| ⭐ Smooch Verdict: | The perfect refreshing finale to a sunny Sunday. While the massive selection can easily induce decision paralysis, the traditional flavours and excellent ube profile make it a reliable neighborhood staple to beat the summer heat. |
After wrapping up our incredibly satisfying Filipino lunch feast over at Joyce-Collingwood, we hopped onto the SkyTrain to head back toward Olympic Village. On a clear, brilliantly sunny day like today, the transit ride itself felt like a mini treat, treating us to gorgeous, unobstructed views of the mountains. But by the time we stepped off the train, the beautiful afternoon heat had us both craving something ice-cold to cool down before heading home. Naturally, we decided to make a quick stop at a local neighborhood classic: Mario's Gelati.
If you have ever stepped inside Mario's, you already know that decision paralysis is an absolute guarantee. Their display cases feature a staggering lineup of over 60+ vibrant flavours, ranging from classic Italian nutty profiles to tropical fruit sorbettos. Standing in front of that massive wall of options can be overwhelming, but the Filipino in me immediately locked onto a specific tub in the case: the Ube Coconut Marble ($5.50 for a single scoop on a waffle cone). I simply had to see how their version stacked up against the authentic, nostalgic flavours from back home.

| A nostalgic taste of home: The vibrant, creamy Ube Coconut Marble waffle cone. |
Overall, I think it is an excellent attempt! The coconut flavor profile is definitely on the subtler side and doesn't quite punch through the cream, but the ube profile itself is remarkably spot-on. It has that distinct, comforting, earthy sweetness that tastes very close to the ube ice cream you get in the Philippines, which made my heart incredibly happy. Wrapped in a crisp, sweet waffle cone, it was exactly what I needed to beat the afternoon heat.
Hubby decided to go the ultra-traditional Italian route and ordered a single scoop of Spumone. For the uninitiated, this classic combo brings together a beautiful, structured trio of rich chocolate, earthy pistachio, and smooth vanilla gelato, all studded with a delicate mix of chewy candied fruits and crunchy chopped nuts.

| Classic Italian layers: The rich, nutty, and chocolate-forward Spumone cone. |
When I snuck a quick lick of his cone to test it out, my initial thought was that the flavour profile felt heavily chocolate-forward. However, given how beautifully marbled a proper spumone scoop can be, it is entirely possible that the specific section I licked just happened to be mostly chocolate! Either way, it was rich, velvety, and incredibly satisfying.
At $5.50 a scoop, it is a delightful little luxury that completely elevated our weekend afternoon walk.
