Teriyaki Bento Boxes from Namiya Sushi

It’s a beautiful Monday evening, and we attended the Immaculate Conception Mass at church today. After the peaceful hour, we decided to grab dinner at the newly opened Namiya Sushi on West Broadway.

Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box from Namiya Sushi
includes California Roll, tempura, organic salad, fruit slices, and rice

Hubby and I both ordered teriyaki bento boxes. I chose the sockeye salmon teriyaki, while hubby went for the beef teriyaki.

The bento boxes arrived with a comforting, hot bowl of miso soup, perfect for such a chilly night. The meal also included 8 pieces of California rolls, 4 pieces of crispy tempura, a light and refreshing salad, and some sweet fruit to balance the flavours.

Chicken Karaage from Namiya Sushi

I couldn’t resist trying their chicken karaage, which was decent but didn’t stand out, and the takoyaki, which had a nice crisp on the outside and a soft, savoury center.

Takoyaki from Namiya Sushi

There are at least five sushi spots within a kilometre of our place, so I’m always looking for that one standout dish that will make me return. For example, Sushivan has its Korean ramen, while Masa serves a fantastic Japanese curry. What’s Namiya Sushi’s signature dish? I suppose I’ll have to keep coming back to discover my go-to item.

Cinco de Mayo: Nachos, Sopa de Tortilla, and Sope Especial from Mi Casa Cocina Mexicana

After cheering on my husband's effort in the BMO Vancouver Marathon, we embarked on a leisurely walk back home. The festive spirit of Cinco de Mayo was palpable, and our stomachs began to rumble with anticipation of a celebratory lunch.

Mi Casa Cocina Mexicana, nestled on Burrard Street and 4th Avenue, beckoned with its vibrant atmosphere and promise of delicious Mexican fare.

My go-to at any restaurant spot is nachos. A mountain of freshly fried corn tortilla chips forms the base, generously layered with melted cheese, savoury chorizo, a vibrant pico de gallo, sautéed jalapenos for a touch of heat, cooling sour cream, and a dollop of creamy guacamole. It's a symphony of textures and flavours, perfect for sharing (or not!). Needless to say, we couldn't finish the entire portion, and the leftovers promised a delightful treat at home.

Hubby opted for the sope especial, a limited-quantity dish featuring a handmade sope base filled with suadero (beef). For the uninitiated, a sope is a traditional Mexican dish consisting of a thick, fried masa dough base that resembles a small, deep-fried corn tortilla. The soft and pillowy base was a delight, and the beef was the best we've had in Vancouver compared to other Mexican restaurants. Its rich flavour and satisfying texture were perfectly complemented by the accompanying pinto fried beans.

Having recently enjoyed Sopa de Tortilla at Patrón Tacos & Cantina, I couldn't resist ordering it again. While Mi Casa's version offered the familiar elements – a flavorful broth with vegetables, corn tortilla strips, mozzarella cheese, avocado, and sour cream – it felt a touch bland. Thankfully, a few drops of their flavorful taquera (which translates to "taco sauce"), a vibrant red sauce, added a much-needed kick, transforming the dish into a satisfying and delectable experience.

Cinco de Mayo always provides the perfect excuse to indulge in delicious Mexican food, and this year was no different. Mi Casa Cocina Mexicana offered a delightful feast, and the vibrant atmosphere added to the celebratory spirit.

Suika's Signature Beef Curry with Tonkatsu

This weekend was a symphony of savoury spices and rich curries, a dream come true for any self-proclaimed curry aficionado like myself. It all began last Friday with a delightful Veggie Curry at Masa Japanese Restaurant. The vibrant mix of vegetables swimming in a flavorful curry base was a lovely vegetarian indulgence.

But the journey didn't end there. Yesterday, I ventured into uncharted territory, exploring the world of Soup Curry Garaku in Richmond. This unique take on the classic Japanese curry, with its brothy base and explosion of textures, was a revelation.

And today? Today was all about returning to a beloved favourite – Suika's Signature Beef Curry. For me, a beef curry base reigns supreme. Its richer flavour and deeper colour offer a taste sensation that chicken curries, with their milder nature, simply can't compete with.

Signature Beef Curry from Suika
Suika original stewed beef tendon curry topped with tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet) and karaage (deep fried chicken)

Suika truly is my happy place. Their Beef Curry is perfection in a bowl—aromatic, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. To elevate this culinary masterpiece even further, I opted for a double dose of deliciousness—a crispy Tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet) and some juicy Karaage (deep-fried chicken). The contrasting textures—the melt-in-your-mouth pork and the satisfying crunch of the chicken—added another layer of enjoyment to this already phenomenal dish.

As I left Suika, my stomach and heart were even fuller. This weekend was a testament to Japanese curry's versatility and sheer deliciousness. From the classic comfort of a veggie curry to the adventurous world of soup curry, and finally, the return to a familiar favourite at Suika, each experience was unique and unforgettable.

Unagi Don from Masa Japanese Restaurant

Happy Friday! While the weekend beckons with its promise of relaxation, a bittersweet note hangs in the air. I'm working from home today, but my husband attends a weekend retreat in Mission, BC. Before he departed, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Masa Japanese Restaurant, conveniently located nearby.

Steamed rice with BBQ sea eel and Japanese pickles

Being Friday and adhering to our Catholic beliefs, we opted for a pescetarian feast. My husband dove headfirst into the Unagi Don. This classic dish featured steamed rice as its foundation, the perfect canvas for the star of the show – a generous portion of BBQ sea eel. Japanese pickles added a delightful tangy counterpoint.

Veggie Curry from Masa Japanese Restaurant

I gravitated towards my favourite—the Veggie Curry. This comforting dish showcased my love for Japanese curry in all its glory. Assorted vegetables—a vibrant medley of broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and mushrooms—swam in a rich, flavorful curry sauce.

Assorted Tempura from Masa Japanese Restaurant
4 pieces prawn, 4 pieces yam, and 1 piece broccoli

However, only a Japanese dining experience is complete with a shared appetizer; ours was no exception. We opted for the assorted tempura, a symphony of crispy perfection. Four juicy prawns sported a light and airy tempura batter, while four pieces of yam (sweet potato) offered a delightful sweetness. Even the lone piece of tempura broccoli held its own, its slightly bitter flavour adding a surprising complexity to the mix. Each piece was a textural delight, the light and crispy batter giving way to tender, cooked-through vegetables within.

Deep Fried Chicken from Masa Japanese Restaurant

After our coffee date at Bean Around The World, I need to satify my cravings for crispy and comforting fried chicken. I decided that we should have dinner at Masa Japanese Restaurant for their Korean deep fried chicken.

Deep Fried Chicken from Masa Japanese Restaurant

For reference, since the beginning of 2024 below are our fried chicken adventure:

As we stepped into the cozy restaurant, the sound of music and lively chatter echoes. We received the menu and it changed in format, but the fried chicken is still there. Meanwhile, my husband went for the consistent Teriyaki Bento Box.

Our food arrived! My fried chicken craving was satisfied with the perfect golden crust, giving way to succulent tender meat.

Mochido and Matcha Scones at BC Culture Days: Discover Japan, organized by Pacific Arts Market

After lunch at MASA Japanese Restaurant, we returned to BC Culture Days: Discover Japan, organized by Pacific Arts Market.

We ordered from the two food vendors: Mochido and Sweet U.

Matcha and Red Bean Chubby Macaron from Sweet U

The Matcha Scone and Matcha & Redbean Chubby Macaron from Sweet U was to die for. The macaron is perfect, especially with matcha and red bean. However, my favourite is that matcha scone. It has a strong matcha flavour, and it is so moist. It was obviously baked the same day. I need all scones to be like this!

Matcha Scone from Sweet U

Moist Matcha Scone from Sweet U

Afterwards, we chose a Black Sesame donut from Mochido, and I was overwhelmed by the black sesame flavour, which was slightly sweet yet nutty. But the real surprise that I keep forgetting is the donut base has the consistency of mochi.

I need more scones and mochi donuts in my life.

Bento Box from MASA Japnese Restaurant

Happy Saturday! I got my annual haircut today. After that, we stopped by BC Culture Days: Discover Japan, organized by Pacific Arts Market. Unfortunately, the two vendors served sweet desserts, so we walked to MASA Japanese Restaurant in the same block.

I ordered my usual Assorted Katsu Curry while my husband got their beef teriyaki bento box.

Since this was our first meal, I felt surprisingly full.

BC Culture Days Latin America at Pacific Arts Market, Vancouver

Greetings on this rainy Saturday! I am fortunate to reside just a few blocks from Pacific Arts Market. This establishment has recently delighted us with its vibrant events (see Vancouver Night Market), especially those featuring delectable culinary offerings.

Today, our rendezvous at Pacific Arts revolves around celebrating Latin America's rich and diverse flavours. Needless to say, I'm here to savour every delightful dish presented by the participating vendors. We arrived in the area at around 2:30 in the afternoon, and based on earlier pictures, some vendors had already left.

Taquitos from Lita's Mexican Food

Our gastronomic expedition starts at Lita's Mexican food, where the enticing aroma of taquitos beckons. These little gems sport a crispy exterior, and the hot sauce makes it perfect on this chilly day.

Chicken Taquitos from Lita's Mexican Food

If you don't know, taquitos are a popular Mexican dish, often served as finger foods or appetizers. These cheese and meat-filled tortillas are typically deep-fried until they become crispy and golden brown. Lita's taquitos are available in grocery stores, so go check them out.

Mote con Chicharrón from La Yapa

We're venturing into uncharted culinary territory as we try Ecuadorian cuisine for the first time at La Yapa. We picked two delectable choices: the Mote Con Chicharrón and Guagua de Pan.

The Mote con Chicharrón is a revelation. It features mote (hominy), which is corn that has been treated with an alkali to remove the outer hull, causing the corn kernels to puff up and have a soft, chewy texture. It serves as the base for the chicharrón (fried pieces of pork). It is fatty, juicy, and oh-so succulent, harmonizing perfectly with the tender corn.

Mote con Chicharrón from La Yapa

Meanwhile, guagua de pan is a traditional Ecuadorian sweet bread decorated with coloured icing. The bread is slightly firmer than expected and likely became stale due to the cold and rainy weather. I wish I could try this fresh from the oven.

Beef Quesadillas from Mi Casa Cucina Mexicana

Prepare yourself, for what I'm about to share is nothing short of a culinary epiphany. Mi Casa Cucina Mexicana serves up what can only be described as the pinnacle of Mexican beef in Vancouver.

Beef Quesadillas from Mi Casa Cucina Mexicana

The beef is tender, juicy, and bursting with flavour and placed upon a warm tortilla covered with melted cheese. It's a symphony of taste that I can't wait to revisit at their location on the corner of 4th Avenue and Burrard and perhaps again on Cinco de Mayo.

Tamales from Jicama y Perejil

This is my second time trying tamales (a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of masa that is filled with various ingredients, wrapped in a corn husk, and then steamed or boiled), and the first time was also because of a Pacific Arts event. I chose tender chicken enveloped by a tamale's embrace.

Chicken Tamales from Jicama y Perejil

While the chicken's tender is undeniable, the texture of the corn gives pause, exhibiting an unexpected grittiness. Moreover, I know tamales need to be served hot, but this is not warm enough to melt the cheese on top.

Nachos from TACO'N Todo food truck

I have a mild obsession with food trucks and have made a checklist of food trucks in Vancouver.

Beef Nachos from TACO'N Todo food truck

I ordered nachos topped with beef and was pleasantly shocked at the serving size. It's good enough for three people, and we manage to conquer it as a duo. The nacho chips, a personal weakness, deliver pure satisfaction, making this dish a resounding success.

After our food adventure, we make our way to church for the 5 PM Anticipated Mass, and I find myself writing this post inside Blenz Coffee at the corner of West Broadway and Maple. I will edit it at home later this evening.

Atlantic Salmon Oshi Sushi from Masa Japanese Restaurant

Last night, I felt an acute pain on my right ear and I probably have an infection there. After Mass, we went to Downtown Vancouver to visit the two walk-in clinics open on Sundays and they're already both at capacity for the day. I sucked up the pain as we walked across Granville Bridge going home.

I told my husband I want ramen for comfort so we stopped by Masa Japanese Restaurant so I can get a bowl of ramen.

For sharing, I ordered Atlantic Salmon Oshi Sushi. I had Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen while my husband went for Tofu Teriyaki Platter.

If you're vegetarian and still want something delicious, the Tofu Teriyaki will definitely hit the spot. It's so good!

Bulgogi Jeongol from Masa Japanese Restaurant

Happy Saturday dinner! I stayed home all day, but we went to Anticipated Sunday Mass at our local parish. Afterwards, we grabbed groceries, then dinner at Masa Japanese Restaurant.

We ordered the Bulgogi Jeongol. It is a Korean hot pot dish with beef and vegetables. I tried the soup base, and it's obviously beef broth. The banchan is a nice touch as a palate cleanser.

We also ordered the Sake Bomb Roll because we are going through the Special Sushi list. It's spicy. Although, I realized I am not a fan of seared salmon on my roll.

Dinner at Ton Ton Sushi

After a day at the beaches on the west side of Vancouver, we had dinner at a Ton Ton Sushi before riding the bus home.

I'm surprised how delicious the Dynamite Roll is; better than Masa, Sushivan, and every other sushi place I've had so far.

Dynamite Rolls
Inside: Prawn tempura, crab meat, avocado, cucumber, and lettuce
Outside: Masago

We had Takoyaki as well, which is so-so.

Takoyaki
Deep-fried octopus ball, drizzled with katsu sauce, mayo, bonito fish flakes, sesame seed, and kizami nori

I also tried Creamy Mentaiko Udon for the first time ever and enjoyed it. However, I wish there was protein on top. I'll order creamy udon from other Japanese restaurants we frequent to be able to compare, but overall, it was delicious.

Hubby had the Katsu Don. We haven't had it in a long time, so I am happy to enjoy it. It's delicious too.

Dinner at Masa Japanese Restaurant

After the food day at PNE Fair, we went home to rest. Then, we walked to the nearby Masa Japanese Restaurant for soup for dinner. I just need something to warm my heart and tummy.

Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen
Pork tonkatsu flavoured soup base with chashu and egg.

The Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen hits the spot. It's hot, delicious, and filling.

Nabeyaki U-don

I'm so happy with my husband. He tried a new dish for us to enjoy. He ordered udon, and we were pleasantly surprised at its deliciousness. I'm now more open to trying udon at other restaurants now that we have a better idea of what to expect.

Tekka Bomb Roll

It's not the best roll from Masa. It's average at best, but it's definitely spicy.

Dinner at Masa Japanese Restaurant

To end my day off, we had dinner at Masa Japanese Restaurant and I had my favourite Assorted Japanese Curry. We were also pleasantly surprised to see that they know have a Korean food section in the menu.

From the new section, we ordered the Kimchi Fried Rice and Korean fried chicken. I'm so happy for this addition!

The Kimchi Fried Rice is definitely better than Sushivan.

Korean Yangnyeom Chicken

I haven't had Korean fried chicken in a long time and I look forward to trying all the flavours that Masa has to offer.

Lunch at Sushi Bang

After Mass, we planned to head to Costco, and on our walk, we decided to stop by Sushi Bang for lunch.

Bristol Roll
inside: deep-fried prawn and crabmeat
outside: salmon

Bristol Roll

It's a good roll, but somehow the Special Rolls from Masa and Sushivan are just better. We also ordered two bento boxes and an Ebi okonomiyaki.

Lunch from Sushi Bang

Box B Beef Bento Box
Beef Teriyaki with rice, assorted tempura, 2 pieces salmon and 2 pieces tuna sashimi, salmon maki, and salad

Hubby ordered the Box B Beef Bento Box, and the beef teriyaki was surprisingly delicious, better than others we have tried so far. Though, the sashimi and salmon maki are just okay.

Salmon Bento Box
Salmon teriyaki with rice, assorted tempura, BC roll, and salad

The assorted tempura and BC roll are good, but the salmon teriyaki is better at Sushivan. The salmon was cooked excellently, but the teriyaki sauce didn't work well. I'm not sure cause it was good with the beef.

Ebi Okonomiyaki

There is an abundance of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, but so far, I have only found two others (Hime Sushi and Gyu-Kaku) that serve Okonomiyaki, which was terrific. I'll return for this and to try the rest of the Special Rolls.

If you know of other restaurants that serve Okonomiyaki, please leave a comment below so we can add it to our to-eat list.
