Mr. Sushi Review: The Best Value Bento & Specialty Rolls in Mount Pleasant

I'm tired. It's Sunday afternoon and we’ve walked all the way from Slocan to Commercial Drive and now to Main Street. It’s that lovely, sun-dazed exhaustion where the conversation eventually turns to the inevitable question: What’s for dinner?

As much as I love my kitchen, by the time we were closing in on home, the thought of cooking was a hard "no." We found ourselves standing outside Mr. Sushi on East 2nd Ave. It’s the closest spot to us, yet somehow, we had never stepped inside.

Well, I’m so glad we finally did. If you're looking for friendly service, reasonable prices, and that "neighborhood staple" feel, this is it. It’s exactly the kind of place that makes a community feel like home.

The "Hungry" Order

You know how they say you shouldn’t go grocery shopping when you’re hungry? The same rule applies to ordering sushi. We definitely over-ordered, but have no regrets.

The Bento Deal

Hubby opted for the Pork Katsu Bento Box ($19.95). Can we talk about the value here? It was a massive spread: miso soup, green salad, a pile of rice topped with katsu, prawn and yam tempura, a full 8-piece California roll, and a gyoza. It’s the kind of meal that makes you feel a happy food coma afterwards.

My Staples & Specialty Rolls

I decided to test the waters with my usual sushi spot staples and two very different special rolls from their list:

  • Chicken Karaage: This was the winner for me. It was crispy and juicy, though a bit on the salty side, but that actually makes it work so well when you have a bowl of rice to pair it with.

Chicken Karaage: Crispy, juicy, and the perfect rice companion.

  • Takoyaki: These were pretty standard. They hit the spot for the craving, but I’ll probably save that space for more karaage next time!

Standard Takoyaki – a solid snack to start the meal.

  • The Taylor Roll ($9.00): This is the most amusing thing! It’s right at the top of the special rolls list. It’s a battered, deep-fried California roll with cream cheese. It’s so heavy and just... amusing. I couldn't help but smile eating it.

The Taylor Roll: Amusing, indulgent, and very deep-fried!

  • The Karl Roll ($19.25): Found at the bottom of the list, this one is the real showstopper. It's a spicy roll with crab meat, avocado, and cucumber, but the stars are the torched salmon, tuna, ebi, and scallops on top. The wasabi mayo and spicy mayo tie the whole thing together perfectly.

The Morning After

We ordered so much that we even had leftovers! We packed up a few slices of katsu, some California rolls, and a bit of the karaage and takoyaki. It is so satisfying that Sunday’s "too much" becomes a delicious Monday morning breakfast.

We will definitely be back. It’s rare to find a place that ticks the boxes for convenience, price, and genuine kindness all at once. If you’re in Mount Pleasant and need a reliable spot, give them a visit.
