Filipino Bakery Goldilocks Closes Vancouver Doors: A Sentimental Farewell

The morning began with a quiet Mass and a visit to the newly opened Nomad in Kitsilano for breakfast. But as we stepped back outside, there was only one place on our minds. Today, March 15, is the final day for the Goldilocks location on Main Street, and we knew we had to make the trip to say goodbye.

We decided to walk all the way from Kits to Main. It felt like the right way to process the news, a slow, sentimental journey across the city to a place that has been a constant staple for the community.

A Taste of the Philippines on Main Street

For many of us, Goldilocks is more than just a bakery. It is a legendary Filipino chain that brings a piece of home to Vancouver. While it is heartbreaking to see this specific shop close its doors, there is a small comfort in knowing that the Burnaby location is still standing for those sudden cravings.

But today was about saying goodbye to this corner of our neighbourhood. When we finally reached the doors, the air was thick with the scent of yeasty bread and shared memories. It felt like we were visiting an old friend one last time.

The Last Yellow Box

We made sure to fill our bags with the things we love most. We walked away with some charred pork barbecue skewers that always hit the spot. We also grabbed a velvety mocha buttercream roll (my favourite), the kind of cake that belongs at every celebration.

For tomorrow's coffee, we tucked away a dozen pillowy pandesal rolls. And of course, we couldn't leave without the crumbly pinipig polvoron shortbread that melts the moment you take a bite.

Walking Away from an Era

As we started the walk back, those yellow bags felt a little heavier than usual. It is hard to imagine Main Street without that iconic glow, but I am glad we made the trek one last time.

Thank you, Goldilocks, for being the reliable heart of so many Sunday traditions. You will be missed by all of us here in the city.

Where to find your Filipino fix tomorrow:

If you find yourself on Main Street missing that familiar yellow glow, do not worry. You can still find fresh Spanish bread and pandesal just a block away at Pamilya Delights (Main and 11th).

For those craving savoury classics like beef pares or sisig, Klasik Filipino Cuisine at Broadway and Fraser is a wonderful choice. And of course, for a legendary Jollibee fix, the Cambie and Broadway location is just a short trip away for a Palabok.
