Slo Vancouver Cafe Review: Hunting for the Best Crunchy Muffin Tops

✨ At a Glance: Quick Facts

📍 Location: Slo (Near Granville Station — Downtown Vancouver, BC)
🧁 Ordered: Date & Walnut Muffin ($5.00), Chocolate Banana Muffin ($5.00), Unsweetened Oat Milk Matcha Latte ($7.75)
⭐ Smooch Verdict: A triumphant win for the muffin hunt! Despite a rough initial impression with the shop's scent today, the exceptional crunchy-topped muffins are a local hidden gem. The matcha is acceptable but won't dethrone the city's reigning green tea champions.

Our Tuesday adventure continues! After wrapping up an early food court lunch over at Metrotown, we jumped on the SkyTrain and headed straight Downtown for work. Right after exiting Granville station, we decided to pop by a cafe called Slo. I am not entirely sure what was happening behind the scenes during this particular lunch hour, but the store interior absolutely reeked. It smelled so distinctly unpleasant that I genuinely contemplated walking right back out the door!

However, I am currently going through a major muffin phase and have been actively searching Vancouver for the absolute best one. So far, I have really enjoyed the version from Tractor (which I still need to sit down and write a proper review for!). The classic wild blueberry muffin from Tim Hortons is quite tasty too, but it lacks that distinctly crispy, crunchy muffin top that I desperately crave.

Since a colleague specifically told me that Slo bakes a fantastic muffin, I decided to brave the scent and order both of the available flavours they had on display: the Date & Walnut Muffin ($5.00) and the Chocolate Banana Muffin ($5.00). Oh my goodness. They were spectacular! Each one featured that beautiful, crispy textured edge that I love so much, balanced with the perfect amount of subtle sweetness. Between the two, I definitely prefer the walnut option because I love a sweet and slightly savoury combination.

My absolute favourite: The sweet and slightly savoury Date & Walnut Muffin ($5.00).

Naturally, to wash down the baked goods, I also had to test drive their unsweetened matcha latte with oat milk. It turned out to be a decent, quite respectable version. It is certainly a noticeable step above what you would get at most standard corporate coffee shops around town, but it doesn't come close to matching the flawless execution of C Market Cafe or the exquisite sips at Nana's Green Tea. Still, if you are looking for a solid pastry with a good crunch, this spot is absolutely worth a visit.
