I just had a total "lightbulb moment" about our recent mid-week dinner adventure! It was Canada Day, and while most people were out enjoying the holiday festivities, I actually had to log some hours and work. What a sweet husband move—Hubby surprised me by driving over to pick me up from the office, instantly turning a standard holiday workday into a festive, spontaneous date night.
With no set plans and a lively holiday energy in the air, we strolled along Robson Street trying to settle on a dinner spot. That’s when we stumbled upon Super Chef Grill. It is the absolute definition of a no-frills, hidden gem hole-in-the-wall. The space is simple, the menu is wonderfully focused, and everything is whipped up fresh to order.
Hubby settled on the incredibly rich and savoury Black Pepper Chicken ($14.95). It arrived piping hot over a generous bed of fluffy rice, glistening in a perfectly balanced pepper sauce with tender chicken chunks and crisp broccoli.

I wanted something with a serious kick to celebrate the evening, so I ordered the Extra Spicy Mapo Tofu with Chicken ($15.95). Let me tell you, they did not hold back on the heat! The dish was swimming in a fiery, rich, deeply aromatic sauce packed with silky tofu and chicken. It was spectacularly flavorful, but it definitely had my tongue burning after a few bites!
Luckily, this little shop has the most comforting policy—if you need a little help taming the flames, all you have to do is ask for extra rice on the house. I enthusiastically took them up on that, and the extra scoop balanced out the intense spice perfectly.
