Right while we were right in the middle of our quick lunch over at Milano Coffee, my phone rang. It was Vancouver General Hospital with a last-minute opening for my ultrasound at 1:45 PM today! Of course, I jumped at the chance and said yes. We headed straight home, and I managed to power through a super productive two hours of work before we had to head back out the door to VGH.

Once the appointment was all done, we decided we earned a little afternoon pick-me-up. We walked over to Java Express on West 10th Ave. Since this neighbourhood spot is only open on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, making a trip here is always a bit of a scheduling challenge but today, the timing aligned perfectly!

Remembering our sweet mocha experiment from earlier in the day, I ordered their Hedgehog Mocha with decaf beans ($5.75). Sadly, I completely forgot to snap a picture of it! Interestingly enough, it wasn't nearly as sweet as the version over at Milano Coffee, offering a milder chocolate profile.

Because it was quite warm and beautiful outside, Hubby opted for something icy and refreshing: the White Chocolate Mocha Frappe ($5.50). It was sweet, frosty, and the ultimate comfort drink for a sunny afternoon walk.

For a late bite, I picked up their Pink Salmon Salad Sandwich ($8.75). It comes packed with a flavourful salmon salad, avocado, fresh lettuce, and crisp cucumber tucked securely between slices of hearty whole wheat bread. Oh my goodness, it works *so* well together! You all know how much I love the combination of rich salmon and creamy avocado, so this was an absolute home run for me.

Hubby, who naturally loves his sweet treats, set his sights on the bakery case and chose the Pecan Chocolate Bar ($3.95). To our pleasant surprise, it wasn't overly sweet at all! The rich chocolate base was beautifully balanced by a deep, toasted nuttiness from the pecans.

After finishing up our quick afternoon bite, we hurriedly walked back home so I could squeeze in two more hours burst of work before finally closing out my laptop for the week. It was a hectic, fast-paced day, but getting to try a new local spot made it feel like a victory.

Do you have a hidden gem cafe that's hard to get to because of their hours? Tell me all about it in the comments!
