I worked in a building right near the entrance to Granville Island for almost five years, so this market used to be part of my everyday. Somehow it's been forever since I last actually walked through it. Today my husband had a meeting, so I figured I'd use the time to wander around and see what's changed.

Granville Island Public Market

On the way in from the west side bus stop, I already counted four tour buses parked nearby, so I had a feeling it was going to be a packed one.

Inside the Granville Island Public Market

With this many ready-to-eat stalls under one roof, you can go from a savoury lunch to a sweet dessert without ever leaving the building. I've grouped everything by what you're craving, and I've noted where GST is added on top since it isn't the same at every stall. Prices are what we saw on the day we visited, so they may change.

One update worth flagging up front: Fuji Corner, the market's Japanese spot with fresh sashimi, hearty bento boxes, and steaming ramen, has closed since our 2023 guide. As of this update, there's no fresh sushi, hearty bento, or steaming ramen left inside the Public Market, so if that's what you're craving, you'll need to look elsewhere in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Another change since our 2023 guide: Preservatory Provisions & Toast Bar closed in 2024, so it's no longer part of the market's lineup.

Gourmet Wok

Full disclosure: Gourmet Wok is my personal favourite stall in the whole market, and I always end up eating way more than I planned to here. The setup's shifted a bit since 2023 too, it's now built around a "pick your items, choose your base" combo system rather than fixed named dishes.

Chau Cafe (formerly Chau Veggie Express)

Here's a genuine surprise from this update: Chau Veggie Express has rebranded as Chau Cafe, leaning into a "cozy Vietnamese, wellness inspired" identity. Gone are the old numbered menu items, replaced with a whole new lineup, though a few familiar names (like the Golden Temple Soup) have carried over. They also now cook everything in 100% avocado oil.

La Tortilleria has had a serious glow-up since 2023, sleeker branding, a "made in-house with the freshest ingredients" philosophy, and a much bigger menu split across breakfast, mains, taco salads, and a dedicated kids menu (Los Niños). GST is added on top of the prices below.

Market Too Busy? Here's Where Else to Eat on the Island

If the market's packed, or you're after something a little different, Granville Island has plenty more to eat and drink outside the main hall.

Popina Canteen

You'll pass Popina Canteen on the way from the Public Market to Bridges, and I recommend their sweet, topping-loaded puffcream. The menu notes that all of their food is made to order and good food takes time, so factor in a little wait. Beyond the puffcream, they serve juicy burgers, crispy chicken and cod sandwiches, and a hearty East Coast lobster roll, plus BC wines, local beer and cocktails.

A Bread Affair

A Bread Affair sits just south of the Public Market, and there are usually performances in the plaza out front, so it's a lively spot to stop by.

Head east of the Public Market and you'll find the historic Creekhouse, which holds a few good stops on both sides of the building.

Granville Island Gelato & Coffee Cafe

On the north side of the Creekhouse, facing False Creek, you'll find Granville Island Gelato & Coffee Cafe. It's usually much quieter than the Public Market, which makes it a calm place to grab creamy gelato or a rich coffee and take a break from the crowds.

The Sandbar

The Sandbar is in the same Creekhouse building as the gelato cafe, and it runs a little pricier than the casual spots around the market.

Rogers Chocolates

On the other side of the Creekhouse, facing the streets of Granville Island, is Rogers Chocolates. It's a good place to pick up sweet chocolates labelled "Vancouver" or "Canada" as souvenirs.

Over at the Chain & Forge building under the bridge, there's a proper sit-down restaurant, a drinks spot, and two new places opening soon.

Alimentaria Mexicana

Alimentaria Mexicana is a proper sit-down restaurant in the Chain & Forge building, so it's a good option if you don't want to fight for a table inside the Public Market. The menu is built around shareable plates, hearty mains, and handmade corn tortilla tacos, with a house-made dessert to finish.

One more thing to know: the Net Loft building still doesn't have any food options, so eat before you go browsing there.

The next three spots are far from the market, so check the map for Railspur Alley, a pedestrian-only lane. Walking along it, you'll come across a distillery, a sake maker, and an espresso bar.

Vancouver Fish Company Restaurant & Bar

On the west side of the bridge, Vancouver Fish Company Restaurant & Bar is the first spot you'll see. It's a proper sit-down restaurant, so it's a good pick if you'd rather have a relaxed seafood meal than eat on your feet. I've written about a Christmas lunch date there in a past post.

If you're walking in from the east side of the bridge, the first spot you'll see is My Island Cafe, where you can grab creamy gelato and a rich coffee.

Right after My Island Cafe, you'll see Licorice Parlour.

Bean Stalk Bistro (Inside the Kids Market)

Inside the Kids Market, Bean Stalk Bistro has a wide range of casual bites, from sweet bubble tea and fruity smoothies to juicy burgers, hearty sandwiches, and hot dogs. They also serve steamed dumplings, warming wonton noodle soup, and crispy fries, so there's something for everyone in a group.

What are the Public Market's hours?
Typically 9am to 6pm daily, but individual stalls vary, so it's worth confirming before you go.

Where can I sit down for a proper meal if the market is too busy?
Alimentaria Mexicana in the Chain & Forge building is a proper sit-down restaurant, and Vancouver Fish Company Restaurant & Bar and The Keg are near the entrance to Granville Island.

Are there vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free options?
Yes. Chau Cafe has vegan crispy rolls and gluten-friendly dumplings, Sprig serves a hearty vegan falafel plate, La Tortilleria marks its vegetarian and gluten-free dishes, Market Grill has a Vegan Deluxe burger, and Flavours of Hope has vegan and gluten-free items. Menus change, so check each stall's board.

Do the stalls add tax to the listed prices?
It varies by stall. Pizza Pzazz & Gelato includes tax in its prices, while stalls like Celine's Fish & Chips, La Tortilleria, and Fraser Valley Juice & Salad Bar add GST on top. Market Grill and Kaisereck also list prices before tax. Each stall's section above notes what applies.

What has changed since the 2023 guide?
Fuji Corner has closed, and Preservatory Provisions & Toast Bar closed in 2024. Chau Veggie Express is now Chau Cafe, and Blue Parrot Espresso Bar no longer serves bubble tea. New finds on this visit include Northern Bars, La Bise Bakery, Lina's Deli, and Flavours of Hope Cafe.

Where can I find a quieter spot for gelato or coffee?
Granville Island Gelato & Coffee Cafe, on the north side of the Creekhouse facing False Creek, is usually much quieter than the Public Market.

Is there any food at the Net Loft?
No, the Net Loft building still doesn't have any food options, so eat before you go browsing there.
