Tuesday evening took us to Burnaby for an evening stroll from Edmonds toward Metrotown. We have been watching the Korean drama Agency lately, so our cravings were leaning heavily toward Korean food before we even started our walk.

Finding HanWoori

As we made our way along Kingsway, we spotted HanWoori and decided to step into the unassuming restaurant. We were immediately greeted by some of the friendliest staff, and when they asked if we were there for the barbecue experience, we were happy to say yes. There is something so personal and grounding about the ritual of grilling at your own table.

A Sweet Surprise

We ordered Combo A for 2 ($79.95), which comes with marinated prime beef ribs, beef, chicken, and spicy pork bulgogi. It was served with the usual ban chan (side dishes) and a choice of soup; we went for the Doenjang Jjigae.

A table full of love. Our BBQ adventure began with a colourful spread of ban chan surrounding the grill, though we were surprised to find the kimchi leaned much sweeter than the spicy kick we usually crave.

The stars of the show: marinated prime beef ribs, chicken, and spicy pork bulgogi from Combo A. There is something so satisfying about the ritual of tabletop grilling; it is the ultimate way to document a Tuesday night feast.

Curiously, we noticed that almost everything had a distinct sweetness to it. Even the kimchi was quite mild, and the tofu soup broth had a sweet profile that we found unusual. The only sharp, tangy bite of the night came from the pickled radish.

Our Doenjang Jjigae arrived steaming hot. While the tofu was perfectly soft, the broth carried a unique, sweet profile that matched the rest of the meal—an unusual but interesting discovery for our Burnaby stroll.

One of the highlights was the Seafood Pancake ($29.95). Unlike the typical pizza-style triangles you see at most spots, HanWoori serves theirs in square cuts. It was crispy, delicious, and exactly what we needed for our mid-walk refuel.

A square-cut surprise! Unlike the usual pizza-style triangles, HanWoori serves their crispy seafood pancake in perfect squares. It was the ideal, smooch-worthy refuel to power the rest of our walk toward Metrotown.
