The house was quiet, the week ahead is simmering on the horizon, and here I am just waiting for my favourite person to walk through the door.
My husband returned from his retreat in Mission, BC. He didn’t come home empty-handed, either! He surprised me with a little box from Oohlala Donuts in Kitsilano, and inside was a treat.
The Collaboration: A Taste of Vancouver Royalty
If you are a fan of the Vancouver food scene, you likely know the name Vikram Vij. As the visionary behind the legendary Vij’s Restaurant, he is known for elevating Indian flavours into something truly magical.
This particular donut was developed in partnership with Chef Vij, and you can tell there was an incredible amount of intention behind every ingredient. It is not just a pastry; it is a thoughtfully composed dessert.
The Details: More Than Just a Sugar Rush

| A closer look at the intricate details: real Indian vark (silver leaf), dried rose petals, and candied papaya. |
At first glance, this donut is a total work of art. It is topped with a rich chai blend frosting, delicate dried rose petals, candied papaya, and real Indian vark (that beautiful edible silver leaf).
It is, quite frankly, stunning. But the real win is the flavour profile. While, sometimes specialty donuts can be a bit of a sugar overload, but the warm hint of chai perfectly balances the sweetness of the donut. It feels sophisticated and cozy all at the same time.
Why You Should Grab One
If you find yourself in Kitsilano, Oohlala Donuts is already a must-visit for the beautiful aesthetic, but this collaboration is something special. Whether you are treating yourself after a long week or looking for a "just because" surprise for someone you love, this chai donut is a beautiful reminder of how local flavours can come together to create something delicious.
It was the perfect "welcome home" treat, shared over a quick catch-up and a fresh cup of tea.
Have you tried any of the Vij-inspired treats around town? Let me know in the comments. I am always looking for my next favourite bite!
