Ham & Cheese Croissant and Bacon & Chives Scone from Lumine Coffee

Happy Sunday! After the reflective and heartening Easter Sunday Mass, my husband and I craved a warm and inviting atmosphere to unwind. With its reputation for delicious coffee and inviting ambiance, Lumine Coffee seemed like the perfect destination.

Stepping inside, we were greeted by a delightful surprise. The cafe, while spacious, bustled with activity. The air vibrated with conversation and the intoxicating aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It was a scene that felt both energizing and comforting, the perfect post-Easter pick-me-up.

Mocha from Lumine Coffee

We settled into comfy seats, eager to explore Lumine's offerings. For my caffeine fix, I opted for an 8oz mocha. The rich, chocolatey flavour perfectly complemented the smooth coffee base, creating a delightful, warm beverage. My husband chose a 6oz flat white. The smaller size allowed him to savour the complete flavour profile of the espresso.

For food, I gravitated towards the classic ham & cheese croissant. The buttery, flaky pastry was a delight, but the real star was the cheese. Melted to an ooey-gooey perfection, it oozed out with every bite, creating a textural and flavour explosion that was simply ridiculously good.

However, the true winner of our brunch date was my husband's choice — the bacon and chive scone. This unassuming pastry turned out to be a revelation. The exterior boasted an unexpectedly crisp texture, offering a delightful contrast to the soft and savoury interior. Each bite was a symphony of flavours and textures—the smoky bacon, the fragrant chives, and the buttery scone — perfectly balanced and utterly delicious.

Our post-Easter visit to Lumine Coffee was a delightful way to cap off the holiday weekend. Its vibrant atmosphere, delicious coffee, and delectable pastries provided the perfect space to connect, unwind, and savour simple pleasures.

Spicy Creamy Vegan Ramen from JINYA Ramen Bar

Happy Thursday! It's the last workday before a long weekend, and with Holy Week in full swing, I decided to observe a meatless Maundy Thursday. Thankfully, delicious options abound, and our company-paid lunch adventure took us to the nearby JINYA Ramen Bar.

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I'm always looking for exciting culinary experiences. Today's exploration led me to the Spicy Creamy Vegan Ramen. This vibrant bowl was a revelation – a symphony of flavours and textures that defied the myth that vegan food lacks depth. The rich vegetable broth formed a flavorful base, perfectly complemented by the tofu, green onion, spinach, crispy onion, garlic chips, garlic oil, chilli oil, and sesame seeds. Each element added a unique note to the overall taste profile, creating an exceptional experience. And let's not forget the thick noodles, which provided a satisfyingly chewy contrast to the soft vegetables and creamy broth.

This dish was a testament to the creativity and innovation in the vegan culinary world. It wasn't just "meatless food" – it was a delicious creation in its own right, bursting with flavour and texture. So, a big "yay" not just for this Holy Week discovery but for the entire world of vegan cuisine that continues to surprise and delight!

Caprese from Giovanne Caffe

Happy Wednesday! The workday was in full swing, and my focus was laser-sharp on the task at hand. Suddenly, a message from Mom popped up on my screen. She was downtown Vancouver, a stone's throw away from the office! We decided to head to the conveniently located Giovane Cafe, nestled in the lobby of my office building, for lunch. It was a perfect little oasis amidst the workday hustle.

Mocha from Giovanne Caffe

Over steaming cups of mocha, we reconnected. Mom opted for the Manzo, a symphony of flavours featuring rosemary balsamic roast beef, caciocavallo cheese, peppery arugula, and a touch of roasted garlic aioli.

As for me, my current culinary fixation – the Caprese – was a no-brainer. Fresh fior di latte cheese, vibrant basil pesto, and juicy Roma tomatoes – a classic combination that never disappoints. Every bite was a refreshing burst of flavour, a testament to the simplicity of good ingredients. Perhaps it's the vibrant colours, the perfect balance of textures, or the sheer deliciousness, but this Caprese addiction shows no signs of abating!

But beyond the delicious food, the true joy of this lunch break was the company. Stealing a moment to connect with Mom amidst the daily grind was a gift I cherished. We shared stories, laughed, and simply enjoyed each other's presence.

Bomboloni from Giovanne Caffe

Oh, and to top it all off, I couldn't resist indulging in a luscious bomboloni – a lovely ending to a perfect afternoon.

Spicy Big Mary Sandwich from Mary Brown's Chicken

Happy Sunday! My husband is back from his retreat, and to celebrate his return (and perhaps my slight chicken obsession!), I decided to order a finger-lickin feast from Mary Brown's Chicken.

Since the beginning of the year, I've embarked on a delicious journey through the world of fried chicken. From Church's and Popeyes to karaage and Taiwanese-style delights, I've savoured the unique flavours and textures each offer. Today, Mary Brown's was on the menu!

We opted for the 18-piece Signature Chicken, a fiery introduction to the Mary Brown's experience. And let me tell you, they weren't kidding about the spice! This chicken packed a serious punch, leaving a pleasant tingle in the taste buds. The crispy golden exterior gave way to juicy, flavorful chicken within. It was definitely hotter than anything I'd encountered at the major American fried chicken chains.

18 Pieces of Signature Chicken
Fresh chicken is hand-cut and breaded using Mary Brown's signature recipe.

I chose the classic comfort of the Big Mary Sandwich for my husband. This beauty boasted a juicy chicken breast, perfectly cooked and nestled between soft sesame seed buns. Mayo and lettuce added a touch of freshness, making it a satisfying and familiar favourite.

A whole Canada Grade A chicken breast, breaded in our Signature recipe, cooked golden brown, and served on a sesame bun with mayo and lettuce.

But for me, the Spicy Big Mary Sandwich was the star of the show. Mirroring the classic Big Mary, it featured a succulent chicken breast with the added kick of hot cayenne pepper. The result? An explosion of flavour that had my taste buds doing a happy dance. The creamy, spicy mayo and tangy pickles cut through the richness of the chicken perfectly, creating a symphony of textures and tastes in every bite.

And no Mary Brown's experience is complete without their famous taters. These crispy, golden potato wedges were the perfect sidekick to the juicy chicken, offering a delightful textural contrast and a touch of salty goodness.

From the fiery kick of the 18-piece Signature Chicken to the delightful balance of the Spicy Big Mary Sandwich, our Mary Brown's feast celebrated all things chicken. It was the perfect way to welcome my husband back and indulge in my current culinary fascination.

Suika's Signature Beef Curry with Tonkatsu

This weekend was a symphony of savoury spices and rich curries, a dream come true for any self-proclaimed curry aficionado like myself. It all began last Friday with a delightful Veggie Curry at Masa Japanese Restaurant. The vibrant mix of vegetables swimming in a flavorful curry base was a lovely vegetarian indulgence.

But the journey didn't end there. Yesterday, I ventured into uncharted territory, exploring the world of Soup Curry Garaku in Richmond. This unique take on the classic Japanese curry, with its brothy base and explosion of textures, was a revelation.

And today? Today was all about returning to a beloved favourite – Suika's Signature Beef Curry. For me, a beef curry base reigns supreme. Its richer flavour and deeper colour offer a taste sensation that chicken curries, with their milder nature, simply can't compete with.

Signature Beef Curry from Suika
Suika original stewed beef tendon curry topped with tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet) and karaage (deep fried chicken)

Suika truly is my happy place. Their Beef Curry is perfection in a bowl—aromatic, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. To elevate this culinary masterpiece even further, I opted for a double dose of deliciousness—a crispy Tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet) and some juicy Karaage (deep-fried chicken). The contrasting textures—the melt-in-your-mouth pork and the satisfying crunch of the chicken—added another layer of enjoyment to this already phenomenal dish.

As I left Suika, my stomach and heart were even fuller. This weekend was a testament to Japanese curry's versatility and sheer deliciousness. From the classic comfort of a veggie curry to the adventurous world of soup curry, and finally, the return to a familiar favourite at Suika, each experience was unique and unforgettable.

Coconut Dream Cheesecake from Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee

Happy Sunday! Today started with the usual routine. A quick stop at Tim Hortons for an everything bagel with cream cheese fueled my journey to Palm Sunday Mass. The service offered a moment of reflection and spiritual renewal, a perfect way to start the day.

With a peaceful heart and a rumbling stomach, I indulged in a sweet treat. Trees Cheesecake & Organic Coffee, a local favourite, beckoned with its promise of deliciousness and an empty spot where I could hang out. Knowing their reputation for monthly specials, I couldn't resist their Coconut Dream Cheesecake. The promise of a tropical escape in every bite was simply too tempting! I settled into a cozy corner, the cheesecake and a steaming cup of Hot Apple Cider my companions. The rich, creamy cheesecake, with its subtle coconut flavour and refreshing hint of lemon, was a delightful dance on my taste buds. The hot apple cider, warm and comforting, was the perfect complement, its sweet and spicy notes a perfect foil for the cheesecake's tropical vibes.

Fueled by this delicious interlude, I took a moment to catch up on some blog writing. But the day wasn't over yet! My ultimate destination, Suika (which, by the way, opens at 11:30 am!), awaited.

NYC Suprême from Lumiere Cafe

The fiery adventure at Soup Curry Garaku left a warm (and slightly spicy!) glow in its wake. Craving a sweet, relaxing counterpoint, I embarked on a coffee shop quest. Hopping on the Canada Line SkyTrain, I zipped back towards "home," disembarking at the Broadway City Centre station.

Hot Chocolate from Lumiere Cafe

Lumiere Cafe beckoned me in. While their hot chocolate offered a familiar warmth, it was the NYC Supr̻me that truly stole the show. This flaky pastry was a textural delight Рthe exterior boasted a croissant-like flakiness, giving way to a chewy, satisfying interior. But the real star was the filling. I opted for the matcha version, and it did not disappoint. The vibrant green filling delivered a decent matcha flavour, neither overpowering nor underwhelming. Delicate white chocolate sat atop this delightful creation, with a subtle hint of matcha for a cohesive flavour experience.

With pastry and coffee in hand, I settled in, laptop ready. However, the post-curry drowsiness proved to be an irresistible force. The siren song of sleep was too strong to ignore. So, I called it a day, boarded the bus home, and surrendered to a blissful two-hour nap (completely missing the Whitecaps game and their unfortunate loss!). While not the ending I had initially envisioned, it was a perfect example of embracing the unexpected.

Sometimes, the best adventures involve a little spice, a touch of sweetness, and a generous helping of rest. Until then, I'll cherish the memory of my solo day, filled with culinary discoveries and a much-needed recharge.

Unagi Don from Masa Japanese Restaurant

Happy Friday! While the weekend beckons with its promise of relaxation, a bittersweet note hangs in the air. I'm working from home today, but my husband attends a weekend retreat in Mission, BC. Before he departed, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Masa Japanese Restaurant, conveniently located nearby.

Being Friday and adhering to our Catholic beliefs, we opted for a pescetarian feast. My husband dove headfirst into the Unagi Don. This classic dish featured steamed rice as its foundation, the perfect canvas for the star of the show – a generous portion of BBQ sea eel. Japanese pickles added a delightful tangy counterpoint.

Veggie Curry from Masa Japanese Restaurant

I gravitated towards my favourite—the Veggie Curry. This comforting dish showcased my love for Japanese curry in all its glory. Assorted vegetables—a vibrant medley of broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and mushrooms—swam in a rich, flavorful curry sauce.

However, only a Japanese dining experience is complete with a shared appetizer; ours was no exception. We opted for the assorted tempura, a symphony of crispy perfection. Four juicy prawns sported a light and airy tempura batter, while four pieces of yam (sweet potato) offered a delightful sweetness. Even the lone piece of tempura broccoli held its own, its slightly bitter flavour adding a surprising complexity to the mix. Each piece was a textural delight, the light and crispy batter giving way to tender, cooked-through vegetables within.

Buffalo Breaded Shrimp Cajun Caesar Wrap from Leopold's Tavern

Happy Thursday! Fueled by the spiritual renewal of the Lord's Supper Mass, we decided to extend our date night with a delicious dinner at Leopold's Tavern. The Vancouver Canucks game flickered on the screens, adding a touch of excitement to the atmosphere.

With a spirit of meatless observation, I opted for the vegetarian nachos. This mountain of goodness offered a symphony of textures and flavours. Crispy chips, melted cheese, a vibrant pico de gallo, and crisp onions formed a delicious base. Pickled jalapenos added a touch of heat, while peppers and olives offered pops of colour and briny complexity. A dollop of guacamole provided a creamy counterpoint, and the accompanying salsa and sour cream were perfect for dipping adventures. Every bite was an explosion of flavour and texture, making these nachos a true vegetarian delight.

Meanwhile, my husband, a dedicated carnivore, reveled in the Cajun Caesar wrap. This flavor bomb featured buffalo breaded shrimp – a crispy and satisfying protein element. Romaine lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and melty mozzarella cheese added freshness and richness. Onions, parmesan cheese, and a creamy creole Caesar dressing tied everything together, creating a familiar and exciting flavour profile.

As we cheered alongside the Canucks, it was a perfect way to unwind and reconnect before the weekend arrived. Leopold's Tavern provided the ideal setting for a date night filled with good food, good company, and a touch of sports excitement.

Waffles and Chocolate Fondue at Nero Waffles

The workday was in full swing when my phone rang. It was Michaels, and their call brought a wave of relief - our custom framing project for the office was finally complete and ready for pick-up! After what felt like an eternity (though, in reality, it was probably just a couple of weeks), the wait was over.

Eager to get these masterpieces, I raced to Michaels after work. But what awaited me wasn't a single, manageable frame – it was two! And let me tell you, these weren't your average picture frames. These were substantial, impressive works of art – big, bold, and surprisingly heavy.

A quick call to my ever-supportive husband confirmed my suspicions. Dragging these bad boys home and then back to the office the next day wasn't exactly an appealing prospect. His solution? A much more straightforward, one-trip approach – head straight to the office! So, with a game plan in place, I waited for him at Michaels, and together, we Ubered to the office, our precious cargo safely secured.

With the successful delivery of the frames, a sense of accomplishment washed over us. But the day wasn't quite over yet. Our stomachs, rumbling after a busy day, demanded attention. As we started our walk home, the familiar aroma of deliciousness stopped us in our tracks. On Seymour Street stood Nero Waffles – a haven we'd admired from afar on countless walks, forever deterred by the long lines snaking out the door.

But today, our luck has changed! The line was non-existent, beckoning us like a sweet, syrupy siren song. We seized the opportunity, eager to finally indulge in Nero Waffles' famed creations.

Date Night at Nero Waffles

My husband opted for the Ham Benedict. A fluffy Brussels waffle – light and crisp, thanks to their special cast-iron magic – served as the base for this delightful dish. Layers of prosciutto cotto (Italian rosemary ham) added a touch of savoury richness while two perfectly poached eggs awaited their glorious reveal. The crowning touch? A house-made hollandaise sauce, its creamy decadence ties everything together.

As for me, the memory of the epic BBQ poutine from Memphis Blues BBQ still lingered, leaving me in a state of happy satiety. So, I decided to explore a lighter option Рthe new chocolate fondue. This decadent creation featured a basket overflowing with teeny-tiny Li̬ge waffles. Imagine bite-sized pillows of fluffy, sweet dough studded with caramelized pearl sugar. These miniature masterpieces were joined by a vibrant cast of characters Рfresh fruits, plump marshmallows, and the star of the show, Callebaut dark chocolate. This limited-time indulgence is a must-try available only from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. With each dip and each bite, a wave of pure chocolate bliss washed over me.

As we savoured our waffles (because, let's face it, in the pancake vs waffle battle, waffles reign supreme! #TeamWaffle), we couldn't help but smile. This impromptu stop at Nero Waffles perfectly ended a busy day. It was an unexpected delight, a moment of pure indulgence shared with the love of my life. So next time you find yourself craving something sweet, take a chance, explore the unexpected, and you might just discover your own little slice of waffle heaven.

BBQ Poutine from Memphis Blues BBQ

Happy Thursday! As the familiar aroma of deliciousness wafted through the air, we knew it was time for another company-paid team lunch! This week, the power was placed firmly in my hands – I, the winner of the competition question, held the glorious responsibility of choosing where to eat.

With a plethora of culinary options in mind, I opted for BBQ! Now, for those familiar with the pre-2018 Vancouver landscape, the name Memphis Blues BBQ might spark a pang of nostalgia. This local favourite used to grace Broadway (between Hemlock and Granville) with its smoky goodness, but their location met its demise. Thankfully, the flame (and the flavour!) lives on at their Robson Street branch, a convenient two-minute walk from the office.

However, with a global team comes the challenge of catering to diverse palates. While BBQ is a beloved cuisine in many parts of the world, variations abound. So, to ensure each office had an easy time choosing, I sent out a message: "Please order whichever BBQ style is most convenient for you."

BBQ Poutine from Memphis Blues BBQ
Not a specialty in Memphis! Pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and cheese over fries

Our Melbourne colleagues leaned towards the familiar comfort of Chinese-style BBQ, emphasizing succulent duck dishes. Our team in Cork, on the other hand, chose an American-style BBQ spot.

With this knowledge, I embraced the "go local" approach and stuck with Memphis Blues. Thankfully, upon arrival, the normally bustling restaurant was relatively empty, allowing us to settle in comfortably and enjoy quality team bonding time.

BBQ Poutine from Memphis Blues BBQ

As for my meal choice, I opted for the classic BBQ Poutine. This Canadian twist on a comfort food staple features a bed of deliciously crispy fries smothered in a generous portion of pulled pork. A blanket of melty cheese and a drizzle of their signature BBQ sauce tied everything together in a symphony of textures and flavours. It was, quite simply, food coma-inducing in the best way possible!

Savoury Chili WcDonald's Sauce from McDonald's Canada

Happy Wednesday! Sometimes, a busy day calls for a classic comfort food fix. And for me today, that meant a trip to none other than McDonald's. My usual order of large fries and a 10-piece Chicken McNugget combo was a familiar friend, but this time, I decided to add a touch of adventure – the new Savory Chili WcDonald's Sauce!

10-piece Chicken Nuggets and Savoury Chili WcDonald’s Sauce* from McDonald's

Intrigued by the name and the limited-time-only buzz, I took the plunge. One dip in, and my taste buds were doing a happy dance! The sauce offered a surprising complexity beyond your average fast-food condiment. The first wave was a delightful sweetness reminiscent of a good stir-fry sauce. But then came the subtle heat, a gentle kick from the chilli flakes that built gradually without overpowering the other flavours.

As I savoured each bite, I couldn't help but be reminded of another culinary favourite – ginger beef sauce. The familiar notes of soy sauce and garlic peeked through, creating a comforting savoury base that echoed the classic Chinese dish.

Chicken nuggets dipped in Savoury Chili WcDonald’s Sauce from McDonal's

Now, this might be the Filipino in me talking, but I couldn't help but imagine how delicious this sauce would be drizzled over a steaming bowl of rice. The sweet, savoury, and spicy symphony would be an absolute winner!

Whether you're a dipping aficionado or simply looking for a new and exciting way to elevate your McDonald's experience, I highly recommend trying the Savory Chili WcDonald's Sauce. It's a limited-time offering, so grab it while you can! You can discover your new favourite fast-food flavour adventure.

Avocado Croissant sandwich from Bisou

Happy Wednesday! The hustle and bustle of the work week was in full swing, and this morning, breakfast completely flew under the radar. By the time I hopped off the bus stop downtown, my stomach was already grumbling in protest. But fear not, fellow busy bees, for a happy (and delicious!) solution awaited!

As I walked towards the office, a charming little coffee shop nestled within Telus Gardens caught my eye – Bisou. The name itself whispered promises of delightful treats, and the inviting display of baked goods in the window confirmed those suspicions. However, with a savoury craving, I bypassed the sweet temptations and set my sights on something more substantial.

Avocado Croissant sandwich from Bisou

Enter the avocado croissant sandwich. A flaky, buttery croissant with a golden exterior promising a warm and inviting embrace. Nestled within was the star of the show – creamy avocado, its richness a perfect counterpoint to the flaky pastry. But the flavour symphony didn't end there. A slice of white cheese added a touch of tang, while fresh tomato slices and spinach provided bursts of colour and freshness. The finishing touch? A hint of pesto, its herbal aroma, and its nutty flavour tie everything together in delightful harmony.

So, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, rushing to work with an empty stomach, take a moment to seek out a gem like Bisou. You might just discover a breakfast (or snack!) hero that turns your day around, one delicious bite at a time!

Bento Boxes from Sushi Tendo

Happy Friday! After a long week working from home, I decided to shake things up and join a last-minute meetup organized by Tech2Step. This innovative group organizes networking walks along the scenic Seawall, starting at Science World. It's a fantastic way to connect with fellow tech professionals, all while enjoying the beauty of the Vancouver waterfront.

The walk itself was a delightful mix of networking and reminiscing. As I chatted with a couple of Filipino immigrants who were new to Canada and looking for work opportunities, I couldn't help but be reminded of my own journey. Memories of my initial struggles upon arriving in Canada and navigating the job search resurfaced – a bittersweet reminder of how far I've come.

With a heart full of emotions and legs that had enjoyed a good workout, my husband and I ended the evening with a delicious (and light!) dinner. Sushi Tendo on Cambie Street beckoned, and we happily obliged.

Now, being a Friday during Lent presented a slight challenge. However, Sushi Tendo offered a perfect solution – various delectable options that adhered to our fasting restrictions.

For a shared appetizer, we opted for the assorted tempura. This came with a generous portion of four juicy prawns and four pieces of mixed vegetables, all cloaked in a tempura batter that was slightly oilier than anticipated. Despite the somewhat heavier batter, the star of the show remained the perfectly cooked shrimp and vegetables – fresh, flavorful, and a delightful prelude to the main course.

For my main event, I selected the Bento D. A dynamite roll added a touch of spice, while the salmon and tuna sashimi were melt-in-your-mouth fresh. The salmon teriyaki on rice provided a comforting savoury element, completing the bento experience perfectly.

Hubby opted for the Bento E. This feast for the eyes (and the stomach!) included four pieces of nigiri sushi – a vibrant selection of salmon, tuna, shrimp (ebi), and hokkigai (surf clam). Three pieces of takoyaki (octopus dumplings) offered a textural contrast, while the unagi (BBQ eel) on rice added a touch of smoky sweetness.

Both bento boxes came with a refreshing miso soup and a crisp salad, the perfect complement to the main dishes. It was a light yet satisfying meal, ideal for a post-walk dinner and a reminder that deliciousness doesn't have to be heavy.

As we continued our walk home, our conversation flowed freely – a testament to the power of a shared experience and the joy of good company. I felt a deep sense of gratitude – for the blessing of a supportive husband, fulfilling work, and the peaceful city and country we now call home. Evenings like this, filled with connection, delicious food, and appreciation, are the ones I cherish most.

Nachos, Burger, and Fries from Romer's

Fueled by a delicious Pi Day celebration with a slice of The Pie Hole's magic (see previous post!), it was time to catch up with family. Across the street awaited Romer's, a familiar haunt with memories of past lunches with former colleagues. The company was even better tonight – my sister, her boyfriend, and the promise of a fun-filled evening.

As the conversation flowed, we delved into work and careers. My sister's boyfriend shared some work-related challenges, and we offered a listening ear and words of encouragement. Hopefully, the evening's camaraderie provided a much-needed boost!

For me, Romer's held a special significance. This place was a monthly ritual with my old team, a haven of delicious burgers and good times. It had been over five years since my last visit, and a pang of nostalgia hit me as I scanned the menu. Naturally, my eyes gravitated toward my old favourite – the Magic Mushroom burger.

The Magic Mushroom was once my go-to comfort food. The combination of caramelized onions, a juicy Portobello mushroom, creamy Boursin cheese, peppery arugula, and a touch of olive oil aioli used to be a symphony of flavours. Sadly, tonight's rendition fell a bit short. While the ingredients were all there, the magic spark seemed to be missing. It wasn't quite as flavorful or satisfying as I remembered.

Despite the slight burger letdown, the rest of the meal was a resounding success. The Big Basket of Fries lived up to its name. These weren't your average limp fries – these were hand-cut on-site, boasting a satisfying crispness and a flavour that only fresh potatoes can deliver. To elevate them to another level, I opted for the garlic fries upgrade, a decision I definitely didn't regret. The added garlicky punch was a perfect complement to the salty richness of the fries.

The real showstopper, however, was the Nachos Valentina for Two. Imagine a mountain of crispy tortilla chips (fried in-house, no less!) smothered in a blanket of spicy cheese. A vibrant medley of jalapenos, olives, and green onions added a delightful mix of textures and flavours. The Valentina sauce provided a welcome kick, while the chipotle aioli offered a smoky counterpoint.

While the burger may not have lived up to past glories, the overall experience was heartwarming. There's something extraordinary about sharing good food and good company with loved ones. Laughter, conversation, and the comfort of familiar surroundings make evenings like this truly unforgettable.

Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Cream Pie from The Pie Hole | Pi Day 2024

Pi Day (3.14) is a celebration near and dear to our hearts and stomachs! My husband and I have a long-standing tradition of marking this mathematical marvel with a delicious slice of pie. Last year, we revelled in a juicy peach pie; the year before, we opted for a savoury pizza (because, hey, pie comes in all shapes and sizes, right?), and the memories keep stacking up.

This year, we decided to commemorate Pi Day with a visit to The Pie Hole in Kitsilano. Little did we know, it was their last day at this location before their big move to West Broadway and Balaclava Street! Talk about perfect timing (or a touch of destiny). We eagerly stepped inside, ready to choose our Pi Day pie.

Unfortunately, the post-work rush left them with a single sweet pie option—the Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Cream Pie. Intrigued by the unique combination, we decided to take a chance. Let's just say it was a risk that paid off in the most delectable way!

The pie boasted a pressed crust with a surprising blend of hazelnuts, coconut, and oats. The coconut flavour was surprisingly prominent, even though it wasn't visually apparent. This unique crust offered a delightful textural contrast – a satisfying crumble giving way to a hint of chewiness.

A pressed crust of hazelnuts, coconut, and oats (GF) and a creamy chocolate filling topped with vegan whip and toasted coconut ribbons.

But the real star of the show was the creamy chocolate filling. Imagine a smooth, rich, decadent concoction that melted in your mouth with every bite. A dollop of vegan whip added a touch of lightness, while toasted coconut ribbons provided a delightful textural surprise and a subtle sweetness that perfectly complemented the chocolate. Each spoonful was a symphony, an ode to deliciousness and a tribute to Pi Day.

Happy Thursday! It is time for another company-paid team lunch! This week's theme celebrated the humble spud – the mighty potato! In true team spirit, we walked to the nearby Original Joe's in Robson, eager to explore their potato-centric offerings.

Staying true to the theme, I opted for a Canadian classic – the poutine. There's nothing quite like a poutine to satisfy a potato craving. Crispy golden fries formed the base, each bite offering a satisfying crunch. Then came the magic – a generous layer of melted cheese curds, their creamy texture and mild flavour, the perfect foil for the salty fries.

I opted for the pulled pork topping to add a bit of protein punch. My vision was a delightful, sweet, and savoury combination. However, the pulled pork arrived unadorned, devoid of any sauce I had anticipated. It was simply shredded pork, relying solely on the rich, flavorful gravy for moisture.

While the poutine wasn't quite the explosion of flavour I envisioned, it was still a hearty and comforting dish. The gravy was the star of the show – a savoury concoction that tied everything together. Each bite was a delightful combination of textures: the crispness of the fries, the gooeyness of the cheese curds, and the tender chew of the pulled pork.

When we finished our lunches, a contented silence filled the table. Let's just say our "food coma" hit hard upon returning to our desks! But isn't that what team lunches are all about—good food, good company, and a little post-lunch snooze (I fought really hard and found ways to keep myself awake and productive)? Despite the slight letdown on the pulled pork, it was still a fun-filled afternoon celebrating the spud and fostering team spirit.

Prosciutto and Bocconcini Focaccia from Lovelarte

Happy Wednesday! Today was anything but ordinary - it was brinner day! For those unfamiliar with this glorious portmanteau, it combines breakfast and dinner into one epic meal. But this wasn't your average solo pajana-clas feast. Today's brinner was a virtual company-wide celebration, a way to connect with our colleagues across time zones.

Since our company has offices in Vancouver, Melbourne, and Cork, mealtimes get a little interesting. Our breakfast in Vancouver meant early dinner for our team in Cork! We kicked things off with some fun St. Patrick's Day trivia - the laughter and friendly competition setting a lively tone for the morning.

After the virtual merriment, it was time for breakfast! My colleague and I walked to nearby Lovelarte.

I chose the Prosciutto and Bocconcini Focaccia sandwich. This beauty boasted layers of thinly sliced prosciutto, its rich, salty flavour a perfect counterpoint to the creamy, melt-in-your-moth bocconcini mozzarella. Slices of juicy red tomat added a burst of freshness, while the peppery arugula offered a delight bite. But the treu star of the show was the basil pesto sauce. The nutty richness tired everything together!

To complement this savory masterpiece, I opted for a small mocha. The rich, cocoa-y notes of the espresso blended beautifully with the creamy sweetness of the steamed milk, creating a warm and comforting drink that perfectly balanced the boldness of the sandwich.

Overall, it was a fantastic start to the day. The virtual fun with colleagues, the delicious brinner from Lovelarte, and the feeling of connection that transcended time zones – it all came together to create a truly memorable Wednesday!

Boston's Lasagna from Boston Pizza

Our delightful Sunday at Waves Coffee House continued with a playful debate – cook at home or venture out for dinner? Knowing I was still basking in the afterglow of the Caprese sandwich (who could blame me?), hubby gallantly suggested we eat out, sparing me from kitchen duty. With that settled, Boston Pizza became our destination.

Still feeling the effects of that fantastic sandwich, I opted for a familiar favourite: the Cactus Cuts. These crispy, golden-fried delights are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, and tonight was no exception. Each bite offered a satisfying crunch followed by a soft middle. A touch of dipping sauce added the perfect finishing touch.

Meanwhile, hubby embarked on a mission to conquer Boston Pizza's extensive menu. I suggested exploring the pasta section to help him navigate the vast options. Intrigued by the namesake Boston's Lasagna, he decided to take the plunge.

This dish turned out to be a revelation! Imagine layers of perfectly cooked lasagna noodles swimming in a rich and meaty Bolognese sauce. Creamy mozzarella cheese added a touch of indulgence, while a final flourish of freshly grated Parmesan provided a delightful savoury note.

I never thought I'd be the one raving about a non-pizza item at Boston Pizza. But here we are! This lasagna was a testament to their culinary versatility, proving that deliciousness extends far beyond their classic pies. Hubby's satisfied smile and my empty plate were all the evidence we needed.

Now, with happy bellies and a heart full of Sunday Funday memories, we can't wait to return to Boston Pizza. Next time, we'll delve deeper into their enticing pasta world, venturing beyond the namesake dish.
