Hubby and I have been chasing Taiwanese food ever since we fell in love with a little spot in Makati City called Dang Dee. Their generous portions of Taiwanese sausage, huge fried chicken legs, and fried pork chops with rice, egg, and pickled vegetables at such reasonable prices spoiled us for life. It's closed now, but that love never faded. When we discovered Taiwanfest here in Vancouver back in 2019, we tried to make it a yearly tradition, always hunting for that same kind of authentic comfort.

Verdict: Comfort food that brought back memories. The fried rice noodles were the standout, reminiscent of homemade Taiwanese classics.
This year, we lined up at Lin Family Eatery and I may have gotten a little excited with the ordering. I grabbed the deep fried chicken nuggets ($16), deep fried squid tentacles ($16), and fried rice noodles ($12).

The crispy chicken nuggets were okay. They're not the best ever, that title still belongs to Redbeef. The tender squid tentacles were quite good, though I have to admit there are vendors at the Vancouver Christmas Market and Richmond Night Market with versions that edge them out slightly.
But the real story here is the fried rice noodles. The flavour took me straight back to my grandma's homemade pancit. The taste and texture are so similar, the only real difference being these have mushrooms mixed in, whereas her version had lots of cabbage. That dish hit different, bringing back waves of nostalgia in the best way possible. Sometimes food does more than feed you, it connects you to the people and memories you miss.
Another year at Taiwanfest, another excellent experience. Whether it's the food, the community, or just the annual tradition we've built around it, there's something special about this festival.
