Verdict: A good meal, but the curry sauce was too sweet for me. The katsu and chicken karaage on the Deluxe Omurice were the highlights.

For our last dinner in Melbourne on this trip, I really needed rice and my pre-flight meal of Japanese curry. Since it was a public holiday, it was difficult to know which stores were open and which were closed. As a last resort, we went to Tokyo Motto for their curry omurice.

Deluxe Omurice ($24.50)

Hubby went for the Deluxe Omurice ($24.50). It is rice covered with a fluffy, silky omelette, swimming in rich curry sauce and topped with crispy prawn katsu, sweet sukiyaki beef and crunchy chicken karaage. The katsu and karaage were perfect, with a juicy interior and a crispy exterior. The sukiyaki beef is expectedly sweet, but a bit too much for my liking.

Katsu Omurice ($19)

I went for the Katsu Omurice ($19). Unfortunately, the savoury curry sauce was a bit too sweet for my liking. The sliced katsu is crispy on the outside but dry on the inside.

Takoyaki ($10.40)

I also got some sides to share. The hot, golden takoyaki ($10.40) is topped with creamy Japanese mayo, sweet-savoury sauce and dancing bonito flakes. It tasted as expected.

Veggie Tempura ($12.35)

The crunchy veggie tempura ($12.35) was so different from anything I have tried. The batter is not the usual airy, crisp tempura batter I know and usually get in Vancouver. It came with lotus root, green beans and other veggies, plus a savoury dipping sauce.

Final Thoughts

It was a good meal, and a lifesaver on a public holiday, but I cannot wait to go back home to Mr. Japanese Curry. Prices are in AUD.
