A Savoury Spin on Pi Day

Every March 14th, we make it a point to go out for pie. While we usually head somewhere for a sweet slice, we decided to change things up this year. We headed to Peaked Pies on W Broadway for our first savoury Pi Day, and it turned out to be a great way to spend a Saturday.

A lot of people come here to "peak" their pies with mashed potatoes and peas, but we decided to skip the toppings this time. To me, adding all that mash makes the dish feel more British than Aussie. By keeping it simple, we were able to focus on the golden, flaky pastry instead.

Since St. Patrick’s Day is next week, Hubby went with the Steak and Guinness. I took a bite and was surprised by how strong the Guinness was. Even though he couldn’t taste much of the malt, the filling was a perfect balance once you got a bit of the crust in the mix. We both noticed right away that the steak they use, which the menu says is AA Alberta chunky steak, is incredible.

I decided to try the Steak Bacon Cheese since it was next on their menu. I’ve had their Traditional Aussie pie before, and this one is much cheesier and has a nice saltiness from the bacon. Because the beef was so high quality, we even grabbed a frozen "Hopper" (kangaroo) pie to take home for later this week.

To finish the meal, we shared some Anzac biscuits. I actually have the packaged version at my office that my Australian colleagues sent over, but these fresh ones are a completely different experience. The coconut flavour is much stronger and more fragrant than the ones from the box. I’m still a little sad I didn't grab a Lamington too, but that just gives us a reason to visit again soon.

Peaked Pies FAQ

Does Peaked Pies serve breakfast?
Yes! They serve breakfast pies until 11:00 am. Options include the Ned Kelly (ground beef, gravy, bacon, and egg) and the Rise + Shine (scrambled egg, bacon, and potato). These are priced at $9.00.

What should I order if it's my first time? (Smooch Food Picks)
If you want the full Australian experience, here is what we recommend:

  • The Hopper: If it’s available, get it! Kangaroo is a lean, unique protein you won't find many other places in Vancouver.
  • Traditional Aussie: You can't go wrong with the classic ground beef and gravy.
  • The Sweets: To keep it authentic, go for the Lamington or the Anzac biscuits. They are as Aussie as it gets and pair perfectly with coffee or tea.

Do they serve coffee and tea?
They have a full coffee and tea menu. You can get everything from a Flat White ($4.75) and Latte ($5.25) to a London Fog ($5.00) or a Chai Latte ($5.25). They also offer milk alternatives like almond, soy, and oat.

What sweets pair well with their coffee?
If you aren't in the mood for a full pie, they have several "indulgence" items that are perfect with a Flat White or a Long Black:

  • Vanilla Slice ($5.25): Vienna cream custard layered between puff pastry and topped with raspberry buttercream icing.
  • Salted Chocolate Caramel Tart ($5.00): Sweet shortcrust filled with dulce de leche and topped with rock salt and chocolate shavings.
  • Carrot Lava Cake ($6.00): Classic carrot cake filled with lava cream cheese icing (best served warm!).
  • Lemon Meringue Tart ($5.00): Lemon curd topped with toasted meringue.
  • Cinnamon Bun ($5.25): Topped with vanilla bean cream cheese icing.
