Wednesday evening took an unexpected turn when our induction cooktop broke. We spent the night walking around the Cambie Street Canadian Tire to find a replacement, but we left empty-handed. We checked the nearby Save-On-Foods for dinner, but the display cases looked a bit sad and unappetizing.

Feeling a bit defeated, we started the walk home. I suggested we check the London Drugs at Olympic Village for the cooktop and then stop by the Save-On-Foods there. It turned out to be the best decision of the night.

The Grocery Meal Love Affair

I have this love affair with grabbing ready-to-eat meals at the grocery store, which I really should start documenting more often. You get relatively good food with no effort at reasonable prices, and most importantly: you do not need to tip.

Don't get me wrong, I usually love tipping at 20%. My siblings have worked and still work in restaurants, so I know how difficult the industry can be. I always want to share my blessings when I am able, but those costs do add up. Sometimes, grocery chain meals are the best option to save a few bucks and avoid the effort of cooking at home.

A Cozy Discovery in Olympic Village

A well-stocked sandwich display case at Save-On-Foods Olympic Village featuring made in-store wraps and sandwiches.
The "Made In-Store" selection is a beautiful sight at 8:00 PM. From pesto chicken to festive turkey, there is a sentimental comfort in finding a well-stocked case after a long day.

The Kitchen section at the Save-on-Foods Olympic Village location is surprisingly beautiful. With its warm wood tables and great seating, it feels more like a local café. Even arriving at 8:00 PM, the display cases were still full of options, from sandwiches and wraps to rotisserie chicken.

Thanksgiving Between Two Slices

A close-up of a Turkey Cranberry and Stuffing Sandwich on cranberry bread from Save-On-Foods The Kitchen.
The start of the night: Thanksgiving in a sandwich. The tart cranberry bread and savoury stuffing make this a smooch-worthy rescue for any stressful Wednesday.

I chose the Turkey Cranberry w/ Stuffing Sandwich ($9.99). It is essentially a festive Thanksgiving meal tucked into a sandwich. The bread is soft with tart cranberry pieces baked right in, and the filling is a generous mix of tender turkey and savoury stuffing. They added lettuce for a crisp, fresh touch. Although a quick warm-up left a few spots a little cold, the flavours were comforting. It is the kind of sandwich I would gladly write a love letter to.

My husband went for the Half Rotisserie Chicken ($8.99). The thigh was succulent and perfectly seasoned, though the drumstick was a bit dry. We paired it with Potato Wedges, which were stale by 8:00 PM, but they had a peppery kick that I enjoyed.

A half rotisserie chicken served in a plastic container from the hot meal section of a grocery store.
A reliable classic. While the drumstick was a bit dry, the juicy thigh meat was the perfect, peppery pick-me-up we needed.

The 8:00 PM wedges. They were a little tired by the end of the night, but they still carried a bold, peppery kick that kept things interesting.
