Il Gran Panino
Location: 118 Queen St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia
Featured Items: Prosciutto Sandwich ($18 AUD)
Note: Ordered for a company-paid team lunch with a sandwich theme. Prices are in AUD.
Verdict: Decent prosciutto, but the bread was not as fresh as I hoped and the sauce and onion flavour were off for me. Vancouver wins this round.
Happy Thursday! For our company-paid team lunch, the theme was sandwiches, and we ordered from Il Gran Panino on Queen Street.
Prosciutto Sandwich ($18)
To properly compare it with what we get back home in Vancouver, I ordered the prosciutto sandwich ($18). I'm sorry, Melbourne. I hope this is not your best Italian sandwich spot, because Vancouver wins this round with Pressato and Dante (you can read that showdown in Vancouver Italian Sandwich Battle: Pressato vs Dante on Robson).
The soft focaccia did not seem as fresh as I would have liked, and the sauce was unusual. According to the description, it comes with basil, but I could not taste any basil at all. I think there was a roast potato cream (?) in there, and I suspect the sweet caramelised onion is what tasted off. I love savoury sweet things, but this combination felt absolutely off to me. Inside, the salty, thinly sliced prosciutto, peppery arugula and juicy tomato slices were fine, but the whole sandwich did not come together. It is a bit sad, but I never complain about free food.

Final Thoughts
Il Gran Panino was not my favourite, but a team lunch is always about the company, and I enjoyed that part. If you are in the CBD and craving an Italian sandwich, I would try a different filling next time. Prices are in AUD.
Where is your favourite Italian sandwich spot in Melbourne, or in your city? Tell me in the comments, because I would love to try a better one before we fly home!
