Verdict: Now I understand the hype. These mochi donuts are a revelation, crispy outside, chewy and savoury inside, with just the right amount of sweetness.
I get it now. This morning, hubby and I woke up earlier than usual and walked the ~4.5 kilometres to Their There in Kitsilano for their final day of operation. Our mission: try the popular mochi donuts everyone's been raving about. After about half an hour of lining up outside, we finally made it to the front of the queue and managed to snag one creamy white rabbit donut ($5) and one indulgent cereal milk donut ($5). The brown sugar was already sold out by then. Now I understand why this place became such a cult favourite.
Here's the magic: the mochi donuts feel like they're steamed first, then deep fried. That means you get a crispy, golden exterior that shatters when you bite into it, but the inside remains chewy and savoury in the most satisfying way. The glaze drizzle on top provides sweetness, but not overwhelming sweetness, which as the Asian in me would say, is the biggest compliment you can give any dessert. It hits that perfect sweet spot where it's indulgent without being cloying.

| White Rabbit: milky sweet glaze with perfectly chewy, savoury mochi interior. |
The creamy white rabbit mochi is milky sweet with that signature mochi texture contrast. The cereal milk version tastes almost identical, the main difference being the satisfying crunch of toasted cereal on top, which adds another layer of texture and interest. If I'm being honest, I prefer the white rabbit just slightly, but I absolutely understand why people line up for these. You have the sweet, milky glaze meeting the chewy, almost savoury mochi, and that combination is dangerously addictive.

I also grabbed the pandan vanilla bean matcha ($9) again because I absolutely loved it during our last visit on Wednesday. That drink is special, the fragrant pandan paired with vanilla and matcha is like tasting nostalgia in a cup. So good.

I'm beating myself up for not discovering Their There sooner, and I'm doubly sad that I had to wait until their final day to try these iconic mochi donuts. That said, I'm grateful we got to experience it, even if it was in those last precious hours. Sometimes a place captures lightning in a bottle, and Their There was undoubtedly one of those spots. If you were ever curious about why people raved about their mochi donuts, now you know. They deserve every bit of love they received.
Have you been to Their There, or have you tried mochi donuts from another spot? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
