Save-On-Foods Sandwiches: Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese and Ham & Swiss Cheese

I have a confession to make. I love grocery chains with ready-to-eat sections. They're usually reasonably priced and of decent quality. Today, we spent a good 20 minutes walking around the Save-On-Foods Deli &l; Ready Made Meals section deciding which one to try.

Save-On-Foods Sandwiches: Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese and Ham & Swiss Cheese

If you're in a hurry and looking for a quick and tasty meal option, I surprisingly can recommend the sandwiches from Save-On-Foods, a popular grocery chain in Canada. In this post, I'll share my thoughts on two of their sandwiches: the Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese and Ham & Swiss.

Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese Sandwich

The Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese Sandwich has thickly sliced white bread, mayonnaise, roast beef, sliced cheddar cheese, and lettuce.

Save-On-Foods Ham & Swiss Cheese

Ham & Swiss Cheese Sandwich

The Ham & Swiss Cheese Sandwich is thick sliced white bread, mayonnaise, bold & spicy mustard, layered with black forest ham, Swiss cheese and lettuce.

Save-On-Foods Roast Beef & Cheddar Cheese

For both sandwiches, the bread was soft, and after placing it for 1 minute in the microwave, the cheese was perfectly melted. However, roast beef has more flavour than ham, so I prefer the Roast Beef sandwich.

Save-On-Foods Sushi: Smoked Salmon Roll and Spicy California Roll

Are you a sushi lover on a budget? If so, you may want to try the sushi rolls from Save-On-Foods, a popular grocery chain in Canada. In this blog post, I'll share my thoughts on two of their rolls: the Smoked Salmon Roll and the Spicy California Roll.

Smoked Salmon Roll

It's the better of the two rolls. The Smoked Salmon Roll is sushi rice rolled with fresh avocado, cucumber, and imitation crab meat topped with smoked salmon lox. Save-On-Foods make it fresh in-store every day. I like the fresh avocado's creaminess and the salmon lox's saltiness.

Left: Smoked Salmon Roll
Right: Spicy California Roll

Spicy California Roll

Meanwhile, the Spicy California Roll is, well, spicy. It's the same content as Smoked Salmon Roll, but this time topped with roasted sesame seeds, spicy mayo, and sriracha. Aside from the heat, not a lot of flavour on this one.

Save-On-Foods sushi rolls won't be the best you've ever had, but they are a decent option for a quick, relatively affordable meal.

Turkey Thursday: Harissa-Spiced Turkey from HelloFresh

Happy Thursday! The last meal from our HelloFresh box is the Cal Smart Harissa-Spiced Turkey with Almond Pilaf which we are having for Thursday dinner.

Cal Smart Harissa-Spiced Turkey with Almond Pilaf from HelloFresh Canada

Cal Smart Harissa-Spiced Turkey with Almond Pilaf

HelloFresh Description:

You won't believe a meal this good is also calorie-conscious! A seasoned rice pilaf is accented with toasted almonds for some nutty crunch, while North African-spiced turkey and veggies bring warm, earthy vibes to complete the dish! Cal Smart is based on a per serving calculation of the recipe's kilocalorie amounts.

Thanks to the Harissa, a North African chilli paste, the dish has a bit of heat and a smoky flavour. I remember seeing a portion of Food Wars (the anime) where I first heard of Harissa. Meanwhile, the basmati rice is perfectly cooked but has a nutty and slightly sweet flavour because of the almonds, which perfectly balances the spicy turkey. Lastly, the parsley adds a bright and fresh note to the dish.

Cal Smart Harissa-Spiced Turkey with Almond Pilaf from HelloFresh Canada

Overall, it is a flavourful and aromatic dish that balances the heat from the Harissa with the nuttiness of the almonds. It is such a delicious and satisfying weeknight dinner.

Orange Juice and Summer Shot from Trish Juice

My hubby has dry cough. The changing weather of warm and cold caused this. He took a sick day from work today so he can sleep and rest. Please pray for his recovery.

For lunch, I ordered rich in vitamin C juices from Trish Juice to help his immune system. We used UberEats and got the meal for free because we have a gift card. Yay for free meal.

Orange Juice

They have a buy 1 take 1 promo on orange juice which means I get a juice too.

Oranges are a good source of vitamin C, which can help boost the immune system and improve respiratory health. Vitamin C is also a natural antioxidant that can help reduce inflammation in the body.

Two orange juice and two Avocado Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap

Drinking orange juice can also help to soothe the throat and reduce irritation, which can help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with a dry cough. The warmth of the juice can also help to loosen mucus in the throat and respiratory tract, making it easier to cough up.

With this information in mind, I'm hoping it will help my husband's dry cough.

Summer Shot

Trish Juice offers "Summer Shot" It is a shot glass combination of orange, lemon, ginger, and honey.

Oranges and lemons are rich in vitamin C, which can help boost the immune system and improve respiratory health. Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body, and honey has antibacterial properties that can soothe the throat and reduce coughing.

Avocado Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap

The Avocado Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap has avocado, grilled chicken, cucumber, lettuce, spinach, cheese mix, and Caesar dressing on a whole wheat tortilla. It is a delicious and nutritious lunch! Yum!

The creaminess of the avocado and cheese mix pairs well with the grilled chicken and crunchy cucumbers, while the Caesar dressing adds a tangy kick.

Avocado Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap

The wrap provides a good source of protein from the chicken and cheese, as well as fiber and nutrients from the vegetables and whole wheat tortilla.

Overall, it's a tasty and filling option that can provide energy throughout the day.

A Foodie's Guide to Must-Try Filipino Food and Restaurants in Vancouver

Are you a foodie looking to explore the diverse culinary scene in Vancouver? Look no further than Filipino cuisine! With its bold flavours, unique ingredients, and rich history, Filipino food is becoming increasingly popular in Vancouver and Canada.

Last year, Filipino Restaurant Month in Canada was launched to promote Filipino cuisine in Canada and support Filipino restaurants. The event is spearheaded by the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary and the Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) and jointly undertaken by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, the Philippine Consulates General (PCG) in Toronto and Vancouver, the PDOT, and the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry.

For the whole month of April, participating restaurants will feature prix fixe menus that showcase the diversity of Filipino food and ingredients. Here's a guide to some must-try Filipino dishes and restaurants participating in the event.

Adobo

First on the list is adobo, a classic Filipino dish made with meat (usually chicken or pork) marinated in vinegar, soy sauce, and spices. The result is a savoury and tangy flavour that will satisfy your taste buds. It is best eaten with a cup of rice. Adobo can be found on the menu at most Filipino restaurants in Vancouver, but I have a confession to make. I don't buy adobo from restaurants because the "best" adobo for every Filipino is the one from their own home perfected by a grandparent or parent. My dad's adobo is still my favourite.

However, you can head to Pampanga's Cuisine or Plato Filipino for their take on the adobo.

Lumpia

Lumpia is a Filipino version of a spring roll. It is made with a thin pastry wrapper filled with ground meat, vegetables, and spices. Lumpia is often served as an appetizer or snack, and it's the perfect finger food to share with friends. Try the Lumpiang Shanghai at Little Ongpin in Richmond, BC, for a crispy and flavorful version of this dish. It's the best lumpia I have tried so far in Metro Vancouver.

Kare-Kare

Kare-Kare is a stew made with oxtail, vegetables, and peanut sauce. It is a hearty and flavorful dish that is usually served with rice. This dish is a must-try for anyone looking to experience the bold flavours of Filipino cuisine. Head to Max's Restaurant for their take on this classic dish.

Lechon

Lechon is a whole roasted pig that is a popular centrepiece for Filipino celebrations. The meat is roasted until it is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and it's usually served with a side of liver sauce. You rarely find lechon at Filipino restaurants in Vancouver, but Kumare offers a belly roll version every weekend. Be sure to give them a call before heading there to ensure availability.

Sinigang

Sinigang is a sour soup made with meat, vegetables, and tamarind. It is a comforting and flavorful soup that is often served with rice. This dish is perfect for a rainy day or when you're feeling under the weather. Try the Sinigang na Hipon (Shrimp) at Grandt Kitchen for a flavorful and comforting version of this soup. However, if you want the same sour soup flavour in a more familiar fries, head to Shameless Buns and try their drool-worthy Sinigang Fries.

Lunch from Shameless Buns, including my favourite, Sinigang Fries.

Halo-Halo

No Filipino meal is complete without dessert, and Halo-Halo is a popular Filipino dessert that is perfect for a hot day. It is made with shaved ice, sweet beans, jellies, fruit, and evaporated milk. It is a refreshing and colourful dessert that is sure to cool you down on a hot summer day. Check out Liberte Café & Restaurant for their version of this dessert.

There you have it, a foodie's guide to must-try Filipino food and restaurants in Vancouver. From savoury stews to crispy spring rolls and refreshing desserts, Filipino cuisine has something for everyone. So why not grab some friends and explore Vancouver's diverse and flavorful culinary scene?

Tex-Mex Tuesday: Mexican-Inspired Shrimp Tacos from HelloFresh

Happy Tuesday! We're changing things up for today's dinner and doing Tex-Mex Tuesday. This new thing offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a delicious chicken quesadilla for breakfast and lunch and a shrimp taco for dinner. We're preparing the Mexican-Inspired Shrimp Tacos with Crunchy Coleslaw and Garlic-Lime Crema from our HelloFresh box.

Mexican-Inspired Shrimp Tacos with Crunchy Coleslaw and Garlic-Lime Crema from HelloFresh

For all three meals, I opted to use the tortilla we got from Costco earlier this month. The smaller tortilla from the HelloFresh kit will go back to the fridge for a quick snack or breakfast this week.

Mexican-Inspired Shrimp Tacos with Crunchy Coleslaw and Garlic-Lime Crema

HelloFresh Description:

You can always rely on tacos to make the family happy, and these are no exception! Tender shrimp are dredged in enchilada-style spices for a hit of smoky, aromatic flavour. A super fresh cabbage and carrot slaw adds the perfect crunch to this mouthwatering dish! Yum!

Because I used a 10-inch tortilla, we had to eat one giant taco instead of three more miniature tacos using a 6-inch tortilla. It was messy and fun to eat. The slaw had a slight bitterness, and I couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. The shrimp was succulent, and I loved the tartness of the lime.

Meatless Monday: Mixed Mushroom Risotto from HelloFresh

It's my first time cooking risotto, and I am pleased that HelloFresh makes it accessible. I only know risotto from watching Master Chef, where they need to make it, or maybe I remember a different show.

Mixed Mushroom Risotto with Fried Sage Leaves from HelloFresh
This dish takes flavour inspiration from your favourite trattoria! Hearty broth plumps up each grain of rice to create an irresistibly creamy risotto. A sprinkle of fragrant, crispy sage leaves will make you feel like a top chef!

Risotto is an Italian dish made with short-grain rice cooked in broth until it reaches a creamy consistency. The dish originates from northern Italy, specifically the Lombardy region, and is considered a staple of Italian cuisine.

I love the fried salted sage, and it's such a filling dish.
