Third time at the Vancouver Christmas Market 2023

Since it's a clear evening with no rain in the forecast, my husband suggested we go to the Vancouver Christmas Market. After work, we thought of walking to Jack Poole Plaza, but it's so cold. I couldn't feel my face, so we stopped at the south side of Burrard Bridge to catch Bus 2 on Cornwall.

I'm still reviewing the list of food items we have yet to try, which you can check here.

Roasted Tomato Soup from Das Soup Haus

Since I am super cold, we went to Das Soup Haus and noticed they had added a Ham & Cheese Croissant to their menu. I paired it with the Roasted Tomato Soup. Of course, the soup is not burning hot. It's warm enough for this evening. Be sure to devour it because it will get cold fast.

Meanwhile, the Ham & Cheese Croissant is perfect for dipping in the tarty soup.

Vogue Cakes Bakery

Afterwards, we went to Vague Cakes Bakery. Have they always been here?! I don't remember; this is my third time at the Vancouver Christmas Market. We decided on the Schnecken Sticky Pecan Rolls out of the few sweets they offer. It's perfect for this evening! It's a warm cinnamon roll topped with pecans. Surprisingly, it is not overly sweet.

Currywurst and Cheesy Bacon Twist from Bratwurst Haus

Going through the long list of German sausages available at Bratwurst, I went for the Currywurst while hubby got the Cheesy Bacon Twist.

The Currywurst has bite-sized chunks of my favourite thuringer brat and it is drowning in a curry-based sauce which means a bit of spiciness and tart from the ketchup. I love it. However, I still prefer the Thuringer brat.

The cheesy bacon twist is the Bavarian Smokie we tried last week, wrapped in delicious crispy bacon. If you love bacon, this is perfect. The sauerkraut also helped with the fattiness of the sausage.

Black Forest Cake from Das Strudel Haus

After a savoury and saucy currywurst, I crave something sweet, so I went for the Black Forest Cake from Das Strudel Haus. It has a soft and moist chocolate cake based with tarty cherry compote in the middle and generous whipped cream on top.

It's the perfect ending for our food night at the Vancouver Christmas Market.

NEW Grilled Chimichurri Steak at Cactus Club Cafe

Welcome to a gastronomic adventure at Cactus Club Cafe, where the fusion of flavours and the artistry of presentation elevate your dining experience. Our small team of three recently had the pleasure of indulging in a delightful Christmas dinner at the Vancouver office, and the star of the evening was undoubtedly the new Grilled Chimichurri Steak paired with a refreshing Key Lime Pie.

The Main Course: Grilled Chimichurri Steak (8oz CAB® sirloin)

One word - phenomenal. The Grilled Chimichurri Steak, featuring an 8oz CAB® sirloin, stole the spotlight with its impeccable preparation and delectable taste. Cooked to a perfect medium, the steak boasted a succulent texture complemented by the rich flavours of the chimichurri sauce. The marriage of tender meat buttered mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables created a symphony of flavours that left a lasting impression. This dish is a must-try for steak enthusiasts and anyone seeking a culinary journey beyond the ordinary.

Dessert Delight: Key Lime Pie

After savouring the hearty main course, it was time for a dessert that would balance the meal perfectly. Opting for the Key Lime Pie proved to be an excellent choice. Made with freshly squeezed key limes and a divine graham cracker crust, each bite was a burst of citrusy goodness. The hand-whipped cream on top added a light and airy texture, creating a harmonious blend of sweet and tangy notes.

The Ambiance and Service

Beyond the exquisite dishes, Cactus Club Cafe's inviting ambiance and attentive service deserve special mention. The modern yet cozy atmosphere sets the stage for an enjoyable dining experience, while the friendly and knowledgeable staff ensures that every guest feels welcomed and well taken care of.

Moreover, the view of North Vancouver and the Vancouver Harbour shining on a surprisingly clear, crisp Thursday evening is extraordinary.

Salmon Chowder Puff Pot Pie delivered from A La Mode Pie Express in Granville Island Public Market

The workweek can be a whirlwind of endless emails, long customer phone calls, and other tasks in between, but one thing brings joy to the Thursday routine at our office - team lunch! This week's theme? The timeless and versatile delight that is pie. We decided to treat ourselves to a delectable spread from A La Mode Pie Express, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary.

I chose the Salmon Chowder Puff Pot Pie from the extensive pie menu. It's delivered and packaged perfectly. We're impressed.

The smokiness of the salmon, the richness of the creamy broth, and the heartiness of the potatoes created a bowl of comfort and indulgence.

Smoked salmon in a creamy New England-style broth with hearty potatoes and herbs.

What truly set the Salmon Chowder Puff Pot Pie apart was the pièce de résistance—the puff pastry on top. A satisfying crunch ensued as I broke through the golden, flaky layers, revealing the velvety, steaming contents beneath. The contrast in textures, from the crisp pastry to the creamy filling, elevated the dining experience to new heights.

A Thursday team lunch centred around the pie, especially the Salmon Chowder Puff Pot Pie from A La Mode Pie Express, turned a regular workday into a memorable culinary adventure.

Local Public Eatery's Beef Nachos in Gastown

Happy Tuesday! We welcomed a new colleague at the Vancouver office today, and to celebrate, we went to the Local Public Eatery, nestled in the vibrant Gastown district of Vancouver. I am feeling snacky, so I chose the beef nachos for lunch.

The symphony begins with the crisp, crunchy tortilla chips. Savoury spiced ground beef, a bold and tender centrepiece, harmonizes with the velvety richness of melted cheese.

The ensemble is elevated by the fresh burst of pico de gallo, the fiery kick of jalapeños, the tangy twist of pickled onions, and the cool contrast of sour cream.

Local Public Eatery's Beef Nachos is a balanced and indulgent experience where textures and tastes are carefully curated to exemplify the artistry of local cuisine in Vancouver.

Italian Deli and Roast Beef from Mangia's Sandwiches in South Granville

After an afternoon in Blenz and before walking home, we decided to grab dinner at the relatively newly opened Mangia's Sandwiches. I got the Italian Deli and Roast Beef, both made "classic," which means they come with provolone, dressed lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and mayo.

The starting point of every sandwich at Mangia's is the bakery-fresh white baguette with its crusty exterior and soft, airy interior. As you take each bite, your palate encounters the crisp freshness of dressed lettuce, providing a satisfying crunch, while ripe tomatoes burst with juicy sweetness, adding a refreshing contrast. Thinly sliced onions contribute a subtle sharpness, enhancing the overall flavour profile. The creamy richness of mayo binds the layers, offering a velvety texture. Lastly, with its creamy and slightly tangy notes, the provolone blankets the meats, melting and marrying the flavours together.

The Roast Beef offers a rich, savoury flavour complemented by the enticing aroma of the other topping.

But both hubby and I agreed that Italian Deli is the way to go. The mortadella brings a luxurious and mildly spiced flavour, while the Genoa salami adds a savoury and robust profile, creating a perfect balance.

I can't wait to come back and try their other meat.

Hazelnut Crisp Hot Chocolate and Gingerbread Latte from Blenz

It's our annual planning. Yes, my husband and I do this thing when we meet once a year to review the year that was, plan for the following year, and make sure we're still aligned.

This year, we had it at Blenz in the corner of West Broadway and Granville. We ordered their seasonal drinks: Gingerbread Latte and Hazelnut Crisp Hot Chocolate.

The Gingerbread Latte does not taste like gingerbread at all.

Meanwhile, the first sip of the hot chocolate is a strong taste of the crisp. Then, it's all delicious chocolatey goodness.

Pesti Chicken Wrap from Blenz
Chicken, cheese, lettuce, bell peppers, onions, spinach, pesto sauce

After our planning, I wrote a few more blog posts before deciding we needed lunch, and I got two wraps: the Pesto Chicken Wrap and BBQ Steak Wrap.

I'm not a fan of the BBQ Steak Wrap. It was not delicious. Thankfully, the Pesto Chicken Wrap was surprisingly acceptable for a coffee shop lunch.

Praying for a blessed 2024. We're grateful for 2023.

Breakfast at Denny's Test Kitchen

A blessed Sunday morning to you. Instead of the usual Tim Hortons breakfast, we decided to finally try the Denny's Test Kitchen and try breakfast items with the TK indicator.

My husband went for the All-Canadian Diner Breakfast while I chose the Classic Eggs Benedict. I'm actually surprised that benny is not part of their usual menu.

I absolutely love the breakfast poutine of Denny's and in their Test Kitchen menu, there's a Brisket Poutine which we also ordered for sharing.

The Classic Eggs Benedict is as classic as it's going to get. Denny's have a pretty good hollandaise sauce. I also enjoy dipping the red potatoes on the hollandaise. Yum!

Meanwhile, hubby's All-Canadian Diner is standard too with eggs, hash browns, bacon and sausage, and toast. Again, this is hard to screw up.

Of course, the one I'm looking forward to is the Brisket Poutine. It arrived with wavy-cut fries topped with brisket. The meat was dry but their gravy was surprisngly good and works so well with the curds.

Beagle Breakfast at The Regal Beagle Bar and Grill

This post is written by my husband.

Earlier today, I volunteered at church in setting up the Nativity Scene and Christmas Lights. It took us almost the whole day to finish everything. Around mid-day, we decided to have a quick brunch before continuing with the rest of the work. We went to The Regal Beagle Bar and Grill and I ordered the Beagle Breakfast and coffee.

It was such a great brunch and we felt reenergized afterwards.

Dating Myself at Suika

It's a rare weekend with no plans and little errands to run. My husband is volunteering at the church to put up the nativity scene and Christmas lights on the exterior of the church. Meanwhile, I decided to have breakfast at Trees and catch up on much-needed planning.

Since my hubby was not yet done and it was almost 3:00 PM, I decided to grab a late lunch at my favourite restaurant, Suika. It's my first time eating here alone, and I can't wait to enjoy my beloved dishes: karaage and katsu curry.

Are you able to enjoy a meal alone? Being comfortable with yourself and your own thoughts is liberating. Suika also has a Ghibli movie playing. Hihi.

Breakfast and Blogging at Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee

Happy, beautiful, sunny Saturday! My husband is volunteering at the church, so I decided to run errands and then have breakfast at Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee. I got their Ham & Cheese breakfast wrap and a small cup of mocha.

The breakfast wrap is well-seasoned.

I still have to write many posts because I didn't feel like writing or promoting this blog in October and November. I was lazy. However, writing inside a coffee shop (outside the house) helped!

Tamago Ramen and Aka Ramen from Maruhachi Ra-Men

It's a cold and rainy Friday evening. We waited an hour under the rain for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

I wanted a bowl of ramen for comfort. Jinya has a long line, so we decided to walk east along Robson Street for Maruhachi Ra-Men. It's our first time here, and I now understand why my brother loves this spot.

Cha-Shu Tamago Ramen from Maruhachi Ra-Men
Creamy chicken broth, soft-boiled egg (soy & pork based), extra pork shoulder chashu, aosa seaweed, green onion. Served with thin noodles.

My husband chose the Cha-Shu Tamago Ramen while I went for the spicy Aka Ramen. The broth is creamier than other ramen spots, yet it does not feel heavy.

Rich flavour with ground nuts & chili with creamy chicken broth, pork shoulder chashu, aosa seaweed, green onion, cilantro, bean sprout namuru, and lemon. Served with thin noodles.

We also got extra cha-shu for the Aka Ramen because why not? Meanwhile, the gyoza is standard.

I will be back for more ramen from this place. Although, I am now craving the chicken karaage from Ramen Gojiro.

Paella Mixta from Paella Guys

Hey! It's the first Friday of December, which means in Downtown Vancouver, the city is lighting up the most enormous Christmas Tree in Western Canada.

After the festivities under the rain, we decided to grab a Paella Mixta from the Paella Guys booth at the back of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

It's warm and rich against the cold rainy night. The chicken and shrimp topped the flavourful bomba rice. Yum!

The Devil's Burger from Devil's Elbow Ale & Smokehouse

Happy Thursday! For team lunch, the theme is burgers. My colleague suggested we walk to Devil's Elbow Ale & Smokehouse nearby. We ordered the Devil's Burger, and I was surprised by its quality. It's been a while since I have tried a gourmet burger.

The Devil's Burger from Devil's Elbow Ale & Smokehouse
In-house ground brisket patty, smoked mayo, tomato, lettuce, creole mustard, beer onions, smoked bacon, smoked cheddar, and brioche bun.

The burger starts with the in-house ground brisket patty, providing a rich, beefy, and juicy essence. The smoked mayo adds creamy and subtly smoky notes, while the freshness of tomatoes and the crispness of lettuce add a refreshing contrast. The creole mustard comes in for zesty spiciness, while the caramelized onions provide a sweet, bitter flavour. Lastly, the bacon adds a savoury and salty crunch complemented by the gooey luxury of smoked cheddar. Encasing everything is toasted and buttered brioche bun.

Trying more food from Vancouver Christmas Market 2023

The benefit of the Vancouver Christmas Market 2023 season pass is we can enter as many times as we want. This is our second time at the beautiful market this year. Of course, the goal is to try food items we have yet to try before.

I am using this menu I created as a checklist.

Thuringer Brat and Bavarian Smokie from Bratwurst Haus

Last year, we went for the Farmer Sausage from the Bratwurst Haus. Today, we gave the Thuringer Brat and Bavarian Smokie a try.

The Bavarian smokie is as classic as it will get in terms of bratwurst flavour-wise.

Finest cuts of pork, the most flavourful blend of spices, naturally smoked

Meanwhile, the Thuringer Brat is impressive. Surprisingly, it was so delicious, thanks to the garlic and marjoram. The latter adds a distinctive and slightly sweet flavour which complements the meaty richness.

Both sausage is generously topped with sauerkraut, adding that German flare. The distinctive sour taste is such a fantastic palate cleanser when you find the meaty sausage greasy.

Helmi's Potato & Cheddar Perogies

Every year, the pillowy perogies are available in the Vancouver Christmas Market. The only difference is the brand. This year Helmi's is the perogies brand. A serving comes with 6 pieces of perogies topped with savoury crumbled sausage, sour cream, grilled onions, and sauerkraut.

Traditional Plum Knedla

We discovered Knedla last year. It is a traditional Eastern European (mostly sweet) dumpling. When we got it in 2022, the conventional plum was already sold out, so it was our first time trying it this year.

Back to the roots with sweet plum flavour! We will fill our signature potato dough with locally sourced pitted plum, then coat it with our secret crumb coating,

I love the soft, doughy texture. However, I discovered that I am not a fan of plums.

What food will we try again next week when we visit the Vancouver Christmas Market? Any suggestions?

Festively Delicious Squarefooter Pizza from Boston Pizza

Happy Sunday! After Mass today, I decided that I wanted Boston Pizza. Honestly, I am head over heels in love with their Cactus Cuts Potatoes, and I enjoyed that. They also have a new Festively Delicious menu for the holiday season, and we got the New Loaded Pepperoni & Bacon Squarefooter Pizza and a slice of Chocolate Explosion.

Noodle Soup with Braised Beef from Lin Chinese Cuisine

Have you tried sleeping in so much that you woke up at 1:00 PM? It's the first time it happened to me, and our first proper meal of the day is from Lin Chinese Cuisine at 3:00 PM.

My husband ordered the Noodle Soup with Braised Beef. It reminds me of the beef noodle soup from RedBeef. It's comforting and so reasonably priced!

Noodle Soup with Braised Beef from Lin Chinese Cuisine

Meanwhile, I ordered my usual Tan Tan Noodle Soup with Minced Meat, Xiao Long Bao (Shanghai Juicy Pork Dumplings), and Pan Fried Pork Buns.

The tan tan noodle soup has a rich and savoury base covering tender hand-pulled noodles.

Then, the Xiao Long Bao has a delicate, thin skin encasing a flavourful broth and juicy pork. It's culinary magic!

On the other hand, the pan-fried pork buns have a golden-brown exterior cradling the succulent pork filling.

I miss Lin. It's now more than a year since we last enjoyed their food, and this is long overdue. The prices are still great, and the food is still comforting.

'Tis the season to treat our taste buds with the joyous flavours of the holidays, and Tim Hortons has brought two delightful creations to elevate our festive spirits. Mixed Chicken and Falafel Plate from Albasha Express

Happy Thursday! It's team lunch, and the theme for this week is Middle Eastern.

They say the third time is the charm, and it is true in this case. The first restaurant we tried to order cancelled. The second one never confirmed our order, so I ordered the next available restaurant in DoorDash: Albasha Express Shawarma & Falafel.

Mixed Chicken and Falafel Plate from Albasha Express

We ordered their mixed chicken and falafel plate, which is a lot of delicious food in one packed container. Crispy falafel is an excellent accompaniment to the succulent tender chicken. Everything is delicious. I am reminded why a former colleague loved this place.

Baileys Flavoured Boston Cream Dream Donut from Tim Hortons

Tim Hortons just released a Non-Alcoholic Baileys Flavoured Boston Cream Donut.

The donut has chocolate shavings on top in the colour of the classic drink. The Boston Cream donut's traditional creamy custard fillings are enhanced with the essence of Baileys, which means a velvety and smooth texture in contrast to the soft and pillowy donut.

Baileys Latte and Baileys Flavoured Boston Cream Dream Donut from Tim Hortons

Combining these elements would result in a donut that's not just a sweet treat but a luxurious experience. The familiar comfort of a Boston Cream donut would be elevated by adding the Baileys-inspired twist, making it a tempting choice for those who enjoy the iconic flavour without the alcohol content.

A peek inside Baileys-infused cream from Tim Hortons

I happily enjoyed the donut with Bailey's Latte. Have you tried the Bailey's Flavoured product line from Tims? What do you think?
