F7. Chef James Xian Jiang Man

One of the most popular food vendors inside the Richmond Night Market and food good reason is Chef James Xian Jiang Man. I highly recommend the Xinjian-style lamb bun. I still dream about it.

Xinjiang Style Lamb Bun

Food cost and food options for Chef James Xian Jiang Man are below:

Mix and Match the three buns:
  • 1 for $8.00
  • 3 for $20.00
  • 4 for $25.00

Deep-fried mantou, vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, and icing sugar

Ube Bao Bun from Bao Buns
Deep-fried mantou (milk bun), ube ice cream, purple cream sticks, condensed milk, and icing sugar

They serve deep-fried mantou, a popular Chinese snack that involves deep-frying mantou, a type of plain, steamed or baked bread. The deep-frying process gives the mantou a crispy texture on the outside while the inside remains soft and fluffy. As a sweet dish, it's served with condensed milk.

  • Milo Bao Bun - $15.00
  • Cookies & Cream Bao Bun - $15.00
  • Strawberry Nutella Bao Bun - $15.00

This post is a work in progress. I will remove this line once it's complete.

Seafood Adventure at Richmond Night Market 2024

Yay! It's the first day of the Richmond Night Market, and we were lined up an hour before opening because I needed to take pictures of all the booth and their menu (link to the post here).

This year, we embarked on a seafood-only adventure and were impressed!

F03. Crayfish Dumplings

The first stop was crayfish dumplings. Having never tried crayfish before, I wasn't sure what to expect. Unlike shrimp, crayfish boasts a firmer texture and a unique flavour. The dipping sauce was a game-changer, adding a burst of savoury goodness. If you're a lobster fan, you might find these crayfish dumplings equally delightful.

F12. Korean Pancakes

Next up were Korean seafood pancakes. We're big fans of these seafood pancakes and always order them at Korean restaurants. While these were delicious, featuring fresh shrimp, squid, and scallions that added pops of flavour, we did miss a bit of textural contrast. A hint of crispness from a slightly browned edge would have elevated them to new heights.

F66. 100% Fresh Juice

After two savoury dishes, we needed a drink and spotted a freshly squeezed juice booth with choices of cucumber, orange, or carrots. I went for classic OJ and was not disappointed. It was easily the healthiest drink offered in the Richmond Night Market!

F58. Lao Er BBQ Squid

While enjoying our refreshing OJ, we hopped in line for some grilled squid. A few vendors were offering this tempting treat, but we decided to try booth F58 - Lao Er BBQ Suide. I'm glad we went there. It was fantastic! The squid was cooked to absolute perfection, and the unique blend of spices was genuinely exceptional.

F41. Dango House

Now, it's time for something sweet. We couldn't resist indulging in some dango. We grabbed one topped with matcha and another with red beans. Both were delicious, but the red bean stole the show. The chewy rice balls were bursting with sweetness, and the red bean paste added a delightful textural contrast. Yum!

F24. Sushi Hotdog

For our penultimate dish, we tried a new vendor: sushi hot dog. I was scared that there was land animal meat in this dish, but as hubby correctly guessed - there was no hotdog. It's essentially sushi formed into a hotdog shape. The exterior is made of fried rice wrapped in seaweed, and the filling is pure seafood delight. I opted for the salmon, which came topped with fresh salmon slices, creamy avocado, and refreshing cucumber. This one ended up being my husband's favourite dish (though the grilled squid remains my champion!).

F17. Fishball

Before calling it a night, I wanted to support one of the Filipino booths we spotted. Kimshaker's Food Hub Filipino Cuisine had fish balls calling my name. If I could eat meat, I would have grabbed some siomai and kikiam, too, but for now, the fish balls hit the spot. The flavour was reminiscent of squid balls I'd had back in the Philippines, but the sauce took me straight back to the bustling streets of Manila. Pure nostalgia in a bite!

Opening night at the Richmond Night Market was delightful. The crowd was manageable compared to previous years, making it a relaxed and enjoyable experience. The lines were reasonable, and we could savour each dish without feeling rushed. We'll definitely be back for more around the first week of July. Hopefully, I'll shed a few more pounds by then and indulge in some meaty goodness. Or maybe I'll take on a vegetarian challenge and explore the fantastic vegetarian options the market offers. Either way, you can bet we'll be back for another delicious adventure!

Discovering Soup Curry Magic at Garaku Richmond

Happy Saturday! This weekend promised a solo adventure, with my husband away on a retreat. My initial plan was to visit Eggspectation in Richmond, BC, where my sister works. Filled with excitement for brunch and sibling bonding, I hopped into an Uber and sent a quick text announcing my arrival. But fate had other plans. A phone call from my sister revealed a tech glitch – their network or app was down, rendering the kitchen unable to receive orders. The prospect of brunch evaporated faster than my morning Uber bill!

Undeterred by this setback, my adventurous spirit kicked in. A quick bus ride later, I found myself at the doorstep of a relatively new Japanese restaurant in Aberdeen Centre – Soup Curry Garaku! Now, as a self-proclaimed Japanese curry aficionado, I'd had my fair share of the classic stewed goodness. But soup curry? This was uncharted territory.

Soup Curry Garaku boasts a rich heritage, hailing from Hokkaido, Japan. Intrigued by the concept of a "soup" version of my beloved curry, I decided to take the plunge. The menu recommended the Fried Chicken Leg, a classic take on their signature soup curry. This dish featured a slow-cooked chicken thigh, promising melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Fueled by a touch of competitive spirit, I opted for the 7 spice level. Looking back, this might have been a rookie mistake!

Fried Chicken Leg Garaku's Soup Curry

The curry arrived steaming hot, with vibrant colours and textures. The first spoonful was a fiery explosion – the 7 spice level was no joke! While the initial heat wave temporarily overshadowed the subtler flavours, I persevered (stubbornness is a virtue, right?). As the curry cooled slightly, the magic began to unfold. The rich, complex broth revealed a beautiful balance of savoury and slightly sweet notes. The slow-cooked chicken lived up to its promise, offering a delightful textural contrast to the soft vegetables – carrots, broccoli, potatoes, and mushrooms – perfectly cooked and bursting with flavour.

The fluffy five-grain rice (which, according to tradition, is meant to be dunked in the soup before taking a bite) provided a comforting base. Although the initial spice level threw me for a loop, once it subsided, I found myself appreciating the unique flavour profile of Soup Curry Garaku. It wasn't your typical Japanese curry stew but a delicious exploration of spice, savoury goodness, and fresh ingredients.

Five Grain Rice from Garaku Soup Curry in Richmond

While I wouldn't say this experience converted me into a full-fledged soup curry evangelist (my heart still holds a special place for the classic stewed version), it definitely opened my eyes (and taste buds!) to a new and exciting culinary adventure. Plus, with the abundance of unique dishes waiting to be explored in the Aberdeen food court, I'll be back for a return visit (at a slightly lower spice level, perhaps!).

So, if you're in the Richmond area and looking for a unique and flavorful Japanese dining experience, look no further than Soup Curry Garaku. This hidden gem offers a taste of Sapporo right here in British Columbia, and its friendly staff is always happy to guide you through the exciting world of soup curry. Just remember, when it comes to spice levels, know your limits—you might want to start a little lower than a fiery 7!

Filipino Birthday Fiesta from Little Ongpin and LA Chicken

Another year older, another reason to celebrate! This week, my husband turned another year wiser, and I wanted to make his birthday extra special, especially considering he's away from his family in the Philippines.

Remember when I first worried he might feel lonely after moving here? Well, this year's celebration was all about proving otherwise! It was a Filipino fiesta filled with family, laughter, and, of course, delicious food.

Filipino Birthday Fiesta in Vancouver from my mom, Little Ongpin, and LA Chicken

Staying true to our roots, I enlisted the help of my mom. Her home-cooked Filipino-style spaghetti, bursting with sweet and savory flavors, was the centerpiece of the table. To complement it, we ordered classic party favorites: crispy lumpiang shanghai and savory pork BBQ skewers from Little Ongpin, and juicy fried chicken from LA Chicken (satisfying my chicken craving), all from Little Ongpin, a taste of home right here in Canada.

Fried Chicken from LA Chicken

Looking back on my own childhood birthday parties in the Philippines, these were the exact same dishes that brought everyone together. Food isn't just sustenance; it's a language of love and tradition, and having these familiar flavors on the table instantly transported us back to happy memories.

14 pieces Filipino-style pork BBQ in skewer from Little Ongpin

Of course, there were more than just culinary delights. We captured the moment with laughter-filled photos, sang a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday", and watched as my husband blew out the candles on his cake.

Assorted Cheese Tart from Pablo

My mom even surprised him with biko and a refreshing Filipino fruit salad. And, as a sweet ending, my sister's boyfriend brought in a box of mouthwatering Japanese cheese tarts from Pablo. It was a day filled with love, laughter, and delicious surprises. Plus, I got to play Overcooked with my siblings.

Family dinner at Dai Jang Kum

My mom and dad are celebrating their wedding anniversary next month. Unfortunately, our dad is flying to the Philippines in the first week of January and will return in May, so we decided to celebrate their anniversary early. My mom requested that we eat at her favourite Korean restaurant, Dai Jung Kum, on Bridgeport Road.

We ordered our usual seafood pancakes, fried dumplings, japchae, and grilled meat (Combo A). The server suggested we get the Chef Special Combo for a better deal. She was right. It included the same BBQ meat combo of chicken, beef, beef short ribs, and pork, seafood pancake, japchae, pan-fried pork dumplings, and we got two try new items: spicy seafood tofu soup and smoked salmon salad.

Everything was amazing. It's nice spending time with the family and eating delicious food.

Haddock Fish & Chips from Ikea Restaurant

Happy Saturday! We went to Ikea today to buy a fitted sheet. Before walking around their maze, we grabbed our first meal of the day at the Ikea Restaurant.

I chose the Haddock Fish & Chips because I don't remember trying it before. My youngest sister absolutely loves this combo. How can you go wrong with fried fish and potatoes? It's a classic and is a safe bet.

Of course, my husband got the classic Ikea Meatballs, which does not disappoint. Everything is on point, and as we remember.

Grill Basha and Basha Poutine in Richmond Centre food court

After IKEA, my husband and I went to Richmond Centre for the Lego store. Then, we decided to grab a late lunch at the Richmond Centre food court. I spotted a new store called Basha. My husband suggested getting both items with the name of the food stall in it: the Basha Poutine and Grill Basha.

Grill Basha from Basha in Richmond Centre food court

The Grill Basha includes three meat skewers: chicken, beef, and lamb, with lamb being my favourite. However, the Basha Poutine topped with chicken is fantastic. I highly recommend their shawarma over anything from the grill.

It's lovely to see the food court so full of people, like usual.

IKEA Breakfast is back!

My family (parents and siblings) absolutely love the reasonably priced breakfast at Ikea. This morning, we went there for breakfast.

Ikea Breakfast with the Family

They still have the traditional breakfast with sausage and bacon. Then, they added pancakes with fruit, which was relatively new. Since I am still under the weather, we also got a bowl of soup.

Before USA Flight Dinner at Sal Y Limon Mexican Cuisine in YVR

It's a beautiful Friday evening. I asked permission to leave an hour early from work today because we have a flight to catch. We are flying to Los Angeles for the weekend. After going through security and immigration, I chose to have dinner at Sal Y Limon Mexican Cuisine.

Chorizo Quesadillas from Sal Y limon Mexican Cuisine
10-inch flour tortilla filled with melted cheese topped with cabbage and sour cream with chorizo

I chose the Beef Burrito. Meanwhile, my husband has no food preferences but requested that I choose something easy to eat. I picked the Chorizo Quesadillas for him.

Beef Burritos from Sal Y Limon Mexican Cuisine
12-inch wheat tortilla, rice, beans, cabbage, jalapeno, sour cream, and chipotle mayo

The chorizo is definitely the better and more flavourful protein, but the beef burrito is more satisfying.

Can't wait to board our flight!

Where to eat in Vancouver International Airport? Salmon N' Bannock on the Fly

We're flying out of Vancouver International Airport today, and I am making recommendations on which one is worth trying.

Before security (if you're waiting for someone or bringing someone to the airport), Japadog in the domestic terminal is my top recommendation. If you're flying internationally and want to avoid walking to the domestic terminal, the local Richmond chain, Pajo's, is an excellent choice for supporting local businesses.

After security, for international flights, I highly recommend Salmon n' Bannock to get a taste of Indigenous flavours and cooking.

We grabbed dinner at Salmon n' Bannock while waiting for our flight. They have a restaurant in Vancouver, so we have tried most of their dishes. Today, we focused on the sandwiches for something light.

Hubby and I shared the BBQ Salmon Salad Sandwich and Lox Sandwich. The bun is the traditional soft bannocks. đŸ¤¤

They're both delicious and a bit messy. I have always been a fan of Lox Sandwiches, usually with bagels, so this is the first time I am having it with Bannock, and it's just perfect.

Cured salmon lox, dill cream cheese, capers, and red onion between a bannock.

Meanwhile, the BBQ Salmon Salad Sandwich is messy to eat, and it's like a tuna sandwich but with salmon and in-between bannocks.

We also got a discounted pumpkin spice scone, and it was so good. I recommend a scone and coffee from here if you need a quick breakfast. It was warm and moist.

This was such a lovely last meal in Vancouver before our flight. I am writing on my phone, and please excuse the typo.

Food Adventure at Richmond Night Market

Happy Sunday! My husband and I purchased a Zoom Pass to Richmond Night Market and used two of the five available entries on opening night last April 28.

We're back today and have reviewed the food booths and menu in my other post. We also enjoyed food from the top 10 list.

F4. Thai Street Grill

I have tried grilled meat from three stalls and found F4 Thai Street Grill to be my favourite. Both the giant chicken stick and sirloin beef stick were perfectly grilled and juicy. It's slightly sweet as well. It's perfect with a cup of white rice (or that could be the Filipino in me talking).

Sirloin Beef Stick and Giant Chicken Stick from Thai Street Grill (F4)

F24. Ebi Ball

After enjoying our skewers, we started reviewing each food booth for any changes in their menu and price. Then, we had Ebi Balls. Ebi balls are a popular Japanese snack made with shrimp. It has a crisp exterior with succulent shrimp in the middle.

Miso Mayo Ebi Ball from F24 Ebi Ball

F91. Big Beard BBQ Deep-Fried Squid

Then, we looked at the top 10 list and ordered based on that. We started with Deep Fried Squid from F91. The outer batter is crispy and golden, providing a satisfying crunch that gives way to the tender and succulent squid within. The squid's interior maintains a delicate and slightly chewy texture, creating a delightful contrast with the crispy exterior.

Garlic and Pepper Deep Fried Squid from F91 Big Beard BBQ

F86. Fresh Squeeze Lemonade

We were thirsty afterwards and got the original lemonade in a 64 oz bucket (8 cups) from F86. It came with an LED cube and rubber ducky. đŸ¤£ It's worth it! We drank it all evening and didn't finish until 10:30 PM.

A bucket of Original Lemonade from F86. Fresh Squeeze Lemonade

F31. Aloha Boys

Afterwards, we succumbed to peer pressure and the top 10 list and ordered the Original Flying Cup Noodles. It's definitely Instagram-worthy but not my thing. It is instant noodles displayed spectacularly.

Original Flying Cup Noodles from  F31 Aloha Boys

We also ordered Spam Masubi. It's spam and rice, which I enjoy, but I need more spam. The ratio was off. We're pleased to report that we removed the plastic wrap around it. We almost didn't. đŸ˜…

Spam Musubi from F31 Aloha Boys

F48. The Rolling Crepe

After eating carbs, we went for dessert at F48 Crepe Crème Brûlèe. I love that it's not overly sweet and has many different textures: soft crepe, crunchy cornflakes, creamy custard, and a crusty top to complete everything.

F48. Classic Crepe Creme Brulee fromThe Rolling Crepe
Freshly made crepe filled with fresh berries, whipped cream, crunchy frosty blames, Nutella drizzle, topped with vanilla bean custard, and bruleed for crispy sugar coating/

By the time we finished, I needed to sit, so we went near the stage to enjoy live performances.

F93. Big Beard Meat Skewers

Afterwards, we went to F93 for four skewers: AAA Steak Beef, Premium Cumin Lamb, Honey Garlic Chicken, & Classic BBQ Prawn. Get the lamb. It's the best and only one worth getting.

4 Skewers from Big Beard Meat Skewer

F30. Cheesy Corn

For our last food item, we went to F30 for some cheesy corn. How can you go wrong with sweet corn topped with salty and savoury melted cheese? It is also part of the top 10 list.

Cheezy Sweet Corn from F30

We walked to the Sky Train Station, where I'm writing this inside the moving train heading north.

Thank God for the many blessings and for my hubby, who willingly walked with me while updating my blog. I'm truly blessed and grateful.
