Dinner at Dublin Crossing Irish Pub

We went to see Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (go see it!) this evening. Before the movie, we decided to have dinner at Dublin Crossing Irish Pub because it's one of the only two places in the area that we haven't tried.

I believe it's my first time at an Irish Pub (or Irish restaurant), and of course, we chose food from the "Irish Fare" section, which has four choices: Bangers and Mash, St. Patrick's Irish Stew, Stuffed Yorkshires Pudding, and Cottage Pie.

Yorkshire Pudding

It's a no brainer for me, I got the Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding. I fell in love with this dish when I tried it from The Wicklow. This version served two large Yorkshires (bread) stuffed with roast beef, horseradish sour cream, and beef gravy. They serve it with garlic mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables on the side. Meanwhile, the version from The Wicklow is the same set of ingredients, but the mashed potatoes are inside the Yorkshire.

Personally, the Yorkshire itself is better from Dublin Crossing, but the beef and gravy of The Wicklow are better. I'm glad to have found a second place that serves Yorkshire Pudding.

Bangers and Mash

Hubby picked the Bangers and Mash from the Irish Fare section of the menu. It came with two traditional style sausages with caramelized onions and beef gravy. It was served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Honestly, it's hard to screw up sausages, so I kinda wished hubby picked either the stew or cottage pie. Well, two more reasons to come back!

Reuben Sandwich from PICA

Growing up in the Philippines, I am not familiar with "Reuben Sandwich." However, when I moved to Canada and started having lunch at Blue Hat Bakery, I met "Reuben Sandwich." It's the meatiest and yummiest sandwich ever.

Blue Hat Bakery has many sandwiches that use different types of meat:

  • Reuben Sandwich uses corned beef (not the canned kind I grew up with)
  • Roast Beef Sandwich obviously uses beef
  • Chicken BLT Sandwich with avocado uses chicken and bacon
  • Ham and Cheese Sandwich uses ham
My favourite was chicken BLT because the avocado adds that extra creamy fat, but they use less of it now, so I tried the Reuben, and I couldn't move on from it. I should give the ham and cheese a try next.

Be sure to try the Reuben Sandwich (ask them to warm it up) and let me know what you think!

Lunch at The Ouisi Bistro

This morning I read this article from Vancouver is Awesome about a couple of restaurants closing in our neighbourhood of South Granville. For a couple of years, we have been living a block away from Granville Street, and we have tried a lot of restaurants nearby.

However, more places we love will close, especially along Broadway between Granville and Hemlock. The location of the new train station is going to force close more than five different restaurants in that strip alone. The goal now is to support these small businesses until the time they have to leave.

For lunch today, we decided to eat at The Ouisi Bistro. We were greeted by their hospitable and friendly servers, and we enjoyed warm comfort food while it rains outside.

Jambalaya (smoked ham, sausage, four prawns, & rice)

The Jambalaya is delicious and comforting like a mother's hug. But the Chicken Bayou Burger is such a pleasant surprise of yumminess.

I am sad to see this place close.

Update: This location is now occupied by The Breakfast Table.
