It is wild how fast the food scene moves in this city. At the end of June, the corner of Main Street and 12th Ave was still home to AFURI Ramen. We actually managed to swing by and enjoy their food for the very first and last time.
Fast forward less than a month later, we found ourselves back in the neighbourhood and were absolutely shocked to see the space had already transformed into Sushi Nami. They are currently in their soft opening mode. The service is incredibly friendly, though you can tell they need to be a little better coordinated as they find their rhythm.
The Strategy: Navigating the Combos
If you are looking for a solid bang for your buck, their combo menus are where it is at. They offer a NAMI Special Combo A ($19.95) where you get to choose any three rolls, which I think is a fantastic deal.
But since we wanted to sample a bit of everything, we decided to mix it up. My husband opted for the premium NAMI Aburi Combo ($28.75), while I built my own feast with the NAMI Special Combo B ($29.95), which lets you select any four items.
The Taste Test: Umami Wins and Creamy Classics
Before the heavy hitters arrived, we started with the essentials. First up was the Miso Soup, and honestly, it is better than what you get at other spots. I realized the secret is the specific seaweed they use, which imparts another gorgeous pop of deep, savoury umami to the broth.

For my combo selections, I started with the Takoyaki (4 pcs), which arrived beautifully crisp on the outside and wonderfully comforting on the inside.

As for the rest of my rolls, everything tasted exceptionally fresh. The Salmon Maki (6 pcs) was a simple, clean bite of seaweed, fresh salmon, and perfectly seasoned rice. The fish definitely did not feel like it had been previously frozen, which is always a massive green flag.
The Yam Roll (8 pcs) was beautifully executed, offering a sweet, creamy yam filling tucked neatly between the nori and rice. To round it out, the Salmon Avocado Roll (8 pcs) was exactly as you would hope, featuring clean salmon and velvety avocado with sushi rice and a subtle texture from bits of sesame.

The Premium Side: Hubby’s Aburi Feast
My husband’s choice leaned toward a higher-end experience, and it looked absolutely gorgeous. His platter featured a curated 12-piece mix of Aburi Nigiri and pressed Oshi sushi, including Salmon Oshi, Toki flamed salmon, aburi tuna, aburi saba, aburi hamachi, and aburi unagi.

His absolute favourite of the night? The Unagi. That smoky, sweet glaze combined with the delicate touch of the torch sear completely stole the show.
If you find yourself strolling past Main and 12th, it is well worth popping in to check out their soft opening and treating yourself to one of these combos before the word gets out.
