Verdict: The butter croissant is the best I have ever tried, and the Kouign Amann is amazing. The Vegemite scroll was my least favourite.

Happy Tuesday! It is a public holiday in Victoria for Melbourne Cup, so we woke up later than usual and decided to walk to Lune Croissanterie. Our tour guide yesterday called it the best croissant in the world. Bold claim!

He also mentioned that the founder, Kate Reid, used to be a rocket scientist, so the same discipline has been applied to croissants. To be precise, she is a former aeronautical engineer who worked for the Williams Racing Formula 1 team before training as a baker, which is close enough for me.

Butter Croissant ($7.80)

We got a traditional butter croissant for $7.80, and it is exceptional. It is exactly what you expect: flaky, buttery and light. What makes it stand out for me is that my first two bites did not make the rest of the crust fall onto the plate. It is shatteringly flaky, yet the layers stay on the croissant. That is mind-blowing and unexpected. I have no idea if it is the best in the world, but it is better than anything I have tried.

Cheese & Vegemite Scroll ($10.90)

We also got a cheese and Vegemite scroll for $10.90. The salty Vegemite flavour is strong but not too bad, and the toasted cheese on top is a nice touch. The scroll is not as flaky as I expected. Sorry, but a colleague's version that I tried is better: more buttery and more delicious.

Flat White and Mocha ($5.90 each)

We also had a standard flat white and a rich mocha, each $5.90. Both came in lovely handmade-looking ceramic mugs, with a pretty heart pattern on the mocha.

Kouign Amann ($10.50)

We enjoyed our food so much that we lined up again for the Kouign Amann ($10.50). Okay, this is amazing. The texture is great: caramelized, sticky and sweet on the outside, with a soft, buttery interior as you peel through each layer.

Final Thoughts

I cannot say if Lune makes the best croissant in the world, but the butter croissant is the best I have ever had, and the Kouign Amann is worth the second trip through the line. Skip the Vegemite scroll unless you love the flavour. Prices are in AUD.
