The Verdict: A dependable neighborhood spot for a casual dinner. Fresh sashimi, crispy bite-sized karaage, and a light tempura batter featuring crisp asparagus.

It was a beautiful Sunday, and much like yesterday, we decided to take the morning nice and slow. We took care of some quick cleaning around the house and enjoyed a relaxing brunch at home before walking over to St. Patrick's for 5:00 PM Mass.

Afterwards, we walked over to Fable Diner, hoping to catch a meal before they officially close their doors on August 23. Unfortunately, I didn't realize they close early at 4:00 PM on Sundays! Pivoting on short notice, we decided to grab a quick dinner right next door at Sushi Kaido, located at the corner of Main Street and Broadway (189 E Broadway, Vancouver).

Sashimi, Karaage Donburi & Assorted Tempura

Since I am still keeping an eye on my diet, I opted for their Sashimi Sushi Combo ($20.95). It comes with salmon and tuna sashimi, along with an assortment of nigiri including salmon, tuna, ebi, hokkigai (surf clam), and scallop. The fish was fresh, clean, and served at a good temperature (nothing felt icy or overly chilled).

My husband decided to get the Chicken Karaage Donburi ($17.95). The chicken was nicely fried and rather than large thigh cutlets, these were smaller bite-sized pieces reminiscent of crunchy chicken nuggets, drizzled with savory sauce and served over rice with pickled radish on the side.

As a last-minute addition to share, we also ordered the Assorted Tempura ($16.95). It included 4 pieces of prawn tempura and 4 pieces of vegetable tempura (asparagus, purple sweet potato, sweet potato, and squash). The batter was light and crispy. I especially enjoyed the asparagus piece, which is a neat touch you don't always see in standard tempura mix platters.

Comparing it to a few other neighborhood spots, I still personally prefer the offerings at Mr. Sushi, but I found Sushi Kaido to be a solid step up from Sushi California along Broadway. It was a pleasant, convenient spot for a quick Sunday evening meal!
