There is nothing quite like hitting the ground running after an incredible annual leave! My colleagues decided to welcome me back to the office with a hilarious twist for our weekly company-paid team lunch. To make sure I wouldn't experience immediate withdrawal from the vibrant food scene in Mexico City, they themed this week’s lunch entirely around Mexican food right here in Vancouver!
Because we scheduled a late 2:00 pm lunch session, it lined up perfectly with the start of happy hour at our team's favourite neighbourhood spot: Patron Taco and Cantina. Their happy hour runs from Tuesday to Friday between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm, and it offers some of the best mid-day comfort food values in the city.

The Crunchy Delight: Shredded Beef Tostada ($8)
I have a minor confession to make: no matter how many times I order it, my brain always accidentally confuses a tostada with a torta right up until the plate lands on the table! But once it arrives, all confusion melts away.

Built on a crunchy fried corn tortilla base, this tostada is a steal for eight dollars. While you can opt for chicken tinga, I highly recommend choosing the beef here. Patron’s shredded beef dishes are consistently superior. The meat is flawlessly tender, pull-apart soft, and deeply flavourful. Spread over a layer of savoury refried beans and topped with crisp lettuce, fresh tomatoes, a good drizzle of sour cream, and crumbled cheese, it delivers the ultimate texturally satisfying bite.

To share with the table, I also grabbed a plate of their Happy Hour Nachos ($12). To make sure my vegetarian colleague could fully dive in, I kept it meat-free (though you can add beef or chicken for an extra two dollars if you prefer!).

Size-wise, the happy hour portion is about three times smaller than their usual nachos, but what it lacks in surface area, it entirely makes up for in sheer decadence. The kitchen absolutely smothered this mountain in thick, melted cheese, loaded it up with sour cream, sliced black olives, and fresh tomatoes. Honestly, I think the cheese-to-tortilla-chip ratio leaned heavily in favour of the cheese—which is exactly how a comfort-food nacho plate should be!
It was the absolute perfect transition back into city life, surrounded by great food and even better work friends.
