Happy Saturday! What a beautiful day it turned out to be. It was raining quite a bit this morning, but the clouds completely cleared out to leave us with an absolutely sunny and gorgeous afternoon. With the weather looking so bright, I decided to take a lovely walk over to Gene Cafe to catch up on some blogging while hubby worked.
If you are familiar with the area, you know that Gene Cafe sits right in that distinctive triangle point where Kingsway ends and transitions to become part of Main Street. It is an amazing spot for people-watching. To kick off my afternoon, I ordered my usual go-to drink, an unsweetened matcha latte with creamy oatmilk ($6.50). It was a very solid, pretty standard coffee shop version with a beautiful green colour.

Since I had missed out on a proper lunch, I also decided to treat myself to their Grilled Croissant Sandwich ($8.50) packed with smoked turkey. I have always absolutely loved a warm croissant, so I was thrilled when I saw those beautiful, charred grilled lines across the pastry. Unfortunately, the inside layers of the turkey and cheese remained quite cold, which was a bit of a letdown. Even so, it was still a very satisfying and flaky bite for a light afternoon lunch.

A little while later, hubby finished up his work and walked over to join me at the cafe. To celebrate the weekend, we decided to order a second round of drinks to share. Hubby picked out a fascinating creation called the Polish Pillow ($6.00). This is a latte-style beverage crafted using "Krakus," which is a traditional Polish grain coffee made from roasted rye and chicory.
The whole drink is sweetened with a combination of raspberry and almond syrups. It is delightfully sweet, and it leaves behind an incredible, nutty almond syrup aftertaste that I absolutely loved. It was so incredibly good, and it acted as the perfect, sweet punctuation mark to a relaxed neighborhood afternoon.
