Elk Steak from Salmon n' Bannock | Canada Day 2023

We're starting our Canada Day long weekend, celebrating my last day at the job, and starting a new one with dinner at Salmon n' Bannock. I arrived from South Surrey early since my employers allowed me to leave early on my last day.

I ordered the Mushroom Vegetarian Risotto with the soup and dessert add-on, while hubby went with the Elk Steak.

The first thing to arrive is the Bison Soup. What does it taste like? Beefier beef would be my description. There's gaminess and a slight sweetness to the meat itself while the soup is seasoned perfectly. It's like a comforting hug which I need after a long commute.

Then, they served two warm bannocks with butter. It is a hearty and heavy bread. It is dense and slightly crumbly, with a perfect golden-brown crust on the outside and a soft, moist interior. I love it.

After finishing my soup came both our mains. Hubby ordered a medium rare elk steak, and it is gamey with such a distinct taste. I dipped it in the gravy, and the gaminess became more profound. It is perfect with the mashed potato. It helped balanced and tone down the gaminess. It is chewier and more tender than beef.

My Mushroom Vegetarian Risotto with Anishinaabe wild rice is perfect. It is creamy and velvety, but the Anishinaabe wild rice adds a slightly chewy texture, an ideal contrast to the creaminess of the risotto. Meanwhile, the mushroom provides a meatier and tender texture. The combination of these ingredients creates a satisfying and comforting eating experience.

For our dessert, we enjoyed a Sweetgrass Cherries + Cream Trifle. It was sweet and light, quite the opposite of everything we've had today. The cherries provide a natural sweetness, while the creamy custard adds a smooth flavour. Of course, I love the crumbly layer of cake absorbing everything.

After our fantastic experience, we received our bill. In other restaurants, you might get mint chocolate or a fortune cookie. For today, we received two freezies.

Tim Hortons Dream Cookie with M&M'S® Minis

I am working at South Surrey this week, meaning a long commute. I feel exhausted when I exit the Broadway City Hall Station, so today, we stopped by Tim Hortons primarily to see if they have any Dream Cookies in stock.

Tim Hortons Dream Cookie with M&M'S® Minis

They have an abundance of the Rocky Road Dream Cookie, none of the Reese's® Mini Dream Cookie, and one last Dream Cookie with M&M'S® Minis we got. It's sweet! The cookie reminds me of butterscotch in sweetness and texture. It is topped with M&M'S Minis, which is also sweet, but it did provide a crunch we know and adore with M&M'S.

Barbacoa and Totopos from Zapoteca Mexican Grill and Seafood

When a Mexican acquaintance says that Zapoteca Mexican Grill and Seafood is the most authentic Mexican restaurant in South Surrey, you believe her.

I am working in South Surrey this week to train my replacement (I am leaving my current job). Since I am rarely on this side of Metro Vancouver, I sent a message to a former colleague, and we scheduled to have dinner this evening.

We arrived at Zapoteca Mexican Grill and Seafood and got the last table on their patio that was not reserved. It's definitely different from the Tex-Mex (Americanized Mexican) food you see at most of the places in Metro Vancouver. I don't recognize most dish names except for the one I ordered, which is the Barbacoa, while my friend chose Totopos for us to share.

Totopos from Zapoteca Mexican Grill and Seafood
Fresh made guacamole, pumpkin seeds, feta cheese, pico de Gallo, house made corn chips

The house-made corn chips are amazing. It's obviously fried and made in the restaurant. I've only seen one other restaurant that makes their corn chips fresh in-store: The Mexican Antojitos y Cantina in Downtown Vancouver. It's served with fresh pico de gallo and creamy guacamole.

Barbacoa felt the safest option because it's something I have heard previously. It was served in a stone mortar with banana leaves at the bottom. It is accompanied by cilantro, onions, habanero sauce, and corn tortillas.

Slow braised beef sirloin and pork shoulder with beer and dried chiles, served in a stone mortar with banana leaves, cilantro, onions, habanero sauce, and corn tortillas.

The meat is so tender and quickly falls apart. I took a corn tortilla and used it as a base for building a Barbacoa taco. In one taco, I ate it with just meat. I added a habanero sauce making a spicy taco on the next one. Then, I tried one with onions. Lastly, a mix of everything. I never knew eating tacos could be this fun and amusing - each taco is so different.

Sweet Chili Dip and Cajun Dip for Chicken McNuggets from McDonald's

Since trying the McDonald's® Ghost Pepper Sauce, I do my best to try new Chicken McNuggets dip. They recently released two sauces: the Sweet Chili and the Cajun.

10 Chicken McNuggets with Sweet Chili Sauce and Cajun Sauce from McDonald's

Sweet Chili Sauce from McDonald's

It's the spicier of the two dips. It hits you with the tangy kick of heat, then tones it down with sweetness. The McDonald's sauce has a smooth and slightly thick consistency.

Sweet Chili Sauce from McDonald's

Cajun Sauce from McDonald's®

Because I tried the Sweet Chili Sauce first, I didn't get any spiciness from the McDonald's Cajun Sauce. However, it's definitely more creamy in texture, and the flavour is more savoury and smoky.

Cajun Sauce from McDonald's

Both sauces are enjoyable. I prefer the Sweet Chili for the McNuggets and the Cajun Sauce for the fries.

Caramel Popcorn McFlurry from McDonald’s®

Have you had stale popcorn? You know the one I'm talking about! It's when the popcorn is softer and chewier instead of crispy. That's how the Caramel Popcorn in the McDonald’s® McFlurry feels like.

Caramel Popcorn McFlurry from McDonald’s®

Caramel Popcorn McFlurry is the special dessert from McDonald’s® this summer. While the popcorn flavour is there, the context is just really off.

Can we please have peanut McFlurry instead? Or maybe even peanut butter? Or even pretzels?

Food Adventure at Greek Day on Broadway 2023

Happy Sunday! My husband ran the Vancouver Half Marathon this morning, and after resting a bit at home, we headed to the fun on Greek Day on Broadway. It was as hot as last year, and we ate the same delicious food we enjoyed in 2022.

Greek Sausages from Camp Metamorphosis BC

We started walking the stretch of West Broadway from Macdonald Street, and the first not-for-profit food booth we spotted was Camp Metamorphosis British Columbia which supports Greek youth. They're selling Authentic Greek Sausages.

I'm famished! The sausage is perfectly cooked with a snappy skin and juicy interior, but I absolutely love the warmed pita with tzatziki and feta cheese. It's perfect!

With pita, tzatziki, feta, and roasted pepper

Pork Souvlaki from the Greek Orthodox Community of Surrey & the Fraser Valley

We loved the Pork Souvlaki last year and got it again this year. The bread they serve it with is so soft. Yum!

Loukoumades from Hellenic Canadian Senior's Society of Metropolitan Vancouver

I am so happy! It took a year, but we finally tried loukoumades from the Hellenic Canadian Senior's Society. We failed to order from them last year, so getting the traditional Greek doughnut to support the seniors is our priority this year.

Loukoumades is a delicious traditional Greek doughnut drenched in Sweet Honey Syrup & topped with cinnamon and sesame seeds.

Lamb Chops from the Cretan Association

We ordered a 1/4 kg lamb chop combo from the Cretan Association last year and got it again this year. The lamb chops have a beautifully caramelized exterior while remaining tender and juicy on the inside. We ate it near where they were grilling the meat, and it smelled amazing. The high heat from grilling helped seal the natural juices from the lamb, resulting in a mouthwatering bite each time. It was served with fries, pita, and tzatziki sauce. Dip everything in that tzatziki!

A quarter kilo of lamb chop combo served with fries, tzatziki, and pita bread.

My husband also spotted my brother enjoying loukoumades, so seeing and briefly catching up with him at Greek Day on Broadway 2023 was a pleasant surprise.

After enjoying our lamb chops, we walked the rest of Broadway that's closed off to see if there were still any non-profit food booths, and we couldn't find any, so we decided to go home. The heat, walking around, and being unable to sit started getting to me, so we took the bus home.

Chicken Tikka Masala from HelloFresh

For dinner, hubby and I prepared the Chicken Tikka Masala with Carrots and Garlic Rice from our HelloFresh box. It's the last HelloFresh meal for a while until I figure out the schedule for my new work.

Chicken Tikka Masala with Carrots and Garlic Rice

HelloFresh Description

"Bold tikka masala and cream coat tender chicken and sweet carrots in this quick and easy curry! The aromas will make you want to dig in before this hits the table."

Bold tikka masala and cream coat tender chicken and sweet carrots in this quick and easy curry! The aromas will make you want to dig in before this hits the table.

The chicken was tender and marinated in flavourful tikka sauce and curry paste. Meanwhile, adding carrots provides a texture contrast offering a slight crunch, while the spinach adds a pop of freshness and colour to the dish.

Rocky Road Dream Cookie from Tim Hortons

Tim Hortons recently announced a Dream Cookie lineup that includes the Rocky Road Dream Cookie. I am used to the dream donut and always keep an eye out for it, but the dream cookie is a pleasant change for the fast food chain.

Rocky Road Dream Cookie™
A rich chocolate cookie stuffed with pecans and marshmallows.

We went to our favourite Tims location, and only the Rocky Road Dream Donut was in stock. It has everything you expect and loves from rocky road flavour ice cream: marshmallows, chopped nuts, and chocolate chips. It's a pleasant surprise that the cookie is moist. I enjoyed it.

Hopefully, the other two dream cookie will be available tomorrow and is as good as this one.

Chicken and Fish Katsu from Tokyo Katsu-Sand Food Truck

Hubby and I travelled to Burnaby to see the festivities at Pinoy Festival.

Pinoy Festival 2023 at Burnaby

There were a lot of booths for Filipino merchandise, Filipino realtors, immigration consultants, and different groups and societies. Unfortunately, there were only four food vendors (not counting Macao Imperial Tea), and they're set up side-by-side. The line is crazy for each one, and they're on top of each other. It's hard to know which line goes to which vendor.

That's why we opted for the food truck Tokyo Katsu-Sand even though the Filipino Pork BBQ skewers smell so good. 🤤

We ordered the Chicken-Katsu and Fish-Katsu. Both are delicious, but the fish is definitely better. Because the bread is perfectly toasted and crispy, the delicate meat of the fish provides such a soft contrast.

Deep-fried chicken cutlet, shredded cabbage, homemade chicken-katsu sauce, and mustard-mixed mayonnaise

I'll go for the fish again next time. Or maybe the Ebi will be back, and we can try it too.

Deep-fried black code cutlet, shredded cabbage, homemade tartar sauce, and homemade fish-katsu sauce

The Pinoy Fiesta was fun, but I prefer the Proudly Philippines Food and Travel Fair just because there are more food options. 😁 Hubby suggested that each Filipino society could sell its own product or partner with a food vendor for one (imagine buying Bicol Express or Pili Nuts from the Bicol Association).

I'm still deciding whether to travel to Surrey for Extravaganza; we'll see what our schedule is like then. 😁

Gelato from Maya's at White Rock, BC

After a wonderful dinner at Charlie Don't Surf, we walked to Maya's for gelato. They offer gelato, ice cream, and soft serve. Hubby wants the healthier gelato while I want soft serve.

Tiramisu Gelato from Maya's
A hint of mascarpone cheese, sweet marsala wine, and a hint of coffee.

Unfortunately, their soft serve machine isn't working. I opted for my usual gelato flavour: Hazelnut. My husband went for the Tiramisu.

Hazelnut Gelato from Maya's

It's nice to eat something cold while the sun is shining so brightly outside. No wonder there's half a dozen (maybe even more!) ice cream shop along the White Rock Boardwalk.

Surfer Burger and Fish & Chips from Charlie Don't Surf | White Rock, BC

Happy, beautiful Friday! It's my penultimate Friday at work, and I decided to bring all my equipment back to my boss's home in South Surrey. Afterwards, my parents, I, and my husband decided to enjoy the sun and have dinner near the White Rock Pier. I chose Charlie Don't Surf for dinner.

I went for the Surfer Burger with fries. It has been a while since I last had good salmon, and this is definitely fresh wild-caught salmon. It's the right pink colour and has that distinct, slightly sweet flavour and a delicate melt-in-your-mouth texture. Yum! Meanwhile, the lettuce is crispy and the tomato is juicy. Then, the pickle adds a slightly sour note that helps cut through the richness of the salmon. I also love the subtle sharpness and pungency of the onions.

My husband went for their Wild Pacific Cod Fish and Chips. I think the kitchen waited for the other dishes before releasing the fish and chips because the batter coating was soggy when it arrived at our table. The cod is still tender which is good. The tartar sauce is pretty acceptable too.

My mom ordered the Bubba Shrimp Pizza. They didn't skimp on the shrimp,   which I absolutely love. It has a subtle sweetness and brininess to the pizza and pairs well with the vibrant pesto. However, my first bite is overwhelmed by the creamy and tangy feta cheese. I love how everything goes well together.

My dad ordered the 3 Cheese Pesto Penne, which I couldn't try. Of the three dishes we had today, I highly recommend the Bubba Shrimp Pizza.

Thai-Style Turkey 'Pad Krapow' with Snow Peas from HelloFresh

It's Turkey Thursday! We had turkey for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This evening, we prepared the Thai-Style Turkey 'Pad Krapow' with Snow Peas from our HelloFresh box.

Thai-Style Turkey 'Pad Krapow' with Snow Peas

HelloFresh Description:

"Pad krapow is a popular dish in the Thai street food scene. In our version, ground turkey is stir-fried with aromatic ingredients such as ginger, garlic, lime and chili pepper, then served over fluffy rice."

Thai-Style Turkey 'Pad Krapow' with Snow Peas

Thai cuisine is renowned for its complex and bold flavours, and this dish is no exception. The combination of ground turkey, fragrant ginger, and the distinct tanginess of lime creates a symphony that dances on your palate. The richness of hoisin sauce and soy sauce adds depth and a touch of umami, while the subtle sweetness of brown sugar balances the overall flavour profile. The chili pepper brings the right amount of heat to awaken your taste buds without overpowering the dish.

Thai-Style Turkey 'Pad Krapow' with Snow Peas

The use of soy sauce and fish sauce reminded me of Filipino cuisine. We use the same set of ingredients as our Southeast Asian neighbour, but the result is quite different.

Sweet Ginger Pork Stir-Fry from HelloFresh

Today, I learned a painful lesson about thoroughly washing my hands after touching red chili pepper. We prepared the Sweet Ginger Pork Stir-Fry with Peppers and Snow Peas from our HelloFresh box for dinner.

After cooking everything, I washed my hands, placed the food on the plate, and as we took our first bite, I felt a burning sensation in my right eye. It burns! I probably touched my eye without thinking, and whatever spicy extracts from the red chili pepper were still there. I rewashed my hands and washed my eyes with water. Afterwards, I placed a cold compress over my right eye. The sting was gone after about 5 minutes.

Anyway, time to discuss the food.

Sweet Ginger Pork Stir-Fry with Peppers and Snow Peas

HelloFresh Description:

"Ah, ginger and pork – the two go together like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. This lip-smacking pair will be swinging across your tastebuds tonight on a bed of pillowy jasmine rice and topped with a tasty hoisin-soy sauce. This dinner is sure to have you dancing!"

Sweet Ginger Pork Stir--Fry with Peppers and Snow Peas

First, I overcooked the rice, which was sticky instead of fluffy. It still did a fantastic job of soaking the umami-packed hoisin sauce and salty soy sauce. Judging by the smell alone, I thought the dish would be too salty, but the combination of ginger, garlic, and sesame oil balanced everything.

The tender-crispy snow peas and sweet bell peppers changed texture with their crunch. For a mildly spicy kick, the red chili pepper was terrific.

This is a delicious dish. I love it!

Beef and Bean Chili from HelloFresh

Happy first day of summer! Surprisingly, it's 14°C and cold. To help us warm up, hubby and I prepared the Beef and Bean Chili with Sour Cream and Cheddar from our HelloFresh box for lunch today.

Beef and Bean Chili with Sour Cream and Cheddar

HelloFresh Description:

"Good chili has well-seasoned meat, creamy beans and tender vegetables. Great chili, however, has all that and comes together in one pot in under an hour. This chili is one of the greats. And once you take a bite, we can guarantee you’ll agree!"

Beef and Bean Chili with Sour Cream and Cheddar

The ground beef provides rich and savoury flavour while the sweet bell pepper and green onion adds layers of subtle sweetness and a light crunch enhancing the texture of the dish. However, the real start of the show are the kidney beans. It's creamy and earthy that adds a velvety texture that pairs well with the beef.

To finish the dish, a dollop of sour cream is added, providing a cool and creamy contrast while the melted cheddar cheese on top adds a gooey texture.

I'll miss cooking lunch once I go back to the office and become an employee on a hybrid schedule.

Chipotle-Honey Turkey Bowl with Green Onion Rice from HelloFresh

Happy Tuesday! I prepared the Cal Smart Chipotle-Honey Turkey Bowls with Green Onion Rice from our HelloFresh box for dinner today.

Cal Smart Chipotle-Honey Turkey Bowls with Green Onion Rice

HelloFresh Description:

"This hearty turkey bowl is full of wholesome goodness! We even snuck some spinach into the turkey mix for an added veggie boost. Pickled cucumbers and a sweet and spicy chipotle-honey sauce brighten each bite."

Cal Smart Chipotle-Honey Turkey Bowls with Green Onion Rice

Yummy! The basmati rice is the perfect fluffy and aromatic base for the dish, and adding thinly sliced green onions adds a subtle onion flavour and a fresh element. Meanwhile, the turkey is coated with chipotle-honey sauce and enchilada spice blend for a smoky, sweet, and savoury flavour. The bowl is topped with pickled cucumber to balance everything and provide acidity.

Meatless Monday: Tofu Bowls with Soba Noodles and Veggies from HelloFresh

Meatless Monday is possible with HelloFresh. I prepared the Carb Smart Tofu Bowls with Soba Noodles and Veggies for dinner from our HelloFresh box, which arrived this morning.

Below is the rest of our meatless Monday menu:

Carb Smart Tofu Bowls with Soba Noodles and Veggies

HelloFresh Description:

"This easy lower, carb vegetarian meal is filled with protein-packed tofu, wholesome veggies and swirls of soba noodles."

Carb Smart Tofu Bowls with Soba Noodles and Veggies

I love how the umami of the soy sauce mirin blend clings to the silky and smooth soba noodles. It's perfect! It was my first time frying tofu which maintained its delicate firm consistency but was a bit crispy on the outside. The edamame adds a slight crunch, while the Shanghai bok choy provides a mild bitterness.

Carb Smart Tofu Bowls with Soba Noodles and Veggies

On top of everything, I drizzled chili-garlic sauce, adding a sticky element coating the ingredients. Meanwhile, the sprinkling of green onions provided freshness to the dish.

Croissant and Mocha from Elysian Coffee on Broadway

I am writing this post in Elysian Coffee on their Broadway Corner Ash location using my laptop which is a first. We decided to hang out here for a couple of hours for a change in scenery. It's also our first time trying their pastries and drinks.

Writing on my blog with my laptop at Elysian Coffee at their Broadway and Ash location

My mocha is more coffee than hot chocolate, and something tells me I won't be able to sleep right away tonight because it's stronger than I'm used to. The croissant is delicious. I wished I was asked if I wanted it warmed because it'll be mouthwatering.

A Butter Croissant from Elysian Coffee

A cup of Mocha from Elysian Coffee

Cappuccino from Elysian Coffee

Elysian Coffee on Broadway is busy and quite noisy. It's not conducive for working. They don't offer wifi, and I didn't see any socket for charging devices. Although, it's a great spot for grabbing coffee and a quick lunch. The location is excellent since it's a block from the Canada Line Broadway-City Hall Station.

Filipino Food from Lasa Street Food in Seattle Premium Outlets

After a long day in Seattle and before heading back to our beloved Canada, we window-shopped at Seattle Premium Outlets. I was hoping to get a backpack I can use daily for work since, starting next month, I'll return to working in an office for at least 3 days weekly.

LASA Street Food in Seattle Premium Outlets, Tulalip Washington

On the south edge of the outlet store, there's a stall called Lasa Street Food. I was pleasantly shocked to see a Filipino store in the middle of an outlet store in Tulalip, Washington.

I ordered Kwek-Kwek (deep-fried battered quail eggs) and Squid Balls (deep-fried squid balls), which are popular street food items in the Philippines. They're both worth it!

Halo-Halo and so much more from Chowking in Seattle, WA

My siblings and I are so giddy and excited to eat at Chowking again after four years. Although, I don't remember eating here in 2019 during our wedding vacation in the Philippines.

Anyway, I ordered a 1-entrée Lauriat with Chinese BBQ Pork as requested by my husband. While I got a 2-entrée Lauriat with 2 pieces of Chinese-style fried chicken and Lumpiang Shanghai. The Lauriat comes with steamed rice, Pancit Canton, and a 1-piece Buchi (a golden brown gelatinous dough ball coated with sesame seeds and filled with sweetened red bean paste). I also ordered a 4-piece siomai and halo-halo.

2-piece Chinese-style Fried Chicken + Lumpiang Shanghai Lauriat
2-piece Chinese-style Fried Chicken, 5-piece Lumpiang Shanghai, steamed rice, half-serving of Pancit Canton,  and 1-piece Buchi

Let's start with the neutral. The experience feels like being in the Philippines. The crowd - there's a long line both in Jollibee and Chowking - is available just as you would experience back in Manila. Sticky and dirty floors are also present. "Ah. Just like back home."

Chinese BBQ Pork Lauriat
Chinese BBQ Pork served with steamed rice, half-serving of Pancit Canton, and 1-piece Buchi.

The good - the Pancit Canton, Buchi, fried chicken, and Lumpiang Shanghai tastes like the one in the Philippines.

4-piece Siomai
4 pieces steamed open-faced dim sum made of savoury pork filling in a special flour-based yellow wrapper

The bad - that Chinese BBQ Pork is a weird mess. It's bad. Don't order it. While the siomai tasted different. My younger sister agreed that it's unlike what we remember from the Philippines. It's possible that we've had better dumplings; that's why our expectations are higher.

Sweet shaved ice dessert topped with a mixture of sweetened preserved fruit and beans, ube jam, tapioca pearl, caramel flan, and ube ice cream.

Lastly, the halo-halo is disappointing. It has the usual shaved ice, a spoonful of leche flan (caramel custard), a scoop of ube ice cream, and evaporated milk. However, there's barely any of the sweetened beans or jelly. There needs to be something more inside to be worth the USD 6.00. I guess this is the fast food halo-halo experience. If you're trying halo-halo for the first time, go elsewhere.
