Savoury Twists from Tim Hortons

I wanted to say happy Thursday, but it's the 31st of the month, and my salary is not yet in my bank account, causing me great stress this morning. To make myself feel a bit better, I decided to drop by Tim Hortons for my favourite Sausage Farmers Wrap. Then, I noticed that Tims is selling Savoury Twists. There are two variants: Four Cheese Savoury Twists and Everything Savoury Twists.

Okay. This was my first bite of food for the day, and the four cheese was soft, buttery, and cheesy. I absolutely love it. This is so much better than the savoury pastries.

The everything savoury twist is saltier than the four cheese, but it has the same soft, chewy texture.

More of this, please? It's so good. It just made the morning better.

Dacaron™ from Blenz Coffee

I love hanging out at Blenz near our home; recently, they added more sweets to their display case. They now have cakes in a jar and Dacarons™ from Earthling.

Dacarons are when a dacquoise and a macaron have a baby. I have tried macarons, but I have not tried a dacquoise.

The exterior of the dacaron has a similar texture to a macaron but is softer and less chewy. Blenz is offering six different variants, and we picked two: Double Chocolate and Japanese Matcha.

I tried the chocolate first, and since it was my first bite of this new dessert, I was unsure what to expect. The chocolate was not overly sweet and did not have an intense chocolate flavour. Other than a subtle sweetness, it was bland. My husband ate the Japanese Matcha first and loved the double chocolate.

Bottom: Japanese Matcha Dacaron
Both are available in selected Blenz Coffee locations.

I ate the matcha last and could taste the grassy and slightly bitter green tea flavour profile.

I look forward to trying the other flavours: blueberry balsamic, yuzu citrus, strawberry cream, and Tahitian vanilla bean.

Chicken Sun-Dried Pesto Wrap from Blenz Coffee

My husband has a teaching demo this evening. He might teach part-time at the university I graduated from, God-willing. Since I didn't want to disturb him during his demo, I decided to hang out at Blenz Coffee after work.

For dinner, I chose the Chicken Sun-Dried Pesto Wrap. According to the barista, she just made it, which is fantastic. It has a generous amount of chicken, and I also tasted green leafy vegetables (maybe spinach?), but not a strong taste of pesto or sun-dried tomatoes. However, it's one of the better wraps in Blenz.

I am also eyeing the Dacarons and might grab some next time.

Exploring Culinary Creations at Earls Test Kitchen

Happy Sunday! My husband and I watched Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One with my sister and her boyfriend at Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver. Afterwards, we decided to grab an early dinner at nearby Earls Kitchen + Bar Test Kitchen.

My sister, husband, and I got items from the test menu to try new things they offer. Her boyfriend went for the non-test menu, which is a great decision. The test menu is there for a reason.

The test menu items are unique to the test location, and I'll give honest feedback here.

Yuzu Calamari

For our appetizer, we ordered Yuzu Calamari. It's usually rich, fried calamari with unique yuzu aioli and togarashi dipping sauce. After a few bites, I asked hubby if he tasted anything different with this dish. He told me about the dip,   so I focused on analyzing it. Annoyingly, I get no citrusy profile, and since my spice tolerance is relatively high, the supposedly spicy togarashi is not enough.

I'll happily order the calamari again, but I don't think the yuzu-ness came through.

Truffled Parmesan Chicken

For our main course, hubby and I shared the Truffled Parmesan Chicken and Roast Beef Sandwich.

I had high expectations for the Truffled Parmesan Chicken because it comes with mushroom risotto. Unfortunately, I did not taste any truffle flavour; the chicken's exterior was slightly burnt while the interior was dry as the dessert Tom Cruise was horseback riding through in the movie.

The risotto was on the dryer side, too. A third cup of broth and allowing it to be absorbed by the supposed arborio rice. Again, it's not something I'll order again.

Roast Beef Sandwich

It's one of the better foods we tried today. The shaved beef was tender, the grilled sourdough was perfectly buttered, and the arugula added its distinct flavour profile.

However, I am uncertain if I like the horseradish cream. The horseradish intensity and kick were too strong for my liking.

I wonder if I will order this again. The roast beef I had from Blue Hat Cafe at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts is definitely better.

Prime Striploin

My sister ordered the prime striploin with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. She said the crispy onions on top of the mashed potatoes were good, while the seasonal vegetables were excellent. The meat was unevenly cooked - some sections were perfect medium while others were well done. This is the same experience we had the last time we visited Earls.

Key Lime Pie

Finally! Something absolutely excellent from the test menu: the key lime pie. I thought they would give us a slice of key lime pie, but we received what looked like a 5-inch pie, which we shared. It was a perfect balance of sweet and tart. Please bring this to all your locations.

After dinner, we strolled across Burrard Bridge. We went left to South Granville while my sister and her boyfriend went right to Kitsilano.

Chicken Sandwich from Cineplex Outtakes

It's National Cinema Day (https://www.nationalcinemaday.ca/), and movies cost $5.00 at Cineplex. Since I have enough Scene Points, my husband and I watched Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One for free! We watched the adrenaline-packed movie with my sister and her boyfriend at Scotiabank Theatre Vancouver.

Before the movie, I did what I usually do: take menu pictures. My Cineplex Outtakes menu post is receiving a lot of traffic thanks to Barbie and Oppenheimer moviegoers, so it's time to update it. Most things were $2.00 more expensive than last year.

Chicken Sandwiches, Fries, Chicken Boneless Bites, and Chicken Tenders from Cineplex Outtakes

We ordered the Chicken Sandwich Combo for lunch, which is pretty delicious. We also ordered chicken tenders and chicken boneless chicken bites. They taste the same, just different in shape.

After finishing our chicken feast, I want to try the nachos with cheese dip. The one at BC Place is better. Although, they're more generous with their cheese.

I want the cheese dip with fries. Hmmm. Maybe next time I go to the movies.

Beef Kare-Kare and Chicken Barbecue from Pampanga's Cuisine | Pista ng Bayan 2023

Before I discuss the food, I want to say that Pista ng Bayan is one of the better-organized Filipino events we attended in Metro Vancouver this year. I love how the stage is in the middle while the vendors and booths are wrapped around it. You can explore the market while still being entertained by talented Filipinos.

Now, let's discuss the food. After devouring the bento box from Plato Filipino, we got Combo 2 from Pampanga's Cuisine, which comes with our choice of two meat and rice.

I chose beef kare-kare and chicken barbecue.

Combo 2 with Beef Kare-Kare and Chicken Barbecue from Pampanga's Cuisine

The kare-kare didn't look like the usual colour, but it tasted like peanuts,   which is good. I need my veggies and bagoong. But overall, it satisfied my kare-kare craving.

The chicken barbecue was perfectly caramelized outside and still tender inside. It's perfect.

I'm so happy to be able to support both Filipino restaurants that are part of Pista ng Bayan.
