The Boss Bakery at Crystal Mall: Pineapple Buns & Sugar-Free Treats in Metrotown

Hubby and I were running errands at Real Canadian Superstore in the Metrotown area when we decided to finally tackle Crystal Mall's maze-like layout. After documenting every food option we could find (spoiler: it's a lot!), we needed to refuel. The circular layout with all those indoor and outdoor entrances had us wandering like mad, but it was worth it to discover this charming neighbourhood bakery tucked inside.

Verdict: Lovely neighbourhood bakery gem with soft, quality baked goods and unique flavour combinations.

Our First Time at The Boss Bakery

I spotted their fluffy golden items in the display case and couldn't resist. I picked up a rich, creamy zero-calorie low-sugar sponge cake ($2.65), and hubby grabbed an indulgent pineapple bun with sweet taro paste ($2.95). Sometimes the simplest pastries are the most satisfying.

Flaky pineapple bun with taro paste and soft zero-calorie sponge cake from The Boss Bakery
Left: Sweet, crusty pineapple bun with earthy taro paste.
Right: Pillowy sponge cake with zero sweetness.

I spotted their fluffy golden items in the display case and grabbed a zero-calorie low-sugar sponge cake ($2.65), while hubby picked up the oh so perfect pineapple bun with sweet taro paste ($2.95). The pineapple bun is absolutely awesome, so sweet and crusty on the outside while the earthy sweet taro paste inside is just perfect. So good! My sponge cake is incredibly soft and moist, though I have to admit there's barely any sweetness to it at all, which kind of works if you're not craving sugar.

I was also delighted to discover The Boss Bakery has another location in Chinatown, so close to home. Kam Do Bakery in Richmond still holds a special place in my heart as my favourite Asian bakery.

If you're navigating Crystal Mall's circular layout and need a little pick-me-up, The Boss Bakery is worth checking out. Whether you're treating yourself or grabbing something for your sweetie, you won't leave disappointed.
