- Verdict: One of Vancouver's best spots for Nepalese and Himalayan style dumplings, with a menu deep enough for a dozen return trips.
We have been quietly obsessed with BC Momo Restaurant & Bar on Seymour Street for over a year now, and somehow we still have not made it through the whole menu. It started with a company team lunch back when this Nepali and Indian spot had just opened, and it has since become our go to for everything from casual weeknight team lunches to a proper date night dinner. After enough visits to lose count, we finally pulled together every dish we have tried, with prices and honest verdicts, into one place.
The Momo Lineup
Steamed Buff Momo
$16.00If you only order one thing here, make it this. Buff (water buffalo) brings a robust, gamey, deeply savoury note that steaming lets shine through, tucked into thin, tender wrappers. It comes with two dipping sauces, including a rich, velvety butter chicken gravy that steals the show.
Chicken Afgani Momo
$15.51An absolute revelation. The star here is a luxurious, creamy white sauce we would happily dip anything into. Try mixing it with the butter chicken gravy from the steamed buff momo for an unlockable new level of deliciousness.
Jhol Buff Momo
$18.00Gloriously steamed dumplings sitting in a fragrant, savoury broth with a sour kick, like a gentler cousin of tom yum. A properly comforting bowl for a rainy Vancouver day.
Laphing
$14.00A fiery cold dish of wrappers stuffed with crunchy fried noodles and peanuts. Pair it with the jhol momo if you can handle serious spice, it cuts right through the broth.
The Buff Platter
$24.00A fun, generous sampler split into three styles: crispy deep fried, garlicky chilly (sauteed with ginger, onion, and peppers), and marinated tandoori. Great value for a group, but the cooking process masks some of the texture that makes the steamed version so special.
Noodles & Sides
Veggie Chow Mein
$15.00A deep, fiery heat you will not find in the Chinese or Filipino versions of this dish, tossed with crisp vegetables in comforting Hakka style noodles.
Shrimp Chow Mein
$16.00Just as spicy as its veggie counterpart, with sweet, juicy shrimp mixed through the noodles for a nice contrast against the heat.
Fish Pakora
$13.00Delicate pieces of basa fish marinated with carom seeds and warm spices, dipped in chickpea batter, and fried to a beautiful crisp. A light, perfect snacking dish between heavier bites.
Beyond the Momos: Curries
Chicken Vindaloo
$TBDFrom our very first visit, back when BC Momo had just replaced our old go to Chakra Indian Restaurant: a comforting chicken vindaloo served with basmati rice and garlic naan. Delicious, though we wished it ran spicier, this was the dish that first convinced us the service, interior, and food here were worth coming back for.
