Lumberjack Slam and Southwestern Benny from Denny's Canada

Happy Christmas! My first meal of the day is my dad's Arroz Caldo. It's chicken ginger porridge, and it was excellent. My love for food came from my dad. I seriously think they should open a restaurant.

After enjoying a bowl (who am I kidding? I had 3 bowls!) of my dad's porridge, we left their home to attend Christmas Day Mass at our local church.

On our walk there, as expected, all restaurants were closed except for the Denny's between our home and church.

After Mass, we had brunch at Denny's.

Lumberjack Slam from Denny's Canada
Buttermilk pancakes (we upgraded to get the Hearty 9-Grain Pancake), grilled ham, bacon strips, sausage links, eggs, hash browns, and bread.

Hubby ordered the Lumberjack Slam, which came with pancakes, grilled ham, bacon strips, sausage links, hash browns, eggs, and bread. My favourite is the savoury ham slice. The sausage was on the sweeter side, while the bacon strips were expectedly salty.

We upgraded to get the Hearty 9-Grain Pancake and prefer this version because it's chewier and has more bite to it. Fun!

Hearty 9-Grain Pancake from Denny's
Two multigrain wheat pancakes made with flaxseeds, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

I ordered the Southwestern Benny. The topping is a bit spicy, like a mild chilli. I got it with red-skinned potatoes, which are better and less oily than the hash.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Day celebration filled with love, hope, peace, and joy.

Christmas Eve Dinner from Ukrainian Village

It's our family tradition to have Christmas Eve dinner (Noche Buena), and my younger sister usually picks a country where we should try the food.

In the past years, we've had the following:

This year she chose Ukrainian food to support a Ukrainian business in Vancouver. It's our family's first time trying Ukrainian / Eastern European food. There are only a few Ukrainian restaurants in Vancouver, and we ordered from Ukrainian Village on Denman Street.

Our menu tonight includes the following:

  • Borsch
  • Cabbage Roll
  • Ukrainian Sausage
  • Meatloaf
  • Kiev Cutlet
  • Lamb Shanks
  • Roasted Duck
  • Beef Stroganoff
  • Schnitzel Chicken
  • Schnitzel Pork
  • Potato & Cheddar Cheese Perogies
  • Potato & Fried Onion Perogies

Christmas Eve dinner from Ukrainian Village

The food was delicious. I love the kiev cutlet, beef stroganoff, both schnitzels, and cabbage rolls. I overate and was severely food coma during game night. 😅 It's nice to spend time with the family and sleep over at my parents' place.

Tim Hortons Strawberry Fill Powdered Sugar Donut

There was a day a couple of months ago when I did an online search and inventory of Tim Hortons donuts in Canada and internationally. My research led me to believe that the Strawberry Fill donut from Tims has been discontinued. My source is this Reddit thread, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was available in the Tims near us for delivery.

It was filled halfway and has a good strawberry flavour. The donut itself is dry, which is typical of Tim's donut.

Chicken Wrap for lunch from Tim Hortons | Day Before Christmas

Happy rainy Saturday, Vancouver! We planned to visit the Vancouver Christmas Market today but with the pouring rain and remaining snow on the ground, staying cozy at home before going to my parent's place seems to be what we need.

I ordered Slow Cooked Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap and Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap from Tim Hortons delivery for lunch.

Slow-Cooked Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap

The Slow Cooked Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap from Tims was not spicy, but a bit tangy; the shredded slow-cooked chicken was surprisingly juicy and soft.

Slow-Cooked Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wrap from Tim Hortons

Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap

The Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap was good. The crispy chicken was a bit stale and dry but smothered in sauce, which helped. There are a couple strips of bacon, and the texture reminds me of bacon cooked in a microwave. The lettuce and tomato were the best part of this wrap.

Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap from Tim Hortons

Candy Cane Iced Capp from Tim Hortons

We're back to our average start of winter weather of 7°C and raining cat and dogs in Vancouver. However, since it feels warmer (compared to the past couple of days), I ordered the Candy Cane Iced Capp from Tim Hortons delivery.

Crushed candy cane on top of Candy Cane Iced Capp from Tim Hortons

I generally dislike Candy Cane and Peppermint flavours, but the flavour from the Candy Cane Iced Capp is not too pronounced. It's a subtle aftertaste which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Pasta Day: Chorizo Arrabiata from HelloFresh Canada

Happy Wednesday! It's pasta day in our household. First, we had a quesadilla and hot chocolate for breakfast (I know it's not pasta, but that's one of our usual breakfasts). Then, we enjoyed the Butternut Squash Ravioli with Toasted Pepitas and Tomatoes for lunch.

We cooked the Chorizo Arrabiata with Fresh Penne and Parsley from our HelloFresh box for dinner.

Chorizo Arrabiata with Fresh Penne and Parsley and Crave-Worthy Garlic Bread

SPICY! I added all the chilli flakes, and it made the dish spicy. The parsley did add some freshness to the plate, and the parmesan cheese made it slightly creamy. I wished the tomatoes weren't sliced in half to provide fresh acidity when you take a bite.

Chorizo Arrabiata with Fresh Penne and Parsley

Overall, a delicious dinner served with HelloFresh Crave-Worthy Garlic Bread.

Below is the HelloFresh description for this meal.

Seafood Day: Gochujang Glazed Shrimp from HelloFresh Canada

Happy snowing Tuesday! We don't get snow often in Vancouver, and I woke up to a big pile when I took a peek out our window.

It's seafood day at our household!

For dinner tonight, hubby and I cooked Gochujang Glazed Shrimp with Sesame Rice from our HelloFresh box.

Gochujang Glazed Shrimp with Sesame Rice from HelloFresh Canada

SPICY! It was spicy because I added all the sriracha. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, but I wish there were more vegetables. Otherwise, it was a delicious healthy meal.

Below is the HelloFresh description for this meal.

Meatless Monday: Butternut Squash Ravioli from HelloFresh Canada

Happy Monday!

We successfully did #MeatlessMonday today by having oatmeal for breakfast and the North African-Inspired Falafel and Green Couscous with Blistered Veggies and Creamy Harissa Sauce for lunch. Lastly, for dinner, we cooked the Butternut Squash Ravioli with Toasted Pepitas and Tomatoes from our HelloFresh box.

Butternut Squash Ravioli with Toasted Pepitas and Tomatoes from HelloFresh Canada

The pepitas provided an additional depth of flavour to the dish. I love the fresh tomatoes, onions, and spinach as it balances the creamy pesto sauce. This is a winning dish!

Cal Smart Spicy Honey Shrimp from HelloFresh Canada

I'm testing to see whether individual HelloFresh meal posts will do better than weekly ones.

It's a busy Sunday!

For dinner, we cooked the Cal Smart Spicy Honey Shrimp with Ginger Rice, Peppers, Carrots, and Bok Choy from our HelloFresh Box.

Cal Smart Spicy Honey Shrimp from HelloFresh Canada

It was salty. It's delicious but has a little more salt than I'd like. Also, my husband mentioned that it was spicy. There's a subtle heat, but I have a high tolerance for spicy food.

Cal Smart Spicy Honey Shrimp from HelloFresh Canada

Shrimps were cooked perfectly (so I recommend following the instructions). I love the crunch of the vegetables, especially the bok choy.

When I was cooking it, all I could think of was Beef Broccoli that you get from Chinese restaurants. 😅

Below is the HelloFresh description for this meal.

Sweet and savoury meet in our honey shrimp and bok choy stir-fry. Bold soy, zesty green onions and fragrant honey lighten up this twist on a takeout favourite. Calorie Smart is based on a per serving calculation of the recipe's kilocalorie amount.

Oreo Cheesecake at Trees Cheesecake + Organic Coffee

After a satisfying lunch at Suika, we went to Trees. We tried the special Ferrero Rochet cheesecake last year, so we opted for the Oreo Cheesecake.

There are crushed Oreos on top of the cheesecake, but it has become soft. I kinda want to eat this with milk which is probably an unusual thought.

Salmon Family Bibimbap at Suika

After breakfast at Tim Hortons and Sunday Mass, we bought gifts for my parents, siblings, and our secret Santa at home.

Then, we had lunch at my favourite Suika. This is probably the last time we'll be here for the year, and this has become a happy place for me.

Hubby tried the Salmon Family Bibimbap on the Chef's Special menu. It was surprisingly delicious.

Salmon Family Bibimbap
Flaked salmon, ikura, and kanimiso butter served in a hot stone bowl. Topped with crispy salmon skin.

We love crispy fish, and this is awesome. I wish there was egg on top to maintain the bibimbap feel, but the stone bowl and crispy rice at the bottom are perfect.

Signature Beef Curry with tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet)
Suika original stewed beef tendon curry.

Meanwhile, I ordered my usual Chicken Dashi Karaage and Signature Beef Curry with Tonkatsu, and this time with extra curry sauce on the side. 🤤

Chicken Dashi Karaage
Juicy deep-fried chicken thigh, crispy on the outside and filled with rich dashi shoyu flavour

After lunch, it's still snowing outside but not as heavily as in the morning.

Sausage Breakfast Sandwich from Tim Hortons

Happy Sunday! We woke up at 7:00 AM to watch the World Cup Finals. Congratulations Argentina! We saw a few centimetres of snow on the ground when we opened our window blinds. Hubby took out our snow boots so we could proceed with the day.

It's snowing in Vancouver!

Our first stop is Tim Hortons for breakfast. I usually don't post about my Tims breakfast anymore, but since it was snowing outside, it seems like a good idea to write and share my photos.

"There's Snowplace like Tims" Holiday Cup

I love the Tims holiday slogan, "There's snowplace like Tims," and it's snowing outside. You might think I'm crazy for getting so excited about the snow, but we occasionally see it in Vancouver, and I still feel a childlike wonder when I see snowflakes fall on the ground.

Sausage Breakfast Sandwich and Coffee from Tim Hortons

After breakfast, we slowly walked to Church for Sunday Mass.

North African-Inspired Falafel and Green Couscous from HelloFresh Canada

I am "testing" to see if doing an individual post for each HelloFresh be better than doing one post for all the meals for the week.

Happy Saturday! My day started at 7:00 AM with cleaning the bathroom. Then, I took a 30-minute break before ironing a couple of our shirts for Sunday Mass. Afterwards, we reheated for 30 seconds the hopia we received from my parents, which I happily enjoyed with tea for breakfast.

At 10:47 AM, our HelloFresh box arrived! I looked at the recipe card and opted to cook the meal that took the longest, which happens to be the "North African-Inspired Falafel and Green Couscous with Blistered Veggies and Creamy Harissa Sauce." Hubby and I prepared it for lunch.

North African-Inspired Falafel and Green Couscous with Blistered Veggies and Creamy Harissa Sauce from HelloFresh Canada

The couscous was smooth and buttery. There is a nice mix of hearty vegetables, which gives the dish varying textures. However, the real winner of the dish is the falafel and harissa sauce. I'll happily eat those two in a wrap or on top of a salad. Yum!

North African-Inspired Falafel and Green Couscous with Blistered Veggies and Creamy Harissa Sauce from HelloFresh Canada

After lunch, we prepared to leave our home for Richmond, BC, where my parents and two siblings live. We had a delicious food coma dinner c/o of my dad. I am blessed to have wonderful parents who love to feed us. Thank God!

Below is the HelloFresh description for this meal.

Fresh, vibrant and colourful; this dish is inspired by the flavours of the Moroccan souq! With crunchy falafel, fresh lemony couscous, sweet peppers and a zippy harissa spice drizzle, tonight's meatless dinner is sure to become a new fam fave!

Food Adventure at the PNE Winter Fair

My hubby and I went to the first night of the PNE Winter Fair to see the beautiful lights display and check out the food scene.

For details about the event, check out this post. If you need the PNE Winter Fair food menus and prices, this is where you need to be.

We left our home later than I would like, but it's a weekday, so it is what it is. We arrived at the Pacific Coliseum entrance a couple minutes before 6:00 PM.

Winter Lights inside the PNE Winter Fair powered by BC Hydro

We first walked around to see all the lights displayed and checked all the sections of the whole fair. Then, I took photos of the menu to write my post.

Beef Chili from Chili Hut

If you need something to keep you warm, Mr. Arancino sells onion soup, while Mom's Grilled Cheese offers tomato soup. However, the Chili Hut near the Duelling Pianos is the primary food vendor focusing on chili and soup.

We ordered the Beef Chili, which was served on sourdough bread. It was $14.00. It was decent chili but needed a bit more salt and pepper.

Beef Chili Bowl
House-made beef chili with kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas, and mixed vegetables. Served in a sourdough bread bowl with all the toppings.

After eating our Beef Chili, we admired the lights in the Winter Creatures display. Then, dessert!

Mehple from BeaverTail

I let hubby choose our dessert, and he went for the BeaverTail because, as he pointed out, we rarely see them.

The line wasn't too bad, but the wait was close to 10 minutes. It was freshly made and still perfectly warm, even on a cold evening.

We ordered the Mehple, which is all about the Canadian maple flavour on top of their signature fried dough.

Mehple from BeaverTails
Maple-flavoured spread & maple sugar crunch

We ate while walking back to the next food stall we wanted to try.

Chicken & Holiday Waffle from Hot & Crispy Chicken

Hot & Crispy Chicken is a permanent fixture in PNE Fair, and I am happy to see them during the Winter Fair offering the same stuff with the addition of two-holiday menu items.

We ordered the Chicken & Holiday Waffle. It tastes like a turkey dinner in chicken and waffle format. All the stuffing flavour is stuffed in the waffle,   while the perfectly juicy and crispy chicken serves as the vehicle for the warm gravy as it gets transported to my mouth.

Chicken & Holiday Waffle
2 pieces of chicken, sage & chicken stuffing waffle, cranberry glaze, and gravy

It's my favourite thing we tried this evening.

Cinnamon Sugar Chimney Cake Praguery

After the delicious meal, I had my eye on the Praguery. I am on a Chimney Cake hunt since enjoying one at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Much to the surprise of the lady selling the Praguery, I ordered the Chimney Cake covered in just Cinnamon Sugar - no ice cream or spread inside. It's similar to what I tried at the Vancouver Christmas Market (VCM).

Cinnamon Sugar Chimney Cake from The Praguery

Focusing on just the chimney, Praguery cooked it better than what's in the VCM. At least I now have a source of delicious chimney cake in Vancouver that's available year-round. I just need to keep an eye out for their food truck.

We ate our cake while walking towards the Cocoa Hut.

Hot Chocolate from Cocoa Hut

It seemed silly to enjoy the PNE Winter Fair without a hot drink, so we ordered Hot Chocolate from Cocoa Hut.

It was decent hot chocolate, but not worth $4.00.

Hot Chocolate from Cocoa Hut
With a choice of whipping cream and topped with sprinkles

Before ordering our last meal, we checked out the Winter Live Shows and surprisingly enjoyed it.

The Magic of Santa Holiday Musical in Holiday Theatre

Christmas Poutine from UnRoutine Poutine

For our last meal at the PNE Winter Fair, we went to UnRoutine Poutine which is also a staple of the PNE Summer Fair, but this time they're offering a Christmastime Poutine.

Christmas Dinner Poutine from UnRoutine Poutine
Vegetarian gravy, diced turkey, sage & thyme stuffing, cranberry, and cheese curds.

It has everything you like about a turkey dinner, but fries replace mashed potatoes. All the flavour of stuffing and thyme is there. The turkey was decided and easy to eat, covered in a delicious gravy. The only letdown is the fries. They're not crispy. It couldn't maintain whatever crispiness was originally there because of all the sauce.

We ate our poutine inside the Dueling Piano hut, which I think is the best area for adults to enjoy their meal with live music in the background.

Duelling Pianos inside the PNE Winter Fair

We finished shortly after 9:00 PM, and the fair was nearly empty. So we were able to take more pictures without the crowd.
