Kumare Express Vancouver Review: Authentic Filipino Breakfast in Joyce-Collingwood

Happy Sunday morning! Right after finishing 9:30 AM Mass at St. Mary's in Joyce-Collingwood, hubby and I walked over to Kumare Express to kick off our day with a cozy Filipino breakfast. You’ll find a classic turo-turo steam-table counter inside, but the kitchen crew cooks all the breakfast plates fresh to order.

Before long, the server brought out our full spread: two runny sunny-side-up eggs per plate, heaps of fragrant garlic sinangag rice, and steaming mugs alongside packets of instant Kopiko Blanca coffee.

Crispy Bangusilog, Tender Tapsilog & Smoky Skewers

I treated myself to a plate of hearty bangusilog ($17.95), while hubby went with the classic tapsilog ($17.95). Naturally, I couldn't resist ordering a pair of sweet pork BBQ skewers to share!

Hubby's beef tapa packed that perfect punch of sweet and savoury goodness. The kitchen sliced the meat into tender bite-sized pieces without a single tough chunk in sight. I usually skip tapsilog because so many places serve dry or chewy beef, but Kumare Express nails it.

My crispy boneless bangus stole the show. I fry frozen marinated milkfish at home all the time, but mine never tastes like this! They soak the fish in a wonderfully tangy, sour citrus marinade that immediately takes me back to the authentic milkfish we love from Pangasinan. They fried the skin to a loud, golden crunch while keeping the fish inside juicy and tender.

The grilled pork BBQ skewers hit you with a sweet marinade and fantastic smoky char. If I had to pick one tiny detail, the skewers lean mostly on extra-lean pork; I missed those soft, juicy fatty bits that give street-style skewers their signature magic!
