Bento Boxes from Sushi Tendo

Happy Friday! After a long week working from home, I decided to shake things up and join a last-minute meetup organized by Tech2Step. This innovative group organizes networking walks along the scenic Seawall, starting at Science World. It's a fantastic way to connect with fellow tech professionals, all while enjoying the beauty of the Vancouver waterfront.

The walk itself was a delightful mix of networking and reminiscing. As I chatted with a couple of Filipino immigrants who were new to Canada and looking for work opportunities, I couldn't help but be reminded of my own journey. Memories of my initial struggles upon arriving in Canada and navigating the job search resurfaced – a bittersweet reminder of how far I've come.

With a heart full of emotions and legs that had enjoyed a good workout, my husband and I ended the evening with a delicious (and light!) dinner. Sushi Tendo on Cambie Street beckoned, and we happily obliged.

Now, being a Friday during Lent presented a slight challenge. However, Sushi Tendo offered a perfect solution – various delectable options that adhered to our fasting restrictions.

For a shared appetizer, we opted for the assorted tempura. This came with a generous portion of four juicy prawns and four pieces of mixed vegetables, all cloaked in a tempura batter that was slightly oilier than anticipated. Despite the somewhat heavier batter, the star of the show remained the perfectly cooked shrimp and vegetables – fresh, flavorful, and a delightful prelude to the main course.

For my main event, I selected the Bento D. A dynamite roll added a touch of spice, while the salmon and tuna sashimi were melt-in-your-mouth fresh. The salmon teriyaki on rice provided a comforting savoury element, completing the bento experience perfectly.

Hubby opted for the Bento E. This feast for the eyes (and the stomach!) included four pieces of nigiri sushi – a vibrant selection of salmon, tuna, shrimp (ebi), and hokkigai (surf clam). Three pieces of takoyaki (octopus dumplings) offered a textural contrast, while the unagi (BBQ eel) on rice added a touch of smoky sweetness.

Both bento boxes came with a refreshing miso soup and a crisp salad, the perfect complement to the main dishes. It was a light yet satisfying meal, ideal for a post-walk dinner and a reminder that deliciousness doesn't have to be heavy.

As we continued our walk home, our conversation flowed freely – a testament to the power of a shared experience and the joy of good company. I felt a deep sense of gratitude – for the blessing of a supportive husband, fulfilling work, and the peaceful city and country we now call home. Evenings like this, filled with connection, delicious food, and appreciation, are the ones I cherish most.

Nachos, Burger, and Fries from Romer's

Fueled by a delicious Pi Day celebration with a slice of The Pie Hole's magic (see previous post!), it was time to catch up with family. Across the street awaited Romer's, a familiar haunt with memories of past lunches with former colleagues. The company was even better tonight – my sister, her boyfriend, and the promise of a fun-filled evening.

As the conversation flowed, we delved into work and careers. My sister's boyfriend shared some work-related challenges, and we offered a listening ear and words of encouragement. Hopefully, the evening's camaraderie provided a much-needed boost!

For me, Romer's held a special significance. This place was a monthly ritual with my old team, a haven of delicious burgers and good times. It had been over five years since my last visit, and a pang of nostalgia hit me as I scanned the menu. Naturally, my eyes gravitated toward my old favourite – the Magic Mushroom burger.

The Magic Mushroom was once my go-to comfort food. The combination of caramelized onions, a juicy Portobello mushroom, creamy Boursin cheese, peppery arugula, and a touch of olive oil aioli used to be a symphony of flavours. Sadly, tonight's rendition fell a bit short. While the ingredients were all there, the magic spark seemed to be missing. It wasn't quite as flavorful or satisfying as I remembered.

Despite the slight burger letdown, the rest of the meal was a resounding success. The Big Basket of Fries lived up to its name. These weren't your average limp fries – these were hand-cut on-site, boasting a satisfying crispness and a flavour that only fresh potatoes can deliver. To elevate them to another level, I opted for the garlic fries upgrade, a decision I definitely didn't regret. The added garlicky punch was a perfect complement to the salty richness of the fries.

The real showstopper, however, was the Nachos Valentina for Two. Imagine a mountain of crispy tortilla chips (fried in-house, no less!) smothered in a blanket of spicy cheese. A vibrant medley of jalapenos, olives, and green onions added a delightful mix of textures and flavours. The Valentina sauce provided a welcome kick, while the chipotle aioli offered a smoky counterpoint.

While the burger may not have lived up to past glories, the overall experience was heartwarming. There's something extraordinary about sharing good food and good company with loved ones. Laughter, conversation, and the comfort of familiar surroundings make evenings like this truly unforgettable.

Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Cream Pie from The Pie Hole | Pi Day 2024

Pi Day (3.14) is a celebration near and dear to our hearts and stomachs! My husband and I have a long-standing tradition of marking this mathematical marvel with a delicious slice of pie. Last year, we revelled in a juicy peach pie; the year before, we opted for a savoury pizza (because, hey, pie comes in all shapes and sizes, right?), and the memories keep stacking up.

This year, we decided to commemorate Pi Day with a visit to The Pie Hole in Kitsilano. Little did we know, it was their last day at this location before their big move to West Broadway and Balaclava Street! Talk about perfect timing (or a touch of destiny). We eagerly stepped inside, ready to choose our Pi Day pie.

Unfortunately, the post-work rush left them with a single sweet pie option—the Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Cream Pie. Intrigued by the unique combination, we decided to take a chance. Let's just say it was a risk that paid off in the most delectable way!

The pie boasted a pressed crust with a surprising blend of hazelnuts, coconut, and oats. The coconut flavour was surprisingly prominent, even though it wasn't visually apparent. This unique crust offered a delightful textural contrast – a satisfying crumble giving way to a hint of chewiness.

A pressed crust of hazelnuts, coconut, and oats (GF) and a creamy chocolate filling topped with vegan whip and toasted coconut ribbons.

But the real star of the show was the creamy chocolate filling. Imagine a smooth, rich, decadent concoction that melted in your mouth with every bite. A dollop of vegan whip added a touch of lightness, while toasted coconut ribbons provided a delightful textural surprise and a subtle sweetness that perfectly complemented the chocolate. Each spoonful was a symphony, an ode to deliciousness and a tribute to Pi Day.

Traditional Poutine with Pulled Pork at Original Joe's

Happy Thursday! It is time for another company-paid team lunch! This week's theme celebrated the humble spud – the mighty potato! In true team spirit, we walked to the nearby Original Joe's in Robson, eager to explore their potato-centric offerings.

Staying true to the theme, I opted for a Canadian classic – the poutine. There's nothing quite like a poutine to satisfy a potato craving. Crispy golden fries formed the base, each bite offering a satisfying crunch. Then came the magic – a generous layer of melted cheese curds, their creamy texture and mild flavour, the perfect foil for the salty fries.

I opted for the pulled pork topping to add a bit of protein punch. My vision was a delightful, sweet, and savoury combination. However, the pulled pork arrived unadorned, devoid of any sauce I had anticipated. It was simply shredded pork, relying solely on the rich, flavorful gravy for moisture.

While the poutine wasn't quite the explosion of flavour I envisioned, it was still a hearty and comforting dish. The gravy was the star of the show – a savoury concoction that tied everything together. Each bite was a delightful combination of textures: the crispness of the fries, the gooeyness of the cheese curds, and the tender chew of the pulled pork.

When we finished our lunches, a contented silence filled the table. Let's just say our "food coma" hit hard upon returning to our desks! But isn't that what team lunches are all about—good food, good company, and a little post-lunch snooze (I fought really hard and found ways to keep myself awake and productive)? Despite the slight letdown on the pulled pork, it was still a fun-filled afternoon celebrating the spud and fostering team spirit.

Prosciutto and Bocconcini Focaccia from Lovelarte

Happy Wednesday! Today was anything but ordinary - it was brinner day! For those unfamiliar with this glorious portmanteau, it combines breakfast and dinner into one epic meal. But this wasn't your average solo pajana-clas feast. Today's brinner was a virtual company-wide celebration, a way to connect with our colleagues across time zones.

Since our company has offices in Vancouver, Melbourne, and Cork, mealtimes get a little interesting. Our breakfast in Vancouver meant early dinner for our team in Cork! We kicked things off with some fun St. Patrick's Day trivia - the laughter and friendly competition setting a lively tone for the morning.

After the virtual merriment, it was time for breakfast! My colleague and I walked to nearby Lovelarte.

I chose the Prosciutto and Bocconcini Focaccia sandwich. This beauty boasted layers of thinly sliced prosciutto, its rich, salty flavour a perfect counterpoint to the creamy, melt-in-your-moth bocconcini mozzarella. Slices of juicy red tomat added a burst of freshness, while the peppery arugula offered a delight bite. But the treu star of the show was the basil pesto sauce. The nutty richness tired everything together!

To complement this savory masterpiece, I opted for a small mocha. The rich, cocoa-y notes of the espresso blended beautifully with the creamy sweetness of the steamed milk, creating a warm and comforting drink that perfectly balanced the boldness of the sandwich.

Overall, it was a fantastic start to the day. The virtual fun with colleagues, the delicious brinner from Lovelarte, and the feeling of connection that transcended time zones – it all came together to create a truly memorable Wednesday!

Boston's Lasagna from Boston Pizza

Our delightful Sunday at Waves Coffee House continued with a playful debate – cook at home or venture out for dinner? Knowing I was still basking in the afterglow of the Caprese sandwich (who could blame me?), hubby gallantly suggested we eat out, sparing me from kitchen duty. With that settled, Boston Pizza became our destination.

Still feeling the effects of that fantastic sandwich, I opted for a familiar favourite: the Cactus Cuts. These crispy, golden-fried delights are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and tonight was no exception. Each bite offered a satisfying crunch followed by a soft middle. A touch of dipping sauce added the perfect finishing touch.

Spicy and thinly sliced fried potatoes served with our signature cactus dip.

Meanwhile, hubby embarked on a mission to conquer Boston Pizza's extensive menu. I suggested exploring the pasta section to help him navigate the vast options. Intrigued by the namesake Boston's Lasagna, he decided to take the plunge.

A baked combination of beefy Bolognese sauce, lasagna noodles, and pizza mozzarella with freshly grated Parmesan.

This dish turned out to be a revelation! Imagine layers of perfectly cooked lasagna noodles swimming in a rich and meaty Bolognese sauce. Creamy mozzarella cheese added a touch of indulgence, while a final flourish of freshly grated Parmesan provided a delightful savoury note.

I never thought I'd be the one raving about a non-pizza item at Boston Pizza. But here we are! This lasagna was a testament to their culinary versatility, proving that deliciousness extends far beyond their classic pies. Hubby's satisfied smile and my empty plate were all the evidence we needed.

Now, with happy bellies and a heart full of Sunday Funday memories, we can't wait to return to Boston Pizza. Next time, we'll delve deeper into their enticing pasta world, venturing beyond the namesake dish.

Lemon Coocnut Macaroon Bar and A La Capresse Sandwich from Waves Coffee House

Happy Sunday! After a less-than-stellar lunch at Tim Hortons (we all have those days!), hubby and I decided to go to Waves Coffee House for a productive afternoon. With laptops in tow, we settled into the inviting ambiance, ready to conquer our to-do lists.

While hubby delved into his work, I channelled my post-lunch slump into creative energy. The rhythmic clatter of keyboards provided a satisfying soundtrack as I tackled writing tasks, including this blog post! But a productive afternoon deserves a little indulgence, right? Enter the lemon coconut macaroon bar.

Smooth lemon filling with crunchy toasted coconut sits atop a decadent shortbread crust.

This delightful treat was a symphony of textures and flavours. Imagine a smooth lemon filling, tart and refreshing, nestled on a bed of decadent shortbread crust. The crowning glory? A generous layer of crunchy toasted coconut adds a delightful textural contrast. It was the perfect pick-me-up, a burst of sweetness that fueled my writing without derailing my focus.

A couple of blissful hours flew by, filled with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the gentle hum of conversation. But as the afternoon wore on, a different craving emerged – a savoury one. Waves' mouthwatering Caprese sandwich was calling my name. And who could resist?

The sandwich was a visual delight – vibrant pesto, fresh spinach, perfectly ripe tomato slices, and creamy bocconcini cheese piled high, all nestled between a buttery warm croissant. Each bite was a perfect marriage of textures and flavours: the soft bread yielding to the creamy cheese, the juicy tomato adding a touch of freshness, and the pesto pulling everything together.

With satisfied bellies and a productive afternoon under our belts, we decided to call it a day. Waves Coffee House was the perfect haven for a relaxing and productive Sunday – a place to fuel the body and the mind with a few delicious detours!

Slow-Cooked Sweet Chili Chicken Loaded Wrap and Crispy Sweet Chili Chicken Loaded Bowl from Tim Hortons

Fresh from a Sunday morning service, hubby and I decided to grab lunch at Tim Hortons. The siren song of "new menu item" was too strong to resist, and I was particularly eager to try the Sweet Chili Chicken Loaded Wrap and Bowl. After all, who can say no to a sweet and savoury flavour combination?

Armed with an optimistic spirit and rumbling bellies, we approached the counter. I explored the full spectrum of chicken options, opting for the crispy chicken in the bowl and the slow-cooked chicken in the wrap.

The presentation was promising. The bowl and wrap boasted a vibrant mix of colours and textures: fluffy rice, crisp lettuce, diced tomatoes, and, of course, the star of the show – the sweet chilli chicken. We eagerly dug in, anticipation bubbling over.

However, our initial excitement quickly gave way to a wave of disappointment. The "sweet chilli" sauce, which held so much potential, was overwhelmingly sweet. There was a complete absence of any heat, leaving the dish feeling one-dimensional. Don't get me wrong, I love a good sweet and savoury balance, but this was a full-on sugar rush masquerading as a savoury meal.

For someone who enjoys a touch of spice, the complete lack of heat was a major letdown. It felt like a missed opportunity to create a truly dynamic flavour profile. While the textures were pleasant – the crispy chicken in the bowl offered a satisfying crunch, while the slow-cooked chicken in the wrap was tender – the overpowering sweetness overshadowed everything else.

Veggie Burrito Bowl and Veggie Nachos from Quesada

Happy Friday, everyone! Today was extra special, not just because it's the end of the week but also because it's International Women's Day! And to celebrate, I had the incredible opportunity to attend an event that resonated with me.

My sister invited me to "Breaking Barriers: Pinays in Tech - Navigating Tech Opportunities in YVR," held at the Consulate General of the Philippines. It was my first tech event in a long time, and let me tell you, it was electrifying! Back in the Philippines, I was heavily involved in organizing similar events, so coming full circle and attending one here in Canada was incredibly special.

The event itself was truly inspiring. The all-female speaker lineup consisted of accomplished Filipinas making waves in the Vancouver tech scene. Each woman shared their personal journeys, the challenges they faced, and the triumphs they achieved. These stories resonated deeply with me. We often talk about the importance of representation, but there's something compelling about hearing the experiences of others who share your background. It's a reminder that you're not alone and that anything is possible.

Large Veggie Bowl from Quesada

Feeling energized and empowered, my sister, hubby, and I decided to grab some celebratory dinner at Quesada nearby. Now, while the event was a home run, the food at Quesada wasn't quite a grand slam. Hubby opted for the large Veggie Bowl with brown rice. It was decent but nothing extraordinary – something you wouldn't necessarily write home about.

Nachos from Quesada
Crispy corn tortilla chips and your choice of toppings, baked with Monterey Jack Cheddar cheese, served with your choice of sauce and salsa.

Similarly, the veggie nachos fell short. As a self-proclaimed nacho aficionado, you can never go wrong with chips and cheese. However, in this case, the crispy corn tortilla chips and melted Monterey Jack Cheddar cheese weren't enough to elevate the other ingredients.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie and Chocolate Chunk Cookie from Quesada

Despite the slightly disappointing meal, the afternoon was a resounding success. We spent the next hour chatting about the event, dissecting the speakers' journeys, and sharing our experiences. I cherish these simple moments of connection with my sister the most. Here's to celebrating strong women, forging our paths in the tech world, and cherishing the power of sisterhood!

Buon Appetito at the New Office: Celebrating with Spicy Salmon Pasta from Luca Restaurant

Happy Thursday, everyone! As you might guess from the title, today was extra special – our first-ever company lunch in our brand-new office! Since it's a brand-new space, everything felt fresh and exciting, and the cherry on top? An Italian food-themed team lunch!

Being tasked with ordering for the whole team meant a quick mission to find the perfect spot that ticked all the boxes: deliciousness, variety, and something everyone could enjoy. Thankfully, trusty Uber Eats came to the rescue, leading me to Luca Restaurant.

Their Spicy Salmon Pasta immediately jumped off the screen. Imagine slow-cooked, flaky salmon tossed with peppery arugula nestled on a perfectly cooked linguine pasta bed. To top it all off, the dish boasted a vibrant spicy tomato sauce.

And let me tell you, it didn't disappoint! The slow-cooked salmon melted in my mouth, perfectly complementing the peppery kick of the arugula. The linguine held everything together beautifully, while the spicy tomato sauce added a welcome layer of warmth. It was a perfect midday pick-me-up, fueling our conversations and fostering a sense of camaraderie as we settled into our new workspace.

More than just a delicious meal, this company lunch was a fantastic way to kick off our new chapter. It was a chance to connect with colleagues, bond over shared tastes, and celebrate this new space's exciting possibilities. So, here's to many more delicious lunches and collaborative victories in our excellent new office!

Uni and Crab Carbonara Udon from Suika

The tranquillity of our Sunday afternoon at Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee lingered as we strolled out, feeling recharged and ready for some evening fun. With a mischievous grin, I turned to hubby and asked, "Dinner at Suika?" His immediate "yes" was music to my ears! After all, it had been a while since I'd indulged in the restaurant's culinary magic.

Suika has always been my happy place. It's where familiar flavours evoke pure comfort and where the warm ambiance feels like a giant hug. Tonight was no different. My heart skipped a beat as I ordered my Signature Beef Curry with Tonkatsu topping. The anticipation was real!

But before diving into my beloved curry, we started with a shared appetizer: chicken dashi karaage. These bite-sized delights were a revelation! Each piece of chicken thigh was juicy and tender on the inside, encased in a crispy, golden brown batter. The secret? A rich dashi shoyu flavour permeated every bite. It was a delightful explosion of textures and tastes, the perfect way to whet our appetites for the main course.

And then it arrived. The aroma was intoxicating – a symphony of fragrant spices mingling with the comforting scent of simmered beef. The first bite was pure bliss. The stewed beef tendon curry was everything I remembered: perfectly creamy, rich, and bursting with flavour. Each mouthful was a warm hug for my soul. The Tonkatsu topping was the piece de resistance. The fattiness and crispiness of the fried pork cutlet provided a delightful contrast to the creamy curry, adding an exciting textural element and a pop of savoury goodness.

Hubby decided to embark on a culinary journey of his own. He opted for the Uni and Crab Carbonara Udon. Now, I'll admit I was a bit apprehensive at first. But his first satisfied slurp quickly silenced my doubts. The carbonara-style Udon noodles were perfectly cooked, offering a satisfying chewiness. The rich sea urchin cream sauce was a revelation – creamy, luxurious, and bursting with the essence of the ocean. The actual crab meat and ikura (salmon roe) added a textural contrast and a touch of briny delight.

A contented silence filled the table as we savoured the last morsels of our dishes. Suika had once again lived up to its reputation, offering not just delicious food but an experience. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best way to unwind is to indulge in the familiar while also embracing the opportunity to try something new. With full bellies and happy hearts, we left Suika ready to face the week ahead, feeling refreshed and inspired.

Hot Chocolate from Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee

Hubby and I opted for a relaxing afternoon at Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee, a welcome change from the usual post-Mass routine of staying home.

While I settled in with my laptop, ready to write the long BC Place menu blog post, Hubby enjoyed a refreshing change of scenery while doing his own projects. The cozy atmosphere at Trees, with its warm lighting and inviting aroma, was the perfect backdrop for a productive yet peaceful afternoon.

For my beverage, I opted for a classic hot chocolate. While it was decent and hit the spot, the ones at Blenz or Waves still hold the top spot for me. On the other hand, Hubby went for a more decadent option – a mocha.

Hot Chocolate from Trees Cheesecake + Organic Coffee

To share, we decided on a slice of lemon loaf. This delightful treat was the perfect accompaniment to our drinks. Imagine a light and airy crumb infused with the refreshing tang of lemon and topped with a hint of sugary sweetness. It was ideal for satisfying our afternoon cravings without feeling overly indulgent.

Overall, our Sunday afternoon at Trees was a delightful escape. The delicious coffee, the cozy ambiance, and the chance to work in a relaxed setting made it a perfect way to recharge for the week ahead.

Nacho Fries, Chicken Tenders, and Wings from Fatburger

The final whistle blew at BC Place. The Whitecaps had fought hard, but the scoreboard reflected a 1-1 draw against Charlotte FC. They definitely had their chances, making the result sting even more.

Needing some serious comfort food therapy, I texted my brother, "Where do you want to find comfort?" His reply was immediate: "I want greasy comfort food: burgers." He was thinking of Five Guys, but he warned us to prepare for a crowd.

Feeling famished after the game, we trudged down Robson Street alongside hundreds of other Whitecaps supporters, each one dissecting the match with animated gestures. As expected, Five Guys was overflowing. But hey, there's always a Plan B.

A block or so away, Fatburger beckoned with the promise of juicy, greasy goodness—perfect. However, my stomach was still full from the pre-game feast at BC Place, so I decided to sample a variety of smaller bites.

First up: Nachos Fries. Crispy, golden-brown fries formed the base. Then, it was smothered in a rich, hearty chili that offers a pleasant kick. Shredded cheddar cheese added a creamy touch, and the juicy tomatoes and tangy jalapeños brought a welcome freshness. The accompanying guacamole and sour cream provided the perfect dipping options, allowing me to customize the flavour profile with each bite.

Next, I couldn't resist the Chicken Tenders. These crispy delights were everything the menu promised—perfectly battered, hand-breaded, and fried to golden perfection. Each bite was a delightful explosion of juicy chicken and crispy coating.

Buffalo Wings and Tenders Meal from Fatburger
Why choose? Combine two juicy tenders and six mouth-watering wings. Served with signature wing sauce, dipping sauce, crispy skin on fries, and a drink.

Then, I shared an order of Buffalo Wings with Honey Garlic sauce with my husband. The crispy breading gave way to tender, fall-off-the-bone chicken, perfectly coated in the sweet and slightly spicy honey garlic sauce.

Finally, to truly soothe our post-game disappointment, we couldn't resist sharing an order of 5 Mini Donuts. These bite-sized delights were dusted with fragrant cinnamon sugar, offering a warm and comforting sweetness. Each drunk into the rich caramel dipping sauce added a decadent touch, creating a perfect balance of sweet and salty.

While the game result wasn't ideal, the post-match feast at Fatburger definitely helped lift our spirits (and fill our bellies).
