time we had our new cooktop in hand, it was nearly 9:00 PM. We were
starving and exhausted. While we considered Tom's Sushi or the new Jeon Korean
Restaurant, the 24/7 siren call of
Breka Bakery & Cafe won us over. There is something so
comforting about a place that is always "on," filled with students on laptops
and friends catching up over sugary donuts.
Real Fruit Refuel

A vibrant nutrient hug. The Tropical Green Smoothie was exactly
the bright, refreshing boost I needed after a long day of walking.

Hubby’s choice: the classic Creamy Strawberry Banana. Sweet,
simple, and comforting, like a trusted friend in a buzz-filled café.

The "Cretzel" Curiosity
My husband went for something truly unique: the
Cretzel Ham & Cheese Melt ($7.25). If a buttery croissant
and a salty pretzel had a baby, this would be it. Shaped like a pretzel but
with the flaky soul of a croissant, it was filled with lightly grilled savoury
ham and sharp cheddar cheese.

Look at that flaky butter crust. This was delightfully confusing: a
perfect, sweet and savoury balance with honey Dijon mayo that made it a
knockout, smooch-worthy bite.

Vibrant Greens & Cold Spots
Being conscious of my very indulgent "Three-Post Thursday," I chose the
Curried Chickpeas & Kale Wrap ($7.50). This
vegan-friendly whole wheat spinach tortilla is packed with protein-rich
chickpeas, leafy kale, and a creamy vegan curry mayo sauce infused with
buttery cashews.

Packed with earthy greens. I requested it warmed, and while the
microwave left a few character-building cold spots, the aromatic
flavours were still nostalgic and bright.

Walking home with our new cooktop and full bellies, I have a renewed deep
appreciation for 24/7 spots which is rare to find in Vancouver. Breka did not
just feed us, it is a unique comfort when our appliances break and our
workdays run long and you just need to catch your breath when everything else
is about to close. That is truly smooch-worthy.
Past Loves: A History of Sweets
My relationship with Breka goes back years. While tonight was about savoury
sustenance, I cannot ignore the sugary masterpieces I have fallen for in the
