Taiwanese Soy Sponge Cake from Soy Talk

After a fun and food coma dinner at Gang Nam Korean BBQ, we had 30 minutes to spare before our karaoke dinner. We started looking for an ice cream place nearby. Don't judge us for wanting ice cream when it's below 10 degrees Celsius outside. 🤣

Our search led us to Soy Talk. Unfortunately, there's a sign on the cashier that ice cream is unavailable. It's not meant to be.

My younger sister bought Taiwanese Soy Sponge Cake for us to share. Thanks, Sister!

Taiwanese Soy Sponge Cake
Freshly handmade with pure natural ingredients, our sponge cake is sprinkled with healthy organic soybean floss. Fluffy in texture, our spongecake is sandwiched with a light milky soy sauce.

The cake was fluffy and soft, while the soybean floss provided crunch and the cream in the middle added a subtle sweetness. It's such a nice dessert and would be lovely with coffee or tea.

Korean BBQ Dinner at Gang Nam Korean BBQ

Happy Friday! I'm finally able to celebrate my birthday with my siblings. So naturally, I want a Korean BBQ, and we end up at Gang Nam Korean BBQ in Richmond, BC.

I ordered a lot, but it's enough for our party of six.

BBQ Dinner Combo I and G

I ordered BBQ Dinner Combo I, which includes pork belly, pork jowl, and pork bulgogi and BBQ Dinner Combo G which has rib eye, pork belly, GN bulgogi, and pork bulgogi. Unfortunately, I only took a picture of our raw meat once and didn't have a photo of any of the marinated meat.

Each combo gets a choice of a stone bowl and either pajeon (seafood pancake) or japchae.

Japchae as part of our BBQ Dinner Combo

This is my favourite japchae from all the Korean restaurants in Vancouver that I have tried.

Fried Gyoza

You can skip the gyoza and order the Fried Chicken instead. Unfortunately, I missed taking the photo of the Fried Chicken that we ordered. My youngest sister loved it.

Overall, the food is delicious, albeit expensive. The service was friendly and prompt, especially for a small, busy restaurant.

Chinese Donuts, Buns, and Cookies from Kam Do Bakery

Kam Do!!!

Okay. That's what I usually exclaim when I see Kam Do Bakery. It is my favourite Asian bakery in Metro Vancouver.

Beautiful Exterior of Kam Do Bakery

When I first arrived in Canada, my mom would bring some of their baked goodies home, and I fell in love with the Chinese Donuts.

As I became more cashless, buying from Kam Do was too much of a hassle because they WERE cash only.

Today, as we were walking from Aberdeen Skytrain Station to Gang Nam Korean BBQ, we stopped by Kam Do, and I prayed that they now accept credit cards. Unfortunately, they still don't, but they now have debit! Yay! *Happy Dance*

My Kam Do Haul

There were only four Chinese Donuts left, and I grabbed them all. It's as good as I remember - fried dough dusted with sugar. The inside is also airy.

Four Chinese Donuts

A peek inside Chinese Donuts. Look at that airy pockets. Yum!

Walking around, I spotted the Sausage Buns. We usually get this from T&T, so I can compare the two. T&T uses better hotdogs, or maybe the one from Kam Do was just overcooked. Focusing on the bread portion - the Sausage Buns from T&T are sweeter than Kam Do.

I also ordered cookies, and they're perfect with coffee. They're not overly sweet, and they're pretty crumbly. I love it.

The last things we grabbed were the Beef Curry Buns and Pork BBQ Buns. This is my first time trying them, and I am uncertain of what to expect.

I usually don't have any reason to go to this side of Richmond so visiting Kam Do is a rare happy occurrence. Thank God for the continuous provisions and for my husband, who constantly supports my food whims and adventures.

Taiwanese Pork Chop with Fried Rice for dinner from Typhoon Bubble Tea Cafe

Typhoon Bubble Tea Cafe is located in the Cambie Plaza strip mall in Richmond. I remember noticing them five years ago when I still live with my parents. Unfortunately, they are cash only, and I don't carry cash.

This is what I ordered for dinner from Typhoon Bubble Tea Cafe.

We visited my siblings in Richmond today, and our youngest sister requested that we order from Typhoon because she wants rice. So, of course, I am more than happy to oblige since I love Taiwanese cuisine, and as expected, I ordered a lot for my husband and me to share.

Typhoon House Special Chicken Nuggets

We ordered chicken nuggets for sharing, which was a good bite-size fried chicken.

Taiwanese Sausage with Rice and Sides

We love Taiwanese Sausage, but this one is not as sweet as I am used to when ordering from other Taiwanese restaurants.

Taiwanese Pork Chop with Fried Rice

The fried rice is exceptionally flavorful and delicious. It's the best thing tonight and works well with anything. I didn't expect the pork chop to be as it is. The flavour was good, but I expected it to have the same level of seasoning as the chicken nuggets.

Taiwanese Style Plain Noodles with Bean Sprouts and Meat Sauce in Soup

Other than the fried rice, the best thing tonight is the soup. It's a warm, clean broth that's comforting to the soul. But, unfortunately, the delicious broth couldn't save the plain noodle and bean sprouts.

I can't wait to try the soup with beef. I bet it'll be delicious.

High Rise Pancakes for lunch at Eggspectation Richmond

Our youngest sister works at Eggspectation in Richmond, BC, so after practicing our civic duty in voting and participating in the local election. We went straight to Eggspectation for lunch.

I have a list of menu items we have and have not tried and picked based on that. My sister was the one who brought our food to the table, and she mentioned that she made sure they looked pretty for my picture.

High Rise Pancakes
Kick-start your day with a mighty stack of pancakes with sausages, bacon, and potatoes layered between them and top with a sunny-side-up egg.

Top-view of the High Rise Pancakes

Inside view of the High Rise Pancakes

I am surprised at how much I love the High Rise Pancakes from Eggspectation. With the syrup drizzled all over, it's the perfect sweet and savoury breakfast to kick start any day.

Classic Benedict
Two perfectly poached eggs on smoked ham and a toasted English muffin, topped with our famous hollandaise sauce and our Lyonnaise-style potatoes

I love eggs benny, and since I already tried the Smoked Salmon Benny (my go-to in any breakfast spot) and Montreal Benny (because it sounds interesting), I had to try the Classic. I am pleased to report that the egg is perfectly poached this time.

For drinks, we enjoyed their freshly squeezed orange juice, and yes, they are genuinely orange. My sister told us during her first week that one of the first things she has to learn is to squeeze orange to make their OJ.

Breakfast Wrap from Green Bean Cafe in Vancouver International Airport (YVR) Domestic

Good morning! I woke up at 2:00 AM for our 6:00 AM flight to Toronto.

We did our routine and were out of our home at 3:30 AM. We're past security before 5:00 AM, and Green Bean Cafe is the only food option available after security.

I ordered the sausage breakfast wrap, ham breakfast wrap, and two orange juices from Green Bean Cafe.

Green Bean Cafe near gate B14 is the only food source open before 5:00 AM after security.

Breakfast Wrap with Ham from Green Bean Cafe

Breakfast Wrap with Sausage from Green Bean Cafe

My order came to a total of $35.69 which is higher than expected, but it is what it is. The food was decent, nothing to rave about but enough to fuel you for a flight.

I wrote this post on the plane and published it while waiting for the Union Pearson Express (UP) to leave Terminal 1. Please forgive any typos, misspellings, and grammar mistakes. I will edit this again when we get to the hotel.

Thanksgiving Lunch at Home

Happy Thanksgiving! We're celebrating a week early with my siblings because my husband and I are going on vacation next week (during Thanksgiving Long weekend).

I thought we would just eat out and order a turkey. Still, my younger sister wanted to cook turkey and all the sides that are usually a part of a Thanksgiving meal; mashed potatoes, green bean casserole (so good!), stuffing (prepared by my sister's boyfriend), gravy, and cranberry sauce. We (hubby and I) purchased pecan and pumpkin pie from Whole Foods to complete the meal.

Thanksgiving Lunch was prepared by my younger sister.

After lunch, we played Smash Bros (like last week) and had fun. The trash talking was hilarious. I love my siblings and enjoy spending time with them. I can't wait to see them again next month for my birthday. They requested we do karaoke.

Dinner from Boston Pizza

Happy Saturday! Our only brother resigned from his first full-time job and will start his new work on Monday. To celebrate his freedom from his old company, we decided to have beer, cocktails, pizza, and dessert at their home. We watched Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars then played Smash Bros. on the Nintendo Switch. We also worked together to clean up afterwards because there was no Mama to clean after us.

Dinner from Boston Pizza

Since we're craving pizza, we had it delivered from Boston Pizza alongside two of their appetizers and a pasta which I didn't take a picture of.

Classic Nachos

Bandera Pizza Bread

Pepperoni

The Meateor

I love my siblings and more so now that we're all adults. We ordered what seemed like insufficient food, but we even had leftovers! We also shared the bill equally, and my younger sister commented that I don't think we will have any money problems in the future since you guys pay your share quickly. She's right, and I pray that God continues to bless us physically, spiritually, emotionally, and financially!

Drinks from Estea Express at Aberdeen Food Court

After enjoying our meal from J&G Fried Chicken and Hich Persian Cuisine, we decided to grab drinks from Estea Express. I had my favourite Green Apple while hubby enjoyed his Matcha Red Bean slush.

Matcha Red Bean Slush from Estea Express

Green Tea from Estea Express

It's such a happy food day. After lunch, we walked around Oomomo, then to Lansdowne Centre to buy beer and vodka for our celebration tonight.

Lunch from Hich Persian Cuisine at Aberdeen Food Court

Since I grew up eating rice, I needed it to fully enjoy my chicken from J&G Fried Chicken, so we ordered a Soltani Kabob with rice from Hich Persian Cuisine. I am so grateful that my husband noticed the Dolmades. I wrote and raved about this dish when we went to the Riley Park Summer Farmers Market. So I am pleased to see and eat it here!

Soltani Kabob
1 Skewer Barg (AAA filet mignon) and 1 skewer of ground beef kabob served with saffron rice

Dolmades
Grape leaves roll stuffed with rice and herbs.

The rice is good, and the skewers were excellent, but the real star is the dolmades. It's a great palate cleanser when you've had enough (or too much) meat. It's like a reset button on your taste buds so they can go back to enjoying all the flavours. It's so delicious!

Lunch from J&G Fried Chicken at Aberdeen Food Court

Happy Saturday! After running errands all morning, we find ourselves at Aberdeen Centre food court shortly before two in the afternoon for late lunch. I'm famished and ordered a lot!

Popcorn Chicken and Fired Chicken Cutlet from J&G Fried Chicken

As soon as you get off the escalator, the first stall you will see is J&G Fried Chicken.

Signature Popcorn Chicken

The Signature Popcorn Chicken reminds me of the one from Big G. There's a subtle sweet aftertaste.

Deep Fried Big Chicken Cutlet (Bone-in)

I wish the cutlet was served with rice and pickled vegetables on the side, and it would be the perfect meal.

I still prefer the popcorn chicken from Redbeef Noodle.

My husband and I are travelling to Toronto next month. It's our first flight since our wedding in the Philippines last 2019. Our flight is at 6:00 AM, so I am looking at where we can grab breakfast before our flight.

Food Adventure at the Richmond Night Market

Happy Friday (or the wee morning of Saturday)! It's Labour Day weekend which means no work on Monday. So to start the long weekend, we decided (last minute) to head to the Richmond Night Market.

After work (5:00 PM), we grabbed groceries at No Frills. Then, we went home to drop off our groceries. Afterwards, we returned three books I borrowed from the library, then we rode Bus 99. Before entering the Canada Line station, we stopped by RBC to get some cash for the Richmond Night Market. Then, we entered Broadway City Hall Station and took the train to Bridgeport Station.

We're starting our long weekend at the Richmond Night Market.

From there, we walked to the Richmond Night Market. We went straight to the sign where it said Zoom Pass Entrance Only. Before we reached the entrance, a family of four asked us if we would get a Zoom pass. We said yes, and they asked if we wanted to be part of their party of six, and we paid them $12.00 for it. Not a bad deal.

Zoom Pass Entrance

A Zoom Pass would be like buying six tickets (meaning we'll be able to come back multiple times or share it with others) OR if you're a group of six, you can enter all at once, which we did.

Thank God that we got there at that time and the family saw us. I hope they had as much fun as we did.

We went straight to the food stalls to look at all the food options, and there were plenty. The last time I was at RNM was July 2016 with my sisters, and I remember it being packed, so in my mind, I wanted to get food that I wanted to try while there was still no lineup.

Takoyaki

I remember seeing two (maybe three) stalls selling takoyaki, and we purchased the octopus one. They have different possible fillings for their takoyaki, like scallops, shrimp, bacon, or mushroom.

Takoyaki

One of the two (or maybe three) Takoyaki stalls

Fish Sticks

My favourite item we had tonight was the fish sticks. Its crispy outside and delicately soft white meat inside were mindblowing, and it's pretty easy to eat while walking around.

The fish sticks are inspired by the fried fish cakes in Taiwan, and one of my favourite Taiwanese food items is the salt & pepper popcorn chicken. If you can't decide which flavour to get, Salt & Pepper is still the best. Halfway through the Fish Stick, I wanted vinegar to dip it in like fish & chips.

Teri Mayo Fish Sticks

Chendol Icy

After the fried fish, I wanted something to drink, and plenty of stalls focused on drinks. So when I spotted Chendol from the Icy Bar (Van-City #1 Taiwanese Shaved Ice), I just had to get it.

We had Chendol once in Singapore, and I will forever remember it. It's like Filipino halo-halo but with fewer ingredients, meaning it's drinkable.

Chendol Icy from Icy Bar

Top 10 Popular

We walked around to see the rest of the stalls and spotted the "Top 10 Popular September 2022" in at far left corner when you entered (near the Rotato). Hubby doubted if a metric was used to create the list or if the vendors paid for a spot. Either way, that list helps.

Top 10 Popular September 2022 in Richmond Night Market

When walking around and seeing so many options makes you undecided, I recommend checking the list and using it as a guide on what to get. That's what we did, and we have no regrets.

Xinjiang Style Lamb Bun

After seeing the list, we went straight to Chef James Xin Jiang Man and ordered one Xinjiang-Style Lamb Bun. The smell of cumin and tenderness of the perfectly cooked lamb is mindblowing. The lamb is chewy and a perfect match for the soft and tender pillowy buns. Where can I get this year-round?

Xinjiang Style Lamb Bun

Chef James Xin Jiang Man

Matcha Mochi Donut

Another food on the list is the Mochi Donut from Mochido, and we got the matcha. The inside was chewier than what you would expect from a typical donut. Also, the dough seems different (one way or another), making it softer than most donuts.

Matcha Mochi Donut from Mochido

Mochido Food Stall

Pork and Chicken Skewers

The pork skewers from NTM Thai Street Grill remind me so much of the Filipino pork barbecue, which is sweet and savoury. NTM also sells it with rice, and I would happily eat ten of the pork skewer with rice. Hmm, childhood memories coming back.

NTM Thai Street Grills

Pork and Chicken Skewers

Spicy Salmon Sushi Tacos

Imagine your favourite sushi served in a taco format with fried, lightly battered seaweed as the taco shell, and that's what we got from Taco Nori. First, their sushi rice is perfect. Then, the salmon is delicious too, but the fried seaweed binds everything together.

Taco Nori Stall

Red Bean Taiyaki

This is not part of the top ten list, but I want taiyaki every time I see it. We chose the red bean flavour because it seems more traditional and goes well with the fish-shaped waffle.

The Taiyaki Stall

Red Bean Taiyaki

After enjoying the Taiyaki, we decided to walk around the non-food area, and I even spent money on Spy x Family stickers.

Super Crispy Fried Pork Belly

It's lechong kawali! Lechong Kawali is Filipino fried crispy pork belly, which is what we got. Now, I need some rice and Mang Tomas. Unfortunately, they're out of the Lechon sauce, so we chose the okonomiyaki flavour instead.

Okonomiyaki Super Crispy Fried Pork Belly

---

I ate a lot of food today, yet I don't feel food coma. Of course, it helps that we walked around and stood up the whole time we ate. We also maximized our time here. We arrived at 7:00 PM and left after 10:00 PM (the market closed at 11:00 PM). Three hours of walking and eating makes me happy.

Afterwards, we walked to the Sky Train and went straight home. Tea would be lovely before going to bed, but I don't think we have any caffeine-free tea at home, so here I am, trying really hard to stay awake to finish this post.

I'll come back again next year, maybe earlier in the season, so I can map out and black all the food stalls at the Richmond Market. It'll be a fun project to undertake.
