Saiko Sushi Vancouver Review: A Hidden Gem on West Broadway

Surprised by Saiko: A High-Quality Sushi Hidden Gem on West Broadway

After attending the Mass of the Last Supper this evening, my husband and I took a long, reflective walk along West Broadway. As we strolled from Maple towards Cambie, we found ourselves doing what we do best: chatting about which restaurants we have tried and which ones are still on our list.

When we reached Saiko Sushi, I’ll admit I was skeptical. This spot replaced the International Sandwich Factory, and I remember wondering if the Broadway corridor actually needed another sushi place. With so many established names nearby—like Masa, Namiya, the high-end Tojo’s, and Minato—I wasn't sure if Saiko could offer anything new.

Smooch Food Tip: The fish quality here punches way above its weight class. Try the Bluefin O-Toro Nigiri if you’re feeling fancy!

I was so wrong.

While most Japanese restaurants in the area have massive, multi-page menus, Saiko is refreshingly different. They have a focused, one-page menu. You won't find bento boxes here. Instead, they offer a curated selection of 12 appetizers, fresh sashimi, nigiri, five types of udon, and specialty rolls.

We decided to dive into their Specialty Rolls:

A top-down view of a rectangular black platter with two distinct sushi rolls. The top row is a Rainbow Roll, showing the diverse colours of fresh tuna, salmon, and white fish. The bottom row is a Dragon Roll, topped with glazed unagi (eel). The plate includes mounds of wasabi and pickled ginger.
A spectacular double-platter: The Rainbow Roll (top row) with its assorted fresh seafood, and the Dragon Roll (bottom row) featuring that perfectly glazed unagi. It's like a sushi feast on a single plate!

  • Saiko Special Roll ($17): Negihama and kappa, topped with tuna, salmon, tai, avocado, and a special sauce.
  • Dragon Roll ($14): Deep-fried prawn with avocado and eel on top.
  • Rainbow Roll ($14): A classic California roll base with assorted fresh seafood on top.

The Saiko Special Roll
You can actually see the quality and freshness of the tuna and salmon. It's rare to find this level of "melt-in-your-mouth" fish at this price point.

The quality of the raw fish was honestly mind-blowing, especially at these price points. It is rare to find such high-grade fish in such a laid-back, unassuming setting. While they do have more expensive items on the menu, even the standard rolls felt like a step above the rest.

We still have a few more spots to check off our Broadway list, but Saiko Sushi has definitely earned a spot in our regular rotation. It truly deserves all those 5-star reviews on Google Maps!
