| Location: | Cantonese BBQ (Richmond, BC) |
| Must-Order: | 4-Item BBQ Combination Set ($56.80) |
| The Comforts: | Beef and Broccoli ($28.80) & Crispy House Special Noodles |
| The Sides: | Stir-Fried Pea Sprouts ($29.80) & Yang Chow Fried Rice |
Just last month, our family gathered together to celebrate my mom's birthday at Cantonese BBQ in Richmond. The meal was so spectacular that when it came time to decide on a spot for my dad's birthday this week, he explicitly requested that we go right back to the very same place! We all agreed without a single second of hesitation because the food there is truly excellent.
Honestly, I am completely appalled by the low rating this place has on Google Maps. It just goes to show that you cannot always trust online reviews! Locals know exactly how good it is, which is why you will regularly find people lining up out the door to grab their meats to go. Since we knew exactly what we loved from last time, we ended up ordering almost the exact same spread.
The Showstopper: The Four-Item BBQ Set ($56.80)
You simply cannot visit this restaurant without ordering their iconic BBQ Set ($56.80). It features a generous combination of four classic meats: sweet BBQ Pork (Char siu), ultra-crispy Roasted Pork Belly, rich Peking Duck, and savoury Soy Sauce Chicken.

Everything on this platter was incredibly tender, beautifully fatty, and the traditional flavours were absolutely on point. My brother is a massive fan of Hong Kong style barbecue, and he made an interesting observation during dinner. He noted that the Cantonese style at this restaurant seems noticeably oilier, meaning the platter itself just comes across as richer than what you typically get in HK style joints. Whether that is a technical style difference or just their unique house preparation, it makes for an incredibly indulgent bite!
Dad's Special Request: Beef and Broccoli ($28.80)
Because it was his special day, the birthday boy got to call the shots on the classic stir-fry dishes. Dad requested the Beef and Broccoli ($28.80), and the kitchen executed it flawlessly.

The beef slices were velvety soft and beautifully marinated, while the broccoli was cooked to absolute perfection. There is nothing worse than soggy, mushy vegetables in a stir-fry, but this broccoli retained that wonderful, vibrant green colour and a satisfying, crisp snap.
Carb Heaven: Crispy Noodles & Yang Chow Fried Rice
For our main starch dishes, we doubled down on comfort. First up were the Crispy House Special Noodles, which arrived piled incredibly high with an assortment of fresh seafood and vibrant vegetables.

The texture here is everything. The golden, bird-nest style noodles stayed beautifully crunchy around the edges, while the center absorbed all that luscious, savoury sauce. Alongside the noodles, we ordered the Yang Chow Fried Rice purely for maximum deliciousness. It was beautifully stir-fried with distinct grains of rice, loaded with savoury bits of meat, and served as the perfect base for the rest of our dishes.

Balancing the Feast: Stir-Fried Pea Sprouts ($29.80)
Of course, with all those rich, luxurious meats and fried carbs on the table, we had to introduce something green to satisfy our ongoing health goals! We ordered a plate of the Stir-Fried Pea Sprouts ($29.80).

They were lightly tossed with just a hint of garlic, remaining bright, and incredibly clean tasting. It was the perfect refreshing palate cleanser between bites of the rich roasted pork belly and duck.
Getting the whole family together to celebrate another year of life over a table overflowing with comfort food is truly my favourite way to spend an evening. Happy Birthday, Papa!
