purebread Mount Pleasant Review: Chocolate Cake & Brownies

🍰 Late-Night Sweet Spot: purebread

Location: 5 E 5th Ave, Vancouver (Mount Pleasant)
My Choice: Chocolate Espresso Cake ($7.49)
Hubby's Choice: Rocky Road Brownie ($4.95)

After our sandwich dinner, we enjoyed a quiet walk home together. Knowing we had some warm chamomile tea waiting for us, I was craving something sweet to pair with it. We decided to stop by the Mount Pleasant location of purebread (at 5 E 5th Ave), arriving just 20 minutes before they closed.

If you have ever been to purebread near closing time, you know the drill. Looking into the display case, there were only a few treats left. Still, we managed to walk away with a couple of delicious looking options: the Chocolate Espresso Cake ($7.49) for me, and the Rocky Road Brownie ($4.95) for hubby.

A rich, dark chocolate espresso cake in a white box, piled high with thick, swirling espresso icing dusted with cocoa.
The Chocolate Espresso Cake, featuring an incredibly rich swirl of coffee icing.

The chocolate cake itself is beautifully dense and not overly sweet. However, the real kicker is the espresso icing piled on top. It has an incredibly strong, punchy coffee flavour, and it is very sweet. It was actually so sweet that I ended up saving half of it to enjoy tomorrow!

The Rocky Road Brownie, a perfect balance of soft marshmallow, crunchy peanuts, and decadent chocolate.

On the other hand, Hubby's Rocky Road Brownie was absolutely perfect. It featured soft, pillowy marshmallows and crunchy peanuts, all coated in smooth chocolate on top of a truly decadent, fudgy brownie base.

Between the two treats, I would happily choose that brownie again on our next visit.
