Vancouver Christmas Market 2024: Second Visit

One of the perks of having a season pass to the Vancouver Christmas Market is the chance to revisit and discover more culinary gems. Today, we returned for another festive evening, this time focusing on trying dishes we hadn’t sampled before. Here’s a rundown of our latest foodie adventure.

All Beef (100%) Sausage from Bratwurst Haus

This naturally smoked sausage was everything you want in a bratwurst: juicy, flavourful, and cooked to perfection. The fine grind beef had a satisfying texture, and the smoky aroma added a warm, comforting vibe that’s perfect for a winter night.

Veggie Sausage from Bratwurst Haus

This plant-based option, made with soy and bean protein, veggies, and mild Italian spices, was a thoughtful offering for vegetarians. While it had a decent flavour profile, it didn’t quite hold up to the other savoury options at the market. I’d recommend skipping it unless you're committed to a vegetarian diet.

Creamy Mushroom Soup from Das Champignon Haus & Das Soup Haus

As a mushroom enthusiast, this soup was a delight! The rich, velvety broth was packed with earthy mushroom flavour, making it the ultimate comfort food on a chilly evening. I could have easily had a second serving—it’s that good!

4. Nutella Langos from Das Langos

We ended our night on a sweet note with this indulgent dessert. The freshly fried langos, topped with a generous spread of Nutella, was a dreamy combination of crispy and creamy. It’s the perfect shareable treat to cap off a magical market visit.

Trying new food items at Vancouver Christmas Market 2024

The holiday season in Vancouver isn’t complete without a trip to the Vancouver Christmas Market, and this year’s edition did not disappoint! Beyond the festive atmosphere of twinkling lights and live music, the highlight for me (as always) was the incredible food. Here's a taste of my culinary adventure at the market this year.

Sausage Roll from Meat Pie Haus

This warm, flaky delight was a great way to kick off our visit. The crust was perfectly golden and buttery, and the filling had just the right seasoning to make each bite a satisfying experience. It’s a must-try for anyone who enjoys comforting holiday eats.

Skewers from Das Kebab Haus

Das Kebab Haus is a new booth this year, offering five types of skewers: beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and veggie. While all were well-seasoned and grilled to perfection, some stood out more than others. My personal favourite was the lamb — juicy and bursting with flavour — while my husband leaned towards the beef. The veggie skewer was fine but didn’t compare to the meat options unless you're vegetarian or vegan.

Champignon with Garlic Sauce from Das Champignon Haus

As a mushroom lover, I was thrilled to try this dish, and it exceeded all my expectations. The garlic sauce was creamy, rich, and perfectly balanced, complementing the tender mushrooms beautifully. This is a standout dish I’ll be craving long after the market is over.

Deep-Fried Squid Tentacle from Squid Feast

This old favourite remains as delicious as ever. The crispy batter and tender squid create a delightful texture contrast, but be warned: it’s best enjoyed piping hot. Once it cools, it loses some of its magic, so eat fast!

Pro Tips for the Market

  • Go early! Beat the evening rush to avoid long lines and secure seating.
  • Layer up. The winter chill can be biting, so dress warmly to enjoy the outdoor setting.
  • Pace yourself. There are so many amazing foods to try, so don’t fill up too quickly!

The Vancouver Christmas Market is a feast for the senses, and with delicious offerings like these, it’s a foodie paradise you won’t want to miss this holiday season. What’s your favourite market treat? Let me know in the comments below!

Celebrating Filipino Christmas at "Maligayang Pasko, Vancouver!"

Happy Saturday! Hubby and I went to St. Patrick's Hall on 12th Avenue and Main Street for "Maligayang Pasko, Vancouver!" organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver. Of course, we're here for the food and enjoyed listening to Filipino Christmas carols performed on the stage. Many beautiful parols make me feel like I'm back home.

Miki Bihon, Pork BBQ, Chicken Inasal from Hapag Restaurant

For our first meal of the day, we chose Hapag Restaurant since the only other options were the ubiquitous Pampanga Cuisine and Plato Filipino. We ordered their Miki Bihon (Filipino noodle dish) with Filipino pork BBQ skewers. Since it was the last serving of miki bihon, they offered to add chicken inasal. I'm more than happy to take it. I also got their bibingka to-go and can't wait to enjoy it at home.

Miki Bihon, Pork BBQ Skewer, and Chicken Inasal from Hapag Restaurant

The miki bihon reminded me of my late grandma (my Lola Loring), who cooked the best pancit ever! My mother-in-law prepares a close second. Yum! The Filipino barbecue is also perfect with its sweet and savoury combination, and the pieces are also fatty. Lastly, the chicken inasal is also not too shabby. I wish Hapag would join events more so we can enjoy their food.

Pandesal and Spanish Bread from Keyk Bread

After Hapag, we walked around and got pandesal and Spanish bread from Keyk Bread. I can't wait to bring the pandesal to work for breakfast.

Siomai and Melon Juice from Macau Imperial Tea

Then, from the Macau Imperial Tea booth, I noticed Filipino siomai. I got an order which took me back to my elementary days in Novaliches.

Siomai from Macau Imperial Tea

It's a bit sweet but the perfect bite when topped with chilli oil and covered in soy sauce.

Siomai from Macau Imperial Tea

We also got their melon juice. I feel like a kid coming home from playing outside to my mom preparing this juice for refreshments. I guess you can really take a Filipino out of the Philippines, but you can't remove the Philippines out of the Filipino.

Melon Juice from Macau Imperia Tea

Turon Turnover from Leavenly Goods

We walked around for the third time and decided to get turon turnover from Leaveny Goods. Imagine all the good things you love about turon: ripened banana and crispy exterior but between layers of flakey bread. I'm impressed.

Indulge in the irresistible Turon Turnover: a crispy, flaky pastry filled with caramelized bananas and jackfruit jam, topped with caramelized roasted sesame seeds, creating a perfect blend of sweet and crunchy delights.

Potato Corner

As we were about to leave, I succumbed to the call of spud and got a tera-sized loopy fries covered in sour cream & onion flavouring from Potato Corner. I wish I could enjoy this while watching a movie. 🤤

After happily enjoying our Potato Corner, we grabbed groceries at Save on Foods and No Frills. It's a productive and happy Saturday.

Third time at the Vancouver Christmas Market 2023

Since it's a clear evening with no rain in the forecast, my husband suggested we go to the Vancouver Christmas Market. After work, we thought of walking to Jack Poole Plaza, but it's so cold. I couldn't feel my face, so we stopped at the south side of Burrard Bridge to catch Bus 2 on Cornwall.

I'm still reviewing the list of food items we have yet to try, which you can check here.

Roasted Tomato Soup from Das Soup Haus

Since I am super cold, we went to Das Soup Haus and noticed they had added a Ham & Cheese Croissant to their menu. I paired it with the Roasted Tomato Soup. Of course, the soup is not burning hot. It's warm enough for this evening. Be sure to devour it because it will get cold fast.

Roasted Tomato Soup from Das Soup Haus in Vancouver Christmas Market

Meanwhile, the Ham & Cheese Croissant is perfect for dipping in the tarty soup.

Vogue Cakes Bakery

Afterwards, we went to Vague Cakes Bakery. Have they always been here?! I don't remember; this is my third time at the Vancouver Christmas Market. We decided on the Schnecken Sticky Pecan Rolls out of the few sweets they offer. It's perfect for this evening! It's a warm cinnamon roll topped with pecans. Surprisingly, it is not overly sweet.

Schnecken Sticky Pecan Rolls from Vogue Cakes Bakery in Vancouver Christmas Market

Currywurst and Cheesy Bacon Twist from Bratwurst Haus

Going through the long list of German sausages available at Bratwurst, I went for the Currywurst while hubby got the Cheesy Bacon Twist.

The Currywurst has bite-sized chunks of my favourite thuringer brat and it is drowning in a curry-based sauce which means a bit of spiciness and tart from the ketchup. I love it. However, I still prefer the Thuringer brat.

Bite-sized cut Thuringer sausage, topped with curry-ketchup sauce, sprinkled with curry powder (German's Most Favourite)

The cheesy bacon twist is the Bavarian Smokie we tried last week, wrapped in delicious crispy bacon. If you love bacon, this is perfect. The sauerkraut also helped with the fattiness of the sausage.

Black Forest Cake from Das Strudel Haus

After a savoury and saucy currywurst, I crave something sweet, so I went for the Black Forest Cake from Das Strudel Haus. It has a soft and moist chocolate cake based with tarty cherry compote in the middle and generous whipped cream on top.

It's the perfect ending for our food night at the Vancouver Christmas Market.

Trying more food from Vancouver Christmas Market 2023

The benefit of the Vancouver Christmas Market 2023 season pass is we can enter as many times as we want. This is our second time at the beautiful market this year. Of course, the goal is to try food items we have yet to try before.

I am using this menu I created as a checklist.

Thuringer Brat and Bavarian Smokie from Bratwurst Haus

Last year, we went for the Farmer Sausage from the Bratwurst Haus. Today, we gave the Thuringer Brat and Bavarian Smokie a try.

The Bavarian smokie is as classic as it will get in terms of bratwurst flavour-wise.

Finest cuts of pork, the most flavourful blend of spices, naturally smoked

Meanwhile, the Thuringer Brat is impressive. Surprisingly, it was so delicious, thanks to the garlic and marjoram. The latter adds a distinctive and slightly sweet flavour which complements the meaty richness.

Both sausage is generously topped with sauerkraut, adding that German flare. The distinctive sour taste is such a fantastic palate cleanser when you find the meaty sausage greasy.

Helmi's Potato & Cheddar Perogies

Every year, the pillowy perogies are available in the Vancouver Christmas Market. The only difference is the brand. This year Helmi's is the perogies brand. A serving comes with 6 pieces of perogies topped with savoury crumbled sausage, sour cream, grilled onions, and sauerkraut.

Traditional Plum Knedla

We discovered Knedla last year. It is a traditional Eastern European (mostly sweet) dumpling. When we got it in 2022, the conventional plum was already sold out, so it was our first time trying it this year.

Back to the roots with sweet plum flavour! We will fill our signature potato dough with locally sourced pitted plum, then coat it with our secret crumb coating,

I love the soft, doughy texture. However, I discovered that I am not a fan of plums.

What food will we try again next week when we visit the Vancouver Christmas Market? Any suggestions?

Exploring the Newest Food at Vancouver Christmas Market 2023

It officially feels like Christmas in Vancouver with the opening of the Vancouver Christmas Market. Last year, we opted to get the Season's Pass for unlimited entry, and we did it again this year. I also documented the menu of the different vendors last year and can spot the new food vendors and items. Since it is opening night, we opted for the new items.

Das Späetzle Haus

This new food vendor focuses on selling späetzle, which are soft egg noodles, often pan-fried for a delightful crispness.

Späetzle with mushroom sauce from Späetzle Haus
Fresh späetzle topped with traditional German mushroom sauce, garnished with pickled cucumber and caramelized onion.

Meat Pie with Gravy from Mr. Hotcakes

Last year, Mr. Hotcakes focused on selling hotcakes, as the name implies. This year, they decided to add meat pies with gravy to their menu.

Meat Pies with Mashed Potato and Gravy from Mr. Hotcakes

If I didn't just come from England, I would say this is amazing. However, since I tasted traditional British pies covered in gravy, the one from the Christmas Market became just okay.

Das Strudel Haus

Das Strudel Haus is a new sweets booth selling strudels and Black Forest cake.

Warm Apple Strudel with Creme Anglaise from Das Strudel Haus

The flaky, sweet pastry is so delicious after eating all the savoury things the market offers.

Smoked Meat Baked Potato Poutine from Das Smoked Meat Haus

Last year, Das Smoked Meat offered only two sandwiches. This year, they added poutine, but instead of having traditional fries, they went to the more comforting and warm baked potato. It still has the gravy and cheese curds, plus all the savoury meat.
