Food Adventure at Powell Street Festival

Happy Saturday! Hubby and I woke up late (noon). After showering, we head straight to Oppenheimer Park for the Powell Street Festival, a celebration of Japanese food and culture. I saw a Totoro mascot and witnessed in person a Mikoshi, something I only see in Japanese anime.

At Oppenheimer Park, we checked out food options and got my favourite Japanese beef curry from Vancouver Buddhist Temple. It was delicious and as expected of this event.

Afterwards, we lined up for yakisoba & korokke served by Tenrikyo Church. The korokke was crispy on the outside and steaming hot and soft on the inside. Meanwhile, the yakisoba is a classic. Yum!

Then, we spotted an even longer line to the Vancouver Japanese Language School food booth. They sell shaved ice, pork okonomiyaki, chicken yakitori, and yakionigiri.

We got them all! 🤣 We ordered the deluxe matcha shaved ice which is perfect for the summer heat. It's sweet from ice cream and different from the matcha and red bean. I love it!

The yakionigiri is crispy rice, the perfect balance for savoury chicken yakitori. Of course, the okonomiyaki is soft and cooked perfectly.

We walked around Powell Street and Alexander. I honestly feel like a character in an anime enjoying a Japanese festival, except I'm in the streets of Vancouver, and it's daytime.

Konko Church of Vancouver

Before leaving the street festival, we spotted the food booth of Konko Church of Vancouver. They're selling imagawayaki. It's a pancake with red beans in the middle. The pancake is so soft, while the red bean is sweet. It's the perfect bite to end our day here.
