I have loved matcha since way before it became the massive trend it is today. If I am being completely honest about why it first caught my eye, it's simply because green has always been my absolute favourite colour! Now that I have firmly established my default way of ordering it (unsweetened with oat milk) it has become incredibly easy for me to instantly assess the quality of a café's powder and tell if a drink has been watered down.

So far, Vancouver has no shortage of amazing spots, and I have found some exceptionally high-quality matcha at places like C Market Cafe and Ciclo, while Blaze near me serves up a very decent cup too. Vancouverites have a deep love for this green elixir, boasting dedicated staples like Nana's Green Tea and Whisk Matcha Cafe (which is still on my list to try!). Naturally, when Emeri Matcha Bar opened its doors just within the last month, you know I had to visit.

Hubby decided to experience their traditional preparation and ordered the Koicha (thick tea) featuring the Samioku Matcha ($13). It arrived served in an authentic clay bowl. The liquid has a stunningly deep, vibrant green colour and consists purely of high-grade matcha whisked with water—no milk and no sweeteners allowed. Hubby noted that drinking it is very much like throwing back an espresso shot; it is thick, incredibly pure, and carries a bold, bitter earthiness.

I stuck to my reliable favourite and got the Classic Matcha Latte ($7.25), ordered completely unsweetened with oat milk. It hit the spot! There was zero unpleasant bitterness and it wasn't diluted or watered down in the slightest. Instead, you just get a smooth and pure earthiness.

The only real drawback is that they currently do not serve any food items at all. I am not entirely sure if keeping it strictly to drinks is an intentional choice to focus purely on the tea craft, or if pastries and snacks might be something they plan to introduce as they settle into the space in the future. Either way, for pure tea quality, it's a fantastic new addition to the city.
