Mamalee Malaysian Delights Chinatown: Hainanese Chicken Rice & Roti Canai Review

After work today, my colleagues and I decided to hit the gym in the basement of our office building for some group workout. It's so much fun and incredibly motivating to work towards health goals with the ladies. (Is that post-workout glow a real thing? Because I felt it! lol.) Riding that endorphin high, hubby and I headed to Mamalee Malaysian Delights in Chinatown to grab dinner.

Mamalee Malaysian Delights, Chinatown

Location: 186 Keefer Pl, Vancouver, BC V6B 6L4 (Chinatown)

Featured Items: Hainanese Chicken Rice + Soup (large), Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai

Price Range: Hainanese Chicken Rice $20, Nasi Lemak $18.50, Roti Canai $9.95

Verdict: Comforting Malaysian classics with tender chicken and satisfying roti. A solid neighbourhood spot when the craving hits.

Still beaming from the workout, I asked Gemini to tell me the lowest-calorie option from the menu, and it spit out Hainanese Chicken Rice + Soup. So I ordered the large portion ($20). I gave half of the chicken to hubby, who got the Nasi Lemak ($18.50) with its abundance of fragrant rice, a perfectly cooked egg, generous peanuts, crisp cucumber, and salty anchovies. I didn't finish my rice because #weightgoal, but that chicken is so tender, so soft, and absolutely perfect.

Of course, I am weak (or maybe just honest about what I want) and still ordered the flaky roti canai ($9.95) because I need curry in my life. And let's be real, flaky roti is always good. The dip from John 3:16 Malaysian is still creamier and takes the crown as my favourite, but Mamalee's is a close, convenient nearby option when that roti craving suddenly hits.

Mamalee Malaysian Delights is a solid neighbourhood spot for when you want authentic Malaysian comfort food. The Hainanese chicken is tender and the portion is generous. Whether you're being mindful (like I tried to be) or going all in with the roti, there's something here for you. Sometimes you earn a little indulgence, right?
